The New Orleans Saints visit the Los Angeles Rams in Week 12 of the 2017 NFL season. PFF previews the top player matchups of the game.

PFFELO Ranking: 4

MATCHUP: NEW ORLEANS SAINTS OFFENSE VS. LOS ANGELES RAMS DEFENSE

RB Mark Ingram vs. LB Alec Ogletree Mark Ingram’s overall grade through Week 11 stands at 78.1, 21st out of 59 qualified running backs. He’s earned game grades of 93.0 and 84.3 the past two weeks against the Bills and Redskins respectively, and his 37.6 elusive rating ranks him tenth among 21 running backs with at least 116 attempts.

He should see plenty of linebacker Alec Ogletree, who’s 37.0 overall grade is 80th out of 87 linebackers. Ogletree has notably struggled against running backs; his 6.1 run-stop percentage is the 12th lowest mark among 58 qualified linebackers, while his 10.5 tackle efficiency is the 24th lowest figure out of 55 qualified linebackers.

Saints-Running-Backs-Week-12-1024x576.png

WR Michael Thomas vs. CB Kayvon Webster Michael Thomas continues to prove that his excellent rookie season was no fluke. His 86.3 overall grade is the eighth best among 115 qualified receivers. He’s dropped only two passes on 65 receptions for a 2.99 drop rate that’s eighth lowest among 34 qualifying wide receivers, while his 2.25 yards per route run is the seventh-highest figure among qualifying wide receivers.

When he lines up to the left on offense, he’ll be matched up with cornerback Kayvon Webster. Webster’s allowed only 44 yards after the catch to receivers, and his 0.95 yards allowed per coverage snap is tied for 28th out of 80 qualifying cornerbacks.

TE Coby Fleener vs. LB Mark Barron Coby Fleener has alternated well-graded overall performances with poor performances each week since the Saints’ Week 5 bye, so he’ll look to break the pattern after last week’s 81.1 game grade versus the Redskins. Fleener has performed particularly well out of the slot formation, where he’s caught 80 percent of his passes, the seventh-highest percentage among 23 tight ends with at least 91 slot routes. His 1.84 yards per route run from the slot is the third-highest figure among the same qualified tight ends.

He’ll be covered by Mark Barron regularly, who spends 28 perccent of his coverage snaps in a slot cornerback role. Barron’s 5.9 cover snaps per target have him tied for the second most frequently targeted inside linebacker, and his 1.15 yards allowed per snap in coverage is tied for the 10th highest figure among qualifying inside linebackers.

PFFELO Ranking: 9

Coverage by: Mike Cahill

MATCHUP: LOS ANGELES RAMS OFFENSE VS. NEW ORLEANS SAINTS DEFENSE

T Rob Havenstein vs. Edge Cameron Jordan Havenstein’s pass blocking has been up and down this season, while he has been consistently strong in the run game with the sixth highest run-block grade this season with an 86.9. Though he gave up five quarterback pressures in Week 11, Havenstein had allowed the 14th fewest quarterback pressures since Week 6 heading into that game.

He will need to bring his best this week as he will face one of PFF’s elite edge defenders in Cameron Jordan. Jordan currently is currently tied for the seventh-most quarterback pressures among all edge defenders with 45, 41 from Havenstein’s side, and the fourth-highest overall grade (91.4). The last time these two met in 2016, Havenstein gave up six quarterback pressures, the same amount Jordan produced.

LAR122-1024x576.png

RB Todd Gurley vs. Saints run defense Week 11 was the third time this season that Gurley had 15 or fewer rushing attempts and second time in three weeks. The Rams have lost twice when that has been true, with their previous loss coming against Seattle. It was also the third time this season where he was unable to force more than one missed tackle or gain more than 1.9 yards after contact.

Things don’t get easier in Week 12 when he sees a Saints defense that has the fifth-fewest missed tackles combined. They are missing tackles on only 11.5 percent of their tackle attempts, ninth best. The Rams have given Gurley 20 or more carries only four times this season, in those games he has forced nine of his 19 total missed tackles and they have averaged 34 points per game.

WR Cooper Kupp vs. CB P.J. Williams After committing his first fumble of the season, wide receiver Cooper Kupp dropped his fifth pass this season, which resulted in a punt in the fourth quarter. Kupp now has the fifth-highest drop rate among 34 eligible receivers at 11.63.

The Saints’ slot cornerback P.J. Williams could help provide a big game for Kupp, as he is averaging the second most yards per coverage snap allowed while in slot coverage at 2.29 and has an overall coverage grade of 65.3. In the weeks following a game Kupp has dropped as pass, he has not gained more than 47 yards, though he has seven of his 10 forced missed tackles following such games.

Hollywood Showdown: Top Rated Saints Offense Faces Off Against A Highly Ranked Rams Defense
Two top NFC contenders meet in Tinseltown when New Orleans looks to continue their roll against the surprising Rams.

The New Orleans Saints won their eighth consecutive game last week, with a heart-stopping overtime comeback over the Washington Redskins. Next up for the NFC South leaders is a showdown on the west coast against the 7-3 NFC West leading Los Angeles Rams.

New Orleans comes into the game with the league's top ranked offense, but let's have a look at how they stack up against the Rams' 6th ranked defense.

Saints pass offense vs. Rams pass defense

626147358.jpg.jpg

The Saints passing attack ranks 2nd in the NFL, producing nearly 272 yards per game, and Drew Brees is coming off of his highest yardage output of the season last week, throwing for 385 yards in the comeback over Washington.

First year right tackle Ryan Ramczyk struggled a bit in pass protection, perhaps his worst showing of a fine rookie season. Brees has always spread the ball around to his targets as good as any quarterback that has ever played, but the effectiveness of the Saints passing game usually starts with Michael Thomas and Alvin Kamara.

The second year Thomas has established himself as a star, and leads New Orleans with 65 receptions for 753 yards and 2 touchdowns. He is nearly unstoppable on short and mid-range routes, and has a catch radius next to impossible to defend against.

The Saints love to get the ball to their rookie of the year candidate Kamara in space, and his 49 catches for 447 yards and 3 scores are among the league leaders for running backs. Veteran Ted Ginn Jr. has been more consistent than many expected this season, and has been a solid option for Brees with 35 receptions, 570 yards and 3 touchdowns.

626139290.jpg.jpg

The New Orleans tight ends came alive last week against the Redskins at a perfect time. Coby Fleener erupted for 5 catches and 91 yards, all on the final 2 drives of regulation, and Josh Hilladded a 4th quarter touchdown to bring the Saints within a score. Wideout Brandon Coleman seems to make at least one big play per week, and is a trusted Brees target, while running back Mark Ingram remains effective in the team's screen attack.

The Los Angeles defense has been giving up around 212 yards through the air, and rank 10th in the league against the pass. Coordinator Wade Phillips is one of the best in the NFL at bringing pressure on a quarterback, and Los Angeles has sacked signal callers 28 times. Their strength starts up front, where they have four former No. 1 draft choices along their front seven. One of the most disruptive defensive lineman league is Aaron Donald, leads the team with 5 sacks and 3 forced fumbles.

Beside him in the middle is Michael Brockers, who provides a huge push in the middle against offensive linemen, while edge rusher Robert Quinn is a former All-Pro that still brings heavy pressure from the outside.

The Rams have quality depth within their front 7 as well, as evidenced by 8.5 combined sacks from Matt Longacre, Morgan Fox, and Ethan Westbrooks. Veteran outside linebacker Connor Barwin is still an effective blitzer (4 sacks), and provides solid short range coverage in the passing game.

Two more former 1st round picks, linebacker Alec Ogletree and linebacker/safety hybrid Mark Barron lead the Rams in tackles, and are forces against the run, as blitzers, and formidable challenges in pass coverage. Saints running back Alvin Kamara has been an athletic mismatch to cover against nearly every opponent New Orleans has faced this season, but will face a much stiffer test against this talented Rams duo.

Los Angeles is led on the back end by cornerback Trumaine Johnson, considered one of the better corners in the league. Johnson leads the team in pass break ups and has 2 interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.

The team's other two primary cornerbacks, Kayvon Webster(concussion), and Nickell Robey-Coleman (thigh) are both questionable to play this Sunday, and each has been a bit inconsistent opposite Johnson. Rams free safety Lamarcus Joynerhas 2 interceptions and a touchdown return, and leads a group of young players that have struggled at times in preventing the big play.

Saints run offense vs. Rams run defense

626139224.jpg.jpg

Mark Ingram is the 4th leading rusher in the league, pacing a 3rd ranked New Orleans running attack that averages 144 yards per game. Ingram has run for 806 yards, averaging 5.2 per carry and has scored 8 rushing touchdowns. He has rushed for over 100 yards in four games, and averaged a whopping 12 yards per carry on 134 yards against the Redskins last week.

Kamara has shown the ability to be an every down back on most teams, rushing for 459 yards and 4 scores while averaging 6.4 yards per carry. He has been the perfect compliment to Ingram, with both having the skill to provide a knockout punch to a defense. The New Orleans offensive line continues to blow defenders off of the line of scrimmage, and gets to the second level of the defense quickly, creating additional open space down the field for it's running backs.

The Rams have allowed just one back to rush for over 100 yards this season, Leonard Fournette in a week six victory over Jacksonville, but rank 28th at stopping the run, surrendering 123 yards per game. Los Angeles has given up over 165 yards in a game four times this season, and seems to struggle with overpursuit against strong cutback runners. Ogletree and Barron are outstanding run defenders, but the defensive linemen in front of them must keep blockers occupied for them to utilize their athleticism.

What to Look For
Pass Protection: The Saints offensive line against the Rams front seven is undoubtedly the biggest key to the game on either side of the ball. New Orleans struggled at times against the Redskins pass rush, at least more than they have in any game since the opening loss against Minnesota.

Kamara could be challenged more from Ogletree and Barron than he has from most opponents this season. There's no reason to believe that the Saints won't be able to establish their running game, and expect New Orleans to take some deep looks off play action passes.

The Saints offense had their way with the Los Angeles defense when they met a year ago, a 49-21 New Orleans win. Drew Brees threw for 310 yards and 4 touchdowns, Michael Thomashad two of those scores, along with 9 catches for 108 yards, and Mark Ingram rushed for 146 yards with a score on the ground and another receiving. Will they be able to duplicate that success?

This does not bode well for the Rams on Sunday.

Mark Ingram named NFC offensive player of the week

It’s amazing to think, now, that the Saints went out and signed Adrian Peterson this offseason.

Because they’re running it well now, with a draft pick and parts they had on hand.

Veteran back Mark Ingram was just named NFC offensive player of the week, after his share of the Saints comeback overtime win against Washington last week.

Ingram had 134 yards on just 11 carries, and added another 21 yards on three catches.

That marked the fourth 100-yard game in six for Ingram since the Saints pulled the plug on the Peterson experiment, and coupled with rookie Alvin Kamara, the Saints have won eight straight games behind their running game.

Panic Meter: What Impact Could One More Loss Have on These Contending NFL Teams’ Seasons?
By Conor Orr

Rams (7–3)
Next opponent:
Saints (11/26)
Panic level with loss: MEDIUM/HIGH

The Rams are in a difficult spot. Even after dazzling the NFL over the first half of the season, they will not receive the benefit of the doubt. Sean McVay is a brilliant offensive mind but not yet a proven commodity when the boat starts to rock. A second straight loss to a premiere opponent would make me a tad uneasy.

McVay Calls Saints Offense “A Nightmare to Prepare For”

My key's to the game:
* Take the Lead early!
* Stop the Aint's run game!
* Get Takeaways!
* Keep Brees in the pocket or on the Bench!

And run the score up as High as possible!!!!! Think "Playoff Tie Breakers!!

In my opinion the Rams have to run the ball or control possession to have a shot at winning this game. This simply have to.
15 carries for Gurley last week? Not acceptable.
The validation that Kupp has displayed bad hands this year was not pleasant but it is the truth. With Woods out someone will have to step up. Will be interesting to see if Thomas can make some plays.
As many times as I run through matchups in my mind I can't see the Rams sticking in this one. Not with back up DBs starting.
A smart, accurate, decisive veteran QB who excelled against the blitz vs backups? Now add in a dominant running game and play action? Yikes. Unless the Rams get some lucky turnovers or a special teams score I think the O will have to put up 40+ to win.
The Rams O has rolled against overmatched opponents. The question regarding the Saints D is are they that much better than last year or is it a side affect of their O making everyone one dimensional?

Great Breakdown on the Rams offense and how it was shut down

View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10cSxi8XobQ

I hope Asshole Face and Dennis Allen watch this video
-----------
Makes me think that Okafor’s replacements hold the key to the D strategy
----------
Man, your run defense better be good if you're going to dedicate a DE to bootlegs and outside runs. If our CB's were at full streng, Bell could stuff the bootlegs.
-----------
Someone said Hendrickson was good at spying QBs in college makes me wonder if u go more 3-4 looks with the safeties as blitzers in sub packages or Hendrickson/Cam as the outside blitzers with Rankins Davison and Onyemata on the line I'm base.

It also helps that McVays team and I may need to be fact checked on this but they are an 11 personnel team meaning 1TE 1RB and 3WR. So they aren't a base run heavy team which is typically when we've seen Kikaha.
----------
This should be a very good game
-----------
So preparing for this offense should be similar to preparing to play against the Falcons.
We should have AQM hitting the QB on every play.
----------
Step 1: Have one of the best front 7s in the league.
Step 2: Don’t, not have one of the best front 7s in the league.

Kupp is going to be lining up outside a lot this game I think. He and Watkins will be eating the lion's share of snaps at X & Z.

How the slot shakes out for us is going to be very interesting. I pray Everett gets a lot of looks. Him and Pharoh should be able to hold things down for us pretty well.

Biggest concern for me is our defense meh. Still going to counseling due to the fact we couldn't get Case Keenum off the field last weekend, and this week it's Drew MFing Brees and the league's best rushing attack.

Oh man, there goes any playoff success the Lions thought to have with Stafford going off the field. Any little thing like getting rolled up on a play, and the most important player on your team is out....man...

Saints at Rams Thursday Injury Report: Ken Crawley and Marshon Lattimore DNP
Looks like we might have to count on Williams and Moore. Ugh.
by cajuncommando58

Looks like the Saints may have to depend on P;J;Williams and newly reacquired CB Sterling Moore for the Saints matchup against the Rams. Both Marshon Lattimore and Ken Crawley do not practice.

That’s what has me worried.

The Saints have some guys banged up, but so do the Rams, who could be without two of their most important cornerbacks, Kayvon Webster and Nickell Robey-Coleman – Alden Gonzalez ESPN

I just can’t believe that fantasy "experts" are saying sit Drew Brees and Jared Goff, when both teams are hurting in secondary.

Saints' starting cornerbacks Marson Lattimore, Ken Crawley miss practice Thursday
By Herbie Teope

The New Orleans Saints have a conundrum at the cornerback position.

Starters Marshon Lattimore (ankle) and Ken Crawley (abdomen) missed a second consecutive day of practice Thursday, leaving their availability very much in the air before Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Rams.

While Lattimore suffered his injury in Week 11, it is unclear when Crawley suffered the abdomen injury.

Crawley was observed on the field Thursday participating in the stretching and conditioning portion of practice open to the public, but his practice designation shows he didn't do much outside of stretching.

The Saints bolstered depth at the cornerback position earlier in the week by bringing back Sterling Moore and signing Dexter McDougle.

Third-year pro P.J. Williams is also a candidate to start if Lattimore or Crawley are out for Week 12.

Left tackle Terron Armstead Linebacker A.J. Klein (ankle) and safety Kenny Vaccaro (groin) were limited for a second consecutive day.

The Rams list 13 players on Thursday's injury report after adding defensive tackle Aaron Donald, who did not practice with an illness.
-----------
Absolutely devastating
----------
I'd be extremely bothered if devante harris is on the field with PJ williams again
----------
harris should be cut immediately
----------
Yeah, this is concerning. Hopefully they'll lean on 3 safeties, with Moore and Williams manning the outside. That's not awful if we can get after Goff and take Gurley away.
----------
I bet Goff is touching himself looking at this report. Knowing he wil face PJ, Harris, And two CB off the street. 400 yards easy
----------
Except the one CB is Moore and he knows the defense and played quite well for us in stretches last year. If we run the ball and I think we should be able to against this Rams defense, we control the clock and the game.

All in all, in a close game in the 4th qtr, who would you rather have? Drew Brees, guaranteed first ballot HOF'r or Jared Goff, 2nd year pro and for all intents and purposes a rookie.
----------
Personally I hope we generate a pass rush by any means possible and not sit in zone to protect the inexperienced CBs...Goff is good enough that if he has time he'll make plays, but he's also young and if we harass him he could get uncomfortable and start making mistakes...
-----------
I'm looking at our starters this weekend on D in base sets. Up front is should be Jordan, Davison, Rankins and Onyemata. Gotta hope Klein is close to 100% and ready to join Robertson (and Teo' in some packages). PJ and Moore should get the work outside. I see Vaccaro in the box, with Williams and Bell high.

Scratches probably include Crawley, Lattimore, and maybe even Mauti back to the bench. Anybody have any best guesses?
----------
I guess we will use Rafael Bush more than Harris right?
----------
In the box Bush is ok but in coverage not good
----------
Lattimore was out in the Carolina game and basically the entire Washington game we won both games the Saints are the best team in the NFL and the best coached team in the NFL 4-1 on the road I'm not worried about a damn thing the only people who should be worrying are the Rams and how they're going to stop the best running back tandem in NFL history. Good luck with that.
---------
They are back ups for a reason. No one on this team can replace Lattimore. That being said I would feel a hell of a lot better knowing Harris was not going to be on the field. I'd rather we play ten and rush three than have him on the field lost.
---------
at least this time we will have vacarro and klein. as big a blow as it is to be missing Lattimore its better to have KV & Klein with no Lattimore than Lattimore with no KV & Klein.

kinda the lesser of two evils
---------
I like our changes... when we win in LA the pressure will be on Atlanta and the Panthers
---------
10-6. You can’t lose this many starters on defense and have offense be this streaky. It was mid 3rd quarter & we still had 13 points and couldn’t maintain drives last week. Rams are better than redskins and so are the falcons and panthers.
----------
Well the redskins beat the rams at their house so we are going to see
----------
Harris has good coverage skills, he just gets confused in zones and which player he should be covering! He's one of those guys that should live in a film room. He will get the start if Crawley can't go, Harris is better than Moore. Moore tends the play off a lot because he's slow, Moore should've been a safety because he smart and just not fast enough to play corner! Now put him on the tight end and he's go ball!
----------
What's need to happen, that d line is going to have to have its best season of the year! Rankins and Davison needs interior rush, put Onyenmata at the right end to contain the run and he's a pretty good pash rusher with power! Cam Jordan needs to have a party at the left end position, I haven't heard much from him in a couple of games! This game will show the heart of these guys!

Sean McVay: 'I don't think it's fair to put me in the same category as Coach Payton'
By Herbie Teope

sean-mcvay-cd0a1252c23d5fd3.jpg

AP Photo/Jim Mone

NFL fans of offense should buckle in Sunday when the New Orleans Saints play the Los Angeles Rams at L.A. Memorial Coliseum.

The Saints enter Week 12 ranked third is scoring (30.2 points per game), first in total offense (415.7 yards per game), third in rushing (144 yards per game) and second in passing (271.7 yard per game).

The Rams are second in scoring (30.3), fourth in total offense (375.4), ninth in rushing (120.4) and ninth in passing (255).

Also in the spotlight are the two men commanding the sidelines in Saints coach Asshole Face and Rams coach Sean McVay, both of whom are regarded as offensive gurus.

The coaches were young when they became NFL head coaches, as the 53-year-old Payton was 42 and McVay a youthful 30.

They also started off with a franchise quarterback - Payton with Drew Brees, and McVay with second-year pro Jared Goff, the first overall pick of the 2016 NFL Draft.

As for other resemblances?

"The first similarity would be S-e-a-n," Payton said in a Wednesday morning teleconference. "Now, outside of that, he went to Miami of Ohio. I coached there.

"There are a lot of good friends on his staff I know -- (offensive line coach) Aaron Kromer, (defensive line coach) Bill Johnson -- guys that've worked here. I think there's confidence you build. You go set up shop, you get your opportunity but I've never had a chance to work with him outside of that so I wouldn't know. But he's doing a good job there."

Saints guard Josh LeRibeus, who was with McVay in Washington from 2012 to 2015, sees some comparisons.

"They're both great coaches," LeRibeus said. "Sean (McVay), he always had a ton of energy, so I'm sure he brought that over to Los Angeles and obviously they're doing well."

McVay, who turned 31 shortly after his hiring, has turned around a team that finished the 2016 season at 4-12 to a current 7-3 record and first place in the NFC West.

The respect between McVay and Payton is mutual, but the Rams head coach downplayed any comparisons in a separate Wednesday afternoon teleconference.

"I think he's accomplished so much I don't think it's fair to put me in the same category as Coach Payton," McVay said. "I think hopefully if you achieve even close to what he has in this league then maybe you start to get mentioned.

"I think in terms of looking at the trajectory and being around some of the same people, it's certainly flattering words, but I definitely have not done enough to be mentioned in the same sentence as Coach Payton."

Nevertheless, there are areas of Payton's coaching ability that McVay admires from afar.

The Rams head coach complimented Payton's ability to call plays, provide leadership, maintain relationships and communicate.

"When you look at the production year-in and year-out, I think there's a very clear-cut philosophy, just what I know about him from people who have coached with him," McVay said. "They just can't say enough about his leadership and feel for the game, ability to communicate."

McVay points to Kromer, who coached with Payton in New Orleans and at Miami of Ohio, and Washington wide receiver coach Ike Hilliard, whom Payton coached with the New York Giants, as examples of Payton's influence.

"I think when you just look at other people who are doing their job at a high level, you have a lot of respect for that," McVay said. "Certainly as an offensive mind and as a play-caller, there's a lot of things that you can almost look up to and really admire about the way he's handled himself and the success he has achieved being an offensive background guy."
-----------
I was thinking the same thing coach McVay
----------
I don't think it's fair neither. Go to Browns and check back in 12 years.
---------
Yeah Payton has a Superbowl Ring and McVeigh doesn't. Until that happens, you cant't really make that comparison.
--------
No wonder the Rams suddenly have a struggling D-Line lol... Bill Johnson folks
-------
True. It's an unfair comparison at this point. It'll take a few years to determain if McVay is anywhere close to the underachieving coach Payton is.
---------
you do realize the Payton is in the top 40 coaches of all time in wins, correct? He is one of only 4 coaches to coach for a decade and never win less than 7 games. I guess if that makes him underachieving, so be it.
----------
sure Payton is doing a great job this year. He doesn't deserve a pass for taking 3 years off though.
---------
Belichick is the only coach who hasn't had bad years, but only with NE. He was average at best when he coached Cleveland. As I stated before, Payton is one of only 5 coaches to coach for a decade and never win less than 7 games. Even Landry, Parcells, and Belichick had seasons with less than 7 wins.

I think Payton has proven he can build a good team from scratch, as evidence by his 2006 campaign. The problem over the last three years is that the Saints were "rebuilding" but never admitted it publicly. Going 7-9 while rebuilding is not all bad. Remember, only eight guys are still on this team from their 2014 roster. I would call that a rebuild
----------
Only Lombardi, Allen, Madden, Tomlin and Payton have never won less than 7 games in a season. The first three are in the HOF and Tomlin will be one day

Following up on the Saints injury. Majority. Of Saints fans say Harris should be cut, sounds like an attack point when he's on the field.

McVay is taking the humble road

Gotta admit that he is playing this question as cool as it gets...

Sean McVay: I'm not in the same category as Payton - NFL.com

He a good coach for sure.
-----------
Straight out of the Belichik book.
----------
Didnt realize that both Aaron kromer and Bill johnson were with the Rams. I'm sure they'll have a bone to pick with Payton and a lot of knowledge of our system to use to pick it after getting fired.
-----------
Certainly explains why their run defense is 28th in the league...

hihi.gif

----------
Was Kromer fired? I thought he left to become OC for the Bears
----------
Correct. Still, I think he's both retained and implemented a lot of what he's learned from Payton. Bill Johnson, not so much.
---------
Yeah.................I'm sure that they sat in on the Saints gameplan meetings all week!!

What is it that makes people think that a coach that hasn't been with the team in years (Kromer) and a coach that was fired after last season (Johnson) can give ANY info on the Saints that they don't know already??
----------
What are Johnson and Kromer really going to know about the oline and dline? They are night and day from when those guys left.
----------
Yeah I'm pretty sure Kromer has not coached a single OLineman we have. Bill Johnson has coached Cam but that's it? Maybe Payton has a bone to pick with them.. seeing how Kromer looked lifeless and over his head on the sidelines while attempting to be a head coach the team for the first part of 2012... or maybe Payton has a bone to pick with how Bill Johnson not being able to develop a player to save his life.
----------
Would either of those guys recognize this current Saints offense though?

Insight to the Rams offense

Another good breakdown by this guy who has been sucking off the Saints offense this year.

Shows what the Vikings did or mostly what the Rams didnt do to beat the Vikings. The Rams are going to want to use the playaction to open space on the flats. Going to need good line end play and LBs to eat space.

LINK
---------
Going to need to shut down Gurley and get Ingram rolling.

Do those two, we win IMHO.
---------
We stop gurley,
We win

That simple
----------
The Vikings defense is one thing, the Saints are another. I don't think we'll be as successful as the Vikings. They are going to make plays against us. We're going to need to have success in the running game and Brees is going have to play precise and turnover free.
----------
I agree. They're going to score 20-28 on us.

We don't turn it over on offense, keep it efficient, and we will be fine. The Vikings moved the ball against them
----------
Teo and Klein have consistently been great at sealing their gaps, the others not so much. I really hope we have Klein for this game at 100%. We need his leadership presence
----------
Klein and Vaccaro make our run defense somewhat respectable. Without them in the mix you will have guys like Perine with 130+ yard games.

Seems like a smart pick if you ask me. Nice pick, Stephen

Rams 30, Saints 27: The Rams are the more desperate team, trying to rebound from an ugly loss in Minnesota. Winners of eight straight including last week’s dramatic come-from-behind victory against the Redskins, the Saints are playing with house money. The Rams haven’t lost two in a row this season and will find enough ways to score against the Saints’ injury-riddled defense.

Record: 8-2 overall, 4-6 vs. spread

Larry Holder, Saints columnist

Saints 27, Rams 23: Last week’s game against Washington nearly became the prototypical trap game for the Saints in the midst of a lengthy winning streak. New Orleans overcame it all. Sean McVay is being touted as a boy genius with his offensive schemes. Asshole Face, well he’s still pretty great at setting up an offense as well. The fun doesn’t have to stop for the Saints. So why not nine in a row …

Record: 8-2 overall, 4-6 vs. the spread

Herbie Teope, Saints writer

Rams 31, Saints 27: The Rams are currently a 2.5 favorite at home in a heavyweight showdown that could go either way. The Saints should have their way on the ground against the league’s worst run defense, but the Rams may go after a banged up Saints pass defense potentially without rookie cornerback Marshon Lattimore (ankle).

The Rams are without wide receiver Robert Woods, but still have wide receiver Sammy Watkins and running back Todd Gurley. Look for plenty of fireworks between two offensive-minded head coaches with talent on both rosters.

Record: 8-2 overall, 6-4 vs. the spread

Josh Katzenstein, Saints writer

Saints 27, Rams 24: The Rams are the best team the Saints have played since Week 2, but that hardly guarantees the Saints’ eight-game winning streak is about to end. Although the numbers suggest the Saints will be able to run against the Rams, I think New Orleans will try to win the game through the air. It should be a tight game, but Drew Brees will carry the Saints to a ninth victory in a row.

Record: 9-1 overall, 6-4 vs. spread

Amos Morale III, Sports writer

Rams 34, Saints 33: The Saints could easily stretch the streak to nine games especially with Kenny Vaccaro potentially returning to the lineup. But neither of the Saints' starting cornerbacks has practiced before Friday making it hard for them to be available Sunday. That's a matchup the potent Rams offense might be able to exploit.

Record: 9-1 overall, 6-4 vs. spread

I do miss Waufle...and I’m curious about Johnson at the moment. I understand we’re missing some pieces and all, but we still have some serious talent in the front 7. Need to see some production.

Yes he was their DL coach from 2009 to 2016 and he's from Louisiana.
Yes. I guess what I mean is:
Paul Boudreaux was the offensive line coach of the Rams for several years, as we know. Under his leadership our Oline was always crap. But coach Bou had this legendary reputation and was given the benefit of the doubt. He would take players that would seem to make up a good line and they would always underachieve. It took a few years for some of us before we stopped giving him the benefit of the doubt.

For me the final straw came last year as I watched a replay of Goff getting sacked on a stunt move.

In the replay Barnes and one of our guards, (Wichman or Brown?) stood there looking like they were swatting a swarm of bees, while the defenders ran past them unmolested. That was bad coaching. Not bad players.

I was done with coach Bou.

I hope Bill Johnson is not a coach Bou. Aside from Brockers, and Donald I see an under-achieving line.

Saints are due a loss to Rams

Saints are too high right now. Too many wins in a row, and a lot of them against bad teams. As the great Bane once said, "Victory has defeated you."

Rams just lost, to a good team, and the pain of that loss has them hungering for a win.

But its ok, we will take this loss as a lesson, and get back to our p's and q's. Kick the Falcons ***, and ***** slap the panthers into wildcard hopeful where they belong.

And yes I know this is a simpleton's perspective.
----------
They are underdogs in this game. IF they lose......the excuses of "over-confident" or "over-looked a weak opponent" shouldn't apply.
----------
Glad you are wanting us to lose.
----------
Well, I gotta say, I like "We need to lose because we are winning too much" posts much more than I liked the "We are never going to win because we suck" posts from the prior three seasons.
----------
I don't want to us to lose. But I know that a loss isn't always a bad thing. I'd rather lose now than in the playoffs.
---------
Ya know people, the Rams are banged up too. I think they have just as many players out as the Saints. They are down to 3 CBs. Why are you conceding defeat?
---------
I like how you think the Falcons and the Panthers are a cake walk, but we will certainly lose to the Rams. Okay...
rolleyes.gif

---------
A loss is always a bad thing. Pulling a win out your arse when you've played like crap all day teaches the same lessons without taking a step back in the standings.

Here's to thinking positive and testing negative!!!

---------
No way am I conceding this game. You know what happens when everyone predicts a high scoring game...it's not. I'm more concerned about their running game with Gurley.
---------
I may just be having flashbacks to 2011, when we had just kicked the Colts ***, next played the Rams and they man handled us.

Sorry that season still haunts me. We were so good....
---------
Really? I guess you forgot about 2011 when they beat us as one of their only 2 wins. They often seem to give us problems regardless of their record, if anything they are due for a loss to us!
---------
It isn't even close to being the same thing. The Redskins kicked the Saints all over the field, until the last 5 mins.
---------
Fishing with dynamite
---------
"Winning isn't everything, but losing isn't anything"- Charlie Brown
-------
If we lose it won't be because were over confident it'll be because Lattimore and Crawley are out.

...and Harris makes too many mistakes to cover up. Harris mistakes aren't the 5 yard variety, they're a 40 yard TD variety.
----------
The fact that so many think we are going to lose actually gives me confidence we'll win.
---------
And who exactly have the Rams beaten that makes them so unbeatable?

While they have been playing pretty good football they have run through a pretty soft schedule to be where they are right now!!
---------
You speak truth. The Rams look good on paper, but they have really run it up on some BS teams this year.
----------
We lose now we might not be in the playoffs. The NFC is to tight.
---------
Having Klein and KV back will help in stopping Gurley and the run, but the losses of Latt, CrawDaddy, and Okafor are huge. The Rams will score points.

The Saints will need to score points (TDs not FGs) to have a shot this weekend. The Rams D is solid, and if we have to be one-dimensional, their pass rush is dangerous. The run game and O-line will be key.
---------
Some thoughts just need to be kept to yourself. The OP is a good example of one of those.
---------
We are WINNING this game, and honestly I don't think it will be close. Not just saying this with black and gold glasses. If we run the ball like we have been, NO ONE will beat us. We win this game by 10 if not more!
---------
The Saints lost 2 in a row, so can the Rams.
----------
Funny, I kind of see this as we go in and dominate the Rams. Saints are not high on themselves right now, even though they pulled out a great win against the Redskins they know that game was very sloppy, and Peyton even cancelled their day off Monday. I think we see a hungry Saints team that wants to show the whole league that we are for real and a force to be reckoned with.
----------
The Saints are no doubt going to miss Lattimore and Crawley. But, the Rams lost their #1 receiver. Hopefully Moore will see more playing time than Harris, and Saints will use a lot of zone this game given availability of safeties and lack of availability of corners. I think the Rams will get their points, but they are vulnerable to the run.

What we need to do is be patient with the run even if we get down by 1 or 2 TD's. The run has been our strength this year, and it is their defensive weakness. Being patient with the run rests the defense because it eats clock, and it tires their defense. And it keeps their scoring offense off the field. I think we will also see more of Snead this game.

Bottom line is it will be a high scoring game, but because of our run advantage, and the experience of Drew, especially in 2 minute offense after we wear them down with the run game, we will win. Add the psychological factor of the memory of how we beat them down last year when SP ran up the score against Gregg Williams, and of their loss last week, I think we can shake their confidence. If there were a game to miss our starting corners, this is the one to do it.
----------
Expect a great game from both teams with the saints pulling it out with an eight point win!
---------
I am worried about the Gurley-man who they utilize EVERYWHERE and Sammy Watkins stepping up in the absence of Woods. Now, I think the Rams may be a surprised at us; but they aren't gonna go quietly. We're gonna have to push them off the side of the cliff.
----------
With the injuries this matchup screams Rams. Gonna need a great D line performance for our defense to have a respectable showing and our d line play is average to above average. Which the d line is good enough when you getting top tier play on the back end like we have been getting.

I’m not expecting much this game. Rams caught us at the right time too banged up. It happens. We should be able to run the ball on them but I expect we have trouble stopping the rams from getting chunk plays in the run and passing game. The offense is capable of having a great day but against this team it’s unlikely.

Gonna have to score 30 for chance to win and with there talanted front with a great def coordinator it’s gonna be tough to do. I do think if we have our key components we win 8 out of ten times but we don’t. Rams 34-17. We get healthy and reboot for next week.
----------
By looking at the match up this is a tough game. Some advantages to the Rams some to the Saints. I think this game is too close to call. I just hope SP does not get "too cute" and simply stick to what has worked this season.

I expect a close loss to the Rams due to our losses on defense and playing a tough defense and outstanding offense. But I both hope and believe the Saints have the mental strength and execution capabilities to pull off a win. The team will not be complaisant in this game. Trust me. They will bring the wood
