We got a little better in some areas, they got a lot better some areas since last year. They could blow us out, but it's a rivalry / divisional game. I see a lot of points being scored...though their defense has one or two weaknesses that Shanny will exploit, we have too many holes

They've recently won a couple of close ones (3rd road game for them). We've lost a lot of close ones, something has to go our way sooner or later. In the end, I imagine they'll tear us a new affhole, but I won't be shocked if we sneak it out.

SANTA CLARA — Losing 33-30 at Green Bay not only extended the 49ers’ losing streak to four games, it also incited fans to tap into our weekly mailbag:

Can we acknowledge that if we are rebuilding, we need to start with the most important position, coach. Kyle Shanahan doesn’t know how to win.

Shanahan won quite well when he inserted Jimmy Garoppolo for a 5-0 December debut. But Shanahan did come with the reputation of stubbornly preferring pass plays over clock-killing runs, and that remains a concern. There’s also his September-October records (0-8 in 2017, 1-5 this year). But he got a six-year contract because he is extremely sharp, relates well to players as an instructor, and he knew enough that this wasn’t a one- or two-year rebuild.


Can we get some guys in that secondary that can get the job done!!!????

Nope. Not in today’s NFL. The pass rules are such that even a ticky-tack penalty on Richard Sherman – who’s back playing at an elite level – wiped out DeForest Buckner’s third-down sack and kept alive the Packers drive so the world could watch Aaron Rodgers’ prolific ways. That’s today’s NFL.


Why do reporters who cover the 49ers refuse to write about the awful job that Robert Saleh’s been doing his whole time as D Coordinator? Does journalistic integrity take a backseat for fear of ruffling a few organizational feathers?

I asked Coach Shanahan after the game if he got involved in Monday’s late defensive calls and he said no, that he fully endorses Saleh and the scheme. What would make the scheme better, aside from takeaways and fewer points, is if players’ poor communication didn’t lead to blow coverages. Richard Sherman had the best defense of Saleh, explaining that players simply aren’t executing play calls properly.


If the Raiders are doing a fire sale on players that dont fit Grudens system. Do you think the 49ers should look at Gareon Conley to pair with Sherman?

Perhaps, but the Raiders don’t seem like the friendly neighbor you go to when you need some milk or an egg. See: Khalil Mack, who John Lynch claimed the 49ers tried getting with a similar offer as the Chicago Bears.


Richard Sherman is holding his own at CB. Could Niners trade for Patrick Peterson as the right CB spot has been atrocious?

Patrick Peterson is not getting traded, at least not to a division rival that will be playing in Arizona in two weeks.


What is going on with Witherspoon? Did he not play because he was hurt? Why is Solomon Thomas not being given an opportunity? Will the 49ers trade Richard Sherman?

In order: (a), Witherspoon went from starter to a rotational player to bench warmer real fast, and now he’s in the concussion protocol from his 10 special-teams snaps (none on ddefense); (b), Thomas’ snap counts are the most watched through six games, because he’s not being used as much on the interior as he should; (c), No whispers on a Sherman trade but it makes sense only if he wants out because otherwise he’s their top defensive back.


Ronald Blair & Sheldon Day deserve a higher snap count.

They did got a lot more action Monday night than past games. In fact, Day played 45 of 71 defensive snaps and Blair played 42, which were greater workloads than first-round picks Arik Armstead (31) and Solomon Thomas (26).


Does any one know why the interception wasn’t reviewed and if it was why it wasn’t overturned when it was clear the ball touch the ground and was moving?

It’s up to the NFL officials to review that and perhaps they did quickly back in New York. My first impression upon review was that it was an interception and King kept his hand between the ball and the ground.

Yeah I don’t know why there are complaints about it. If they think that’s the reason their defense is giving up 29 ppg they’re going to be real upset when they play us.

Goff was 50% for 174 net yards with a pick and 5 sacks. If (and it's a BIG if) the niners can get pressure on him, we've got a good chance. Gurley blasted that sorry Denver run D for over 200 yds and the Rams won by only 3 points. Tells me their offense wasn't very efficient (like the niners vs. the Cards, when they dominated in offensive stats and still lost by double digits).

Start with the same expectation. We're getting blown out.

Its a sound expectation because they are better and they are healthier.

Then you can be pleasantly surprised if we make it a game.

Then we can all go into rage fits when they can't close out a close one , having completely forgotten we didn't even expect them to compete.

I feel better after that GB game. We are still too wildly inconsistent though, and still have too many turnovers. Our special teams fumble gave GB 3 points. We can't keep doing that. If we stop the turnovers, we are better than .500 and I think we could give LAR a real scare.

The lams are undefeated, but they have had a soft schedule. Many of those wins were close wins against average at best teams. They have not gone toe to toe with an elite team yet. LAC is their best win.

This could be another close game. I think we can keep it close... possess the ball on offense, no drops, turnovers. On defense stop blowing coverages, tackle someone for a change. NO Penalties. Same thing as the GB game.

We've played to the level of our competition every game this year so far. I don't see that changing. Expect a high scoring game and beathard playing lights put but coming up short in the end. Another heart breaker

Hopefully our guys play pissed knowing that everyone, including most fans, have written this off as a loss. Our offense is putting up points, I hope we continue to see that trend. Brick by brick, get better every week.

I don't understand. We have had the firepower to keep up with every team we've played this year. Eliminate the turnovers and we win just about every one. This is a winnable game. But if they score on their first play with a deep sideline pass into blown coverage, I might have to turn the TV off.

I liken us to the 2015 Chiefs. They also started 1-5 and then possible HOF QB Alex Smith reeled off 10 straight wins and they waltzed into the playoffs. We gotta start winning right now if we want to make the playoffs though. It would be tough if we started 1-6.
