Rams hold on through a fake punt, a fumble and a furious Seahawks comeback
Posted by Josh Alper on October 19, 2014

When you’re 1-4 and leading the defending Super Bowl champions at home by two points with a little more than two minutes left in the game, the idea of willingly handing your opponent the ball inside your 20 seems as appealing as throwing yourself into a pit of cobras.

That’s just what Rams coach Jeff Fisher risked with under three minutes to go in the fourth quarter against the Seahawks. The Rams faced a fourth down on their own 18-yard line and a punt seemed imminent, but the Rams hoodwinked the Seahawks for the second time on the day. Johnny Hekker threw to Benny Cunningham for an 18-yard game that iced a 28-26 win that also saw Stedman Bailey return a punt for a 90-yard touchdown after an elaborate fake that sent the Seahawks coverage team after Tavon Austin on the wrong side of the field.

Almost iced, anyway. The Rams got the first down that would end the game on a Tre Mason run shortly after the fake, but Mason lost the ball and a mad scramble ensued. The Rams recovered and went into the victory formation the rest of the way.

All of that came after the Rams gave back most of the 18-point lead they built in the first half. Russell Wilson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another to get the Seahawks within two points, but he could never nudge Seattle back in front. Wilson finished the day with 313 passing yards and 106 rushing yards, an outstanding rebound from last week’s struggles, but not catching fire until the second half caught up with the Seahawks.

It would have helped if the defense could have stoned the Rams once they drew close, but Austin Davis led an impressive drive to extend the Rams’ lead to 28-19. It included a 30-yard completion to Chris Givens on a third down and a four-yard touchdown throw to Lance Kendricks, which helped Davis put an exclamation point on an efficient 18-of-21 performance. The Rams also got 85 yards and a touchdown from rookie Tre Mason and three sacks from their previously dormant pass rush, two things which they can build on in hopes of taking a big lead and just holding onto it next time.

If they don’t, though, at least we’ll be entertained with watching what they come up with next.
---------------
Pete Carroll totally outcoached by Jeff Fisher and Greg Williams. Outplayed by a 4th string QB

Legion of TOAST

U Cursed Bro?
---------
“They are who we thought the were, and we let ‘em get away with it”
---------
Pete Carroll wants an explanation; it looks good on you, Pete.
---------
I can’t wait to start seeing stories on put and espn about Pete Carroll losing the lockerroom…
---------
That boom you heard is not the So called “Legion of Boom” it’s the sound of the Cheathawks bandwagon coming to a crashing end. LOL @ Cheattle. You were never a relevant franchise without your cheating PEDs and dirty tactics.
--------
Fisher pulled the same thing against the 49ers two years ago.

He’s got brass ones.
---------
lol what a fraud of a team. Thanksgiving will not be so thankful when the red & gold gets their shot at the PEDhawks. Good win lambs.
--------
Who will finish last in the NFC west? The Rams or Seahawks? LMAO This makes me so happy.
---------
If only the Seahawks had a ‘dynamic’ player on special teams, preferably one that can score three touchdowns in a game with ease before undisciplined penalties by teammates not in the play call them back.
-------
I was cheering for the Rams. But it looked like the Seahawks were robbed on that fumble near the end of the game. It looked like Richard Sherman was on top of the ball.
--------
Look what happens when your secondary can’t mug receivers on every play. Sherman is turning into a joke. Most illegitimate Super Bowl in NFL history.
--------
Nice call on that fumble recovered by Seattle to secure the victory for the Rams. Inept officiating wins again. Time to give coaches the ability to throw the challenge flag within 2 minutes.
--------
Thanks refs – don’t review that fumble at the end of the game that two Seahawks obviously recovered with a minute left. The officiating in the nfl this season is making the game unwatchable.
----------
Weren’t we told by Seachicken fans that they were going to steamroll every team on their way to a dynasty?
How is that coming along?
----------
Fumble by Rams, Seahawk player clearly visible with the ball, refs give it to Rams and don’t even bother to review it.

Russell Wilson tackled by the neck, no call.

Robert Turbin tackled by the neck, no call.

Russell Wilson well into his slide, Rams defender hits him hard, no call.

Rams QB at the line, does a major flinch that looks just like he has received the snap, Seahawks called for encroachment.
----------
And how hilarious was it watching Carol trying to say Tavon Austin called fair catch when NEITHER one of them did?! Classic play.
----------
Most exciting play of the year by far!
----------
Congrats to the Rams, great win with alot of trick plays.
-------
First faked out by your own punt, then faked out by one of theirs.

LOL @ elite, dynasty, kiss the ring and all that other chest pumping 12th Bag garbage spewed since the NFCC game was handed to your team by the stripes.
----------
Seattle is weak and softer than a cloud.

The Madden curse continues.
---------
Congratulations Rams great game, nice win.
----------
Seahawks are imploding and it’s funny because all off-season we had to hear about how the niners were imploding and the hawks were only getting better. So now they’ve dropped two straight. We’ve seen their qb get berated on the sidelines by one of his receivers, players are getting into fist fights in the locker room, and there have been reports of players getting tired of Wilson’s holier than thou demeanor.

Definitely looks like a guaranteed repeat for the hawks though. LOL.
------------
L…..O……..L

– Colin Kaepernick’s thought of Russell Wilson’s scrambling around like a chicken with it’s head off, when his first read isn’t there!
---------
The Seahawks just aren’t the same team without Percy Harvin.
----------
Cue the legions of haters spewing their mindless drivel about the hawks. The season isn’t over and we are still wearing the crown. Glad to see the hawks battle back but the penalties combined with poor play of the defense was just too much. The refs were also equally as bad. We will get this ship righted this week and will bounce back.

Other teams fans envy our teams players. Other teams players envy our teams fans.
-----------
the officials not reviewing that fumble at the end was outrageous
-----------
Over 400 yds offense for Seattle. Russell Wilson 313 yds no picks plus over 100 rushing. St Louis special teams was the difference, nothing else, so get your facts straight and then post.
----------
No repeat for you. Go to the back of the line.

Well it's true. We also won due to our first half D, Davis and the running game, but I imagine that would take too long for the national media to say about the Rams.

And Wilson committed to the slide after McCleod was off his feet to stop him

There was no clear evidence of Seattle recovering the fumble

Turbinw was clotheslined... N o grabbing of helmet or shoulder pads

There is no team that can cry foul on penalties to the St Louis Rams. Did we get a few calls today? Yes, but that doesn't bring back about 3 losses which blown or no calls were the major factor. And as I said before in another thread, I'm tired of the whining about QBs getting hit when they decide to become RBs.

Of course that's going to be the response of the national media. The Rams completely DOMINATED that 1st half. If they could've made any slight adjustments in the 2nd it wouldn't have been even close.

Give credit to #3 though. Not going to say he's the greatest quarterback in the NFC, but holy shit that kid is just a play maker. All 5 foot whatever of that kid is pure fucking football.

If Tre Mason just slides after the first down marker--which was only one yard away--it's game over. Wish he would've just done that to avoid the controversial fumble. Quite frankly, it looked like they recovered and probably did, but it was hard to really see any one player with clear possession. Not to mention our offensive lineman (I forget who initially landed on it) looked to have secured the fumble, and should have. Thankfully, it worked out in our favor which is extremely rare. This win literally kept our season alive. Hopefully this will give us some momentum going forward.

I'll say it again. With what we've seen of Davis, there was no reason to shut down the offense. This is the first time this year I've second guessed Fisher in a game. It leads me to think he feels some heat as HC.

If the Rams had continued to play as they were...I think this game isn't as it looked. KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DO...cuz when you stop...you ain't being you!

The Rams last dirve makes my point.Davis was masterful buying time...don't mess with his confidence...LET 'ER RIPPPPP!!!!

Yeah - the shitchicken fans claiming that it was clear that they had recovered that ball. Did the player sprout hands from his balls?
