http://boards.giants.com/showthread.php?55500-Do-you-expect-to-win-the-last-two-games

Do you expect to win the last two games?

If we do not and there is any chance Marriota falls to us do you take him?

Eli is getting up there and slowing a bit (never was Speedy Gonzales).

The St Louis game should be a contest but I don't see us beating the Eagles if that there is any Eagles Playoff hope,

They will be fighting like crazed Dogs.

As we have seen over and over again you need a franchise QB to get to the SB and win it.

I see Eli having about 3 yrs left in him if he continues his mediocre play and perhaps worse.

This is the closest we have been to top pick for ages. I'm not sure beating two bum teams was a good idea.

Its fun to watch but it has a drag on the draft
-----------
No.
---------
They'll win both. Not switching QB's either way.
---------
Right now we have the 7th pick, the worst we can get (realistically) is the 13th Pick, but we would have to win both games and teams would have to lose in front of us.

.The best pick we can get is the 5th, and only if we lose out and the Jets and the Redskins win out.

Personally, I don't think tanking to my most hated division rival to hypothetically gain 3 draft spots is worth it.
---------
I don't think there is any way they win both. The Giants looked pretty pedestrian against Washington and if RGIII does't get unlucky at the end of the 1st half...it would have been a whole different game. So no, this is still a pretty poor to fair football team. And no, no chance they move up to take Mariotta.
--------
I don't the see the Giants beating the Rams and Eagles. They'll either split the games or lose both.

And I can't see Mariota falling to the Giants. One of the teams ahead of the Giants will grab him, or somebody will trade up and leap frog the Giants to get him. But if the Giants ink Eli to a new deal, which is highly likely, and ride with Nassib as the back-up next year I don't have an issue with that. But the search for the next franchise QB will have to begin sooner rather than later.
---------
How about trade Eli to the top picker and throw in our #1 for Mariotta?

Honeslty I don't think Tom and Eli will ever sniff another SB so this move makes long term sense

Then you have Mariotta and Nassib to fight it out and all you have lost is a #1 pick (and unloaded Eli's huge salary)
---------
I stopped 'Expecting' to win a game a long time ago. Now I simply "Hope" that we win.
It results in far less angst if you lose.
Just ask all those Pats fans who expected to win SB42.
And, I do hope we win the last two. I don't care about position in the draft until the season is history.
---------
I think we lose both. We are capable of beating both but the Rams are home and haven't allowed a TD in their last 3 games I believe. Philly still would need the win in their last game for a shot at the playoffs. Right now were picking 7th if we win it would go up to 9th or 12th depending if we win 1 or 2 games. With other scenarios we could pick higher.
----------
I have no expectations of anything. You just don't know which Giant team is going to show up against better teams.
----------

Bring back Spags as the new DC: Yes or No

Looks like we had 100% on the fire Perry Fewell thread. So now that he is gone let's find his replacement. Spags is the easy choice but is he the right choice? I vote YES!!
---------
is how many games our D was being mauled in a first half and Spags making adjustments at half time to completely shut em down. Or was I dreaming?
---------
he may not be Belichick but he's an upgrade at DC.
--------
It helps when you have an excellent MIKE and a very good OLB along with an outstanding front four.

We won both Super Bowls the same way. The Front 4 was humming each time. Spags had better linebackers and Fewell had better DB's.
---------
Ideally, I would love Rex Ryan as our DC when he gets fired, however, that's not happening.

I would love to see his defense implemented. I actually might start to have faith in our defense again.
----------
I still remember him smacking the shit out of Brady in the super bowl.

At one point we were sending everyone from different spots. This would go on throughout the game..

DL pressure
Ross from the slot
LB A gap
and Gibril the Thrill Wilson creeping in and blitzing.

It was a fun defense to watch. He basically put Webster on the map. Webster was an average CB, who Tim Lewis would berate. Once Lewis left, and the scheme changed Webster was a damn good CB for us.

Giants at Rams 2014: First look at Sunday's match-up
By Ed Valentine@Valentine_Ed on Dec 17 2014

Alex Goodlett/Getty Images

A quick look at some of the keys to the game.

The New York Giants look for a third straight victory Sunday when they face the St. Louis Rams. Let's take a look at how the teams match up.

When The Giants Have The Ball

Rams Defense:
Overall -- 339.9 yards per game (11th); Rushing -- 107.5 yards per game (12th); Passing -- 232.4 yards per game (10th); Points Per Game -- 21.2

Giants Offense: Overall -- 346.9 yards per game (14th); Rushing -- 99.9 yards per game (21st); Passing -- 246.9 yards per game (13th)' Points Per Game -- 22.6

The speeding bullet known as Odell Beckham has been unstoppable in recent weeks, smashing all sorts of franchise and NFL records for rookie wide receivers. How far have the Giants really come on offense, however? Facing a quality young St. Louis defense will help answer that question.

The Rams have allowed only 12 points in the last three weeks. They shut out the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins, 52-0 and 24-0, respectively, then lost to the Arizona Cardinals, 12-6.

"We have our work cut out for us and we're going to have to do an exceptional job with our pass protection," said head coach Tom Coughlin, pointing out that the Rams "blitz more than any team in the NFL."

Defensive end Robert Quinn (10.5 sacks) and rookie defensive tackleAaron Donald (8 sacks) lead a talented young group. Defensive endChris Long is back after missing much of the season with an injury. Linebackers Alec Ogletree (93) and James Laurinaitis (91) lead St. Louis in tackles.

For the Giants, the story is simple. Get the ball to Beckham and see what he can do next. To do that, they have to be able to handle the St. Louis blitz packages, an area that has been a struggle for the Giants offensive line this season.

When The Rams Have The Ball

Rams Offense:
Overall -- 314.5 yards per game (26th); Rushing -- 106.2 (20th); Passing -- 208.3 (26th); Points Per Game -- 20.8

Giants Defense: Overall -- 371.4 yards per game (25th); Rushing -- 131.5 (29th); Passing -- 236.2 (13th); Points -- 24.2

The Giants have 22 sacks in the past three weeks, led by a resurgent Jason Pierre-Paul, who has six sacks during that span. The Rams have surrendered 41 sacks on the season. Can the Giants continue to apply the heat, this week on veteran St. Louis quarterback Shaun Hill?

"I think we have some people that are playing very well. JPP [Jason Pierre-Paul] is playing very well. Technically, early on, when he was doing some things that we could correct and help with and he has really adapted his game again to the way and manner in which we would like him to rush," Coughlin said. "We are getting contributions from a lot of people right now, Devon Kennard, and we are getting some help from Damontré [Moore]. We got help from [Johnathan] Hankins yesterday. We have some people that are contributing to that pressure and it definitely has helped in the coverage as well."

Pierre-Paul needs a half-sack for the second double-digit sack season of his career.

The Giants will hope the younger plays like Kennard, Damontre Moore,Kerry Wynn and Jay Bromley continue to show that they can be part of the defensive rotation going forward.

Rookie running back Tre Mason (155 carries, 661 yards, 4.3 yards per carry) leads the Rams rushing attack. Tight end Jared Cook (44 receptions) is their top receiver.

Special Teams

For the Giants this week, it's watch the fake on punt returns. St. Louis punter Johnny Hekker is 2-for-2 this season completing passes on fake punts. The Rams are dangerous in the return game. Tavon Austinaverages 10.3 yards on punt returns and Benny Cunningham gets 28.6 yards per attempt on kickoff returns.
---------
Is that not what the Eaglet did to Eli - blitz plue speed rushers.
I hope Eli just survives the last two games especially since the Eagles no how to attack TC’s offense. (Note what I did there).
----------
Think Gregg Williams
will put out a hush hush bounty on Eli and Odell? Seriously, this match up worries the hell out of me. I hate it on every level. Williams blitzes more than anyone and this is not a strength of this currently assembled Oline. Eli almost always tends to do something mind-numbingly ridiculous when pressured. Just get out healthy. Please.
---------
What? You dont trust our O-line?

I just hate this kind of talk..really do. And I am tired of hearing it week in and week out from opposing fans. (Of course taking out 2 AZ QB's doesnt help, although Palmer was a non-contact injury). Ever since Long and JL55 got here, the D has been a hard hitting unit and has been getting progressively better year after year.

While this sets up as a blowout win, I'm nervous about injuries & such...Maybe Mark Barron starts...Barnes or Jones gets a few snaps...whats the guy with the tats on his face, maybe he gets a lil more time. And I sure would like to see MO ALEXANDER see some real PT....some dime...something...2015 is closer than it appears...

So, this is a game they should win, and you seem to want to turn it into a "tryout"? Not sure I understand that logic. These coaches have seen this group of players everyday for 6 months. But somehow, giving someone like Alexander "some real PT" make sense because the fans need to see what they got?

Not trying to be a smarta$$ here, just don't understand how this coaching staff could sell the idea of turning these last two games, into a pseudo-preseason audition. They finally have all 53 guys healthy, so who do they deactivate on Sunday so guys like Westbrooks, Jones are active?

If Alexander was ready to play safety, don't you think they would have given him reps by now? For that matter, since Barron has been here, Joyner can't even make the game day active roster, and he's been healthy for the past 3 weeks. If they aren't gonna play Joyner, why would they play Alexander?

There isn't a coach or player on this roster who have any thoughts of doing anything other than trying to win BOTH of these games. They will sort out 2015 come January.

Giants prepare for challenge of Rams D-Line
Michael Eisen, Senior Writer/Editor

“Here’s the thing about offensive linemen,” Beatty said. “I know where Eli (Manning) is going to be on every play. All I have to do is stay between the defender and him and my job is golden.”

His job will be somewhat more difficult this week because the defender he will try to keep away from Manning is St. Louis Rams defensive end Robert Quinn, a former first-round draft choice, 2013 Pro Bowler and a player regarded throughout the NFL as one of the best at his position.

But Quinn is not a solo act. The Rams have one of the NFL’s most formidable defensive lines. In addition to Quinn, it includes left end Chris Long, the No. 2 overall selection of the 2008 NFL Draft; tackle Aaron Donald, a first-round choice this year who is getting some Rookie of the Year support; and Michael Brockers, a good all-around player. Backups William Hayes, Kendall Langford, Alex Carrington and Eugene Sims are also productive.

“They’ve got an awesome D-line and all four guys can stop the run and rush the passer,” said right guard John Jerry. “So we’ve definitely got our work cut out for us this week.”

“They play hard,” said right tackle Justin Pugh. “Obviously, 94 (Quinn) and 91 (Long) have been around a while. They’ve made plays since they’ve come into the league. You’ve got to definitely respect those guys and we’ve got to go out there and match their intensity and match their toughness.”

Manning doesn’t seem overly concerned that Quinn and Co. will be chasing him on Sunday, when the teams collide in the Edward Jones Dome.

“Everybody is going to have guys that are good players,” he said. “I’ll let the offensive line worry about those guys and getting them blocked up. I am going to worry about my reads and what the defensive backs are doing and try to get completions, but understand it is not a game where (I will) be able to hold it for too long back there.”

This is not the first time this season Beatty has faced one of the NFL’s finest defensive ends. On Sept. 21, his assignment was to block Houston’s J.J. Watt, who has played so well he’s the rare defensive player included in conversations about potential NFL MVPs. Watt had seven tackles (five solo), including a sack, and a pass defensed, but he was not the disruptive force he has been in so many other games.

“That was my first real test of a guy that’s coming off a great year,” Beatty said. “He alone can destroy a team’s rhythm and momentum and you’ve seen it done. He plays with a lot of energy, plays hard, is agile and can move a lot.”

Quinn has10.5 sacks this season – all in the last nine games – and 40.0 in the least three years. Beatty said Quinn has many of the same attributes as Watt.

“If you don’t go in a game knowing that you’re going up against this guy, he will make you look bad,” Beatty said. “They’re a little different. I can’t tell you too much. They’re two different players. It’s that desire. You’re watching them go until the end. You’re watching them chase down a play. You think he’s out of it and then he comes back into the screen. It’s the guys that do it play after play. It’s the guys that keep coming after you, no matter what the circumstances are, that are these great players, because they’re not giving up. When you slip, they capitalize on it. I’m going to test him, because that’s my mentality.”

Long suffered a foot and ankle injury in the season opener and missed 10 games. He returned to face Oakland on Nov. 30, and in the three games since he’s been back, the Rams have not allowed a touchdown.

“He’s a great player,” said right tackle Justin Pugh, who will be lined up opposite Long. “He was a second overall pick when he came out, so he’s definitely a guy that can make plays. I’ve got to go out there and play tough and give Eli time and open up holes for the running backs.”

Long was equally complimentary when asked about Pugh.

tempAP430447112153--nfl_mezz_1280_1024.jpg

“He has done a nice job over there,” Long said. “He is a guy that will stay after you. He’s a tenacious dude. For a young guy, he has picked it up pretty well. He’s got a good group around him. It helps having a guy like Eli Manning and Will Beatty on the other side. … He is learning and he’s got the tools necessary to be a good right tackle in the league.”

Donald is a rugged run-stopper who is also second on the team with 8.0 sacks.

“In today’s NFL, you’ve got a lot of rookies coming in and dominating,” Jerry said. “A lot of other positions get all the hype about rookies coming in and doing stuff, but it’s amazing to see a young guy come in, in the interior of a defensive line with what he’s able to do. He’s very quick, very strong, long arms. I’m definitely going to have to pay attention to that guy and definitely have to know where he’s lined up.”

It’s a cliché to say the offensive line must play well for the Giants to have a chance to win. But it is very true this week.

“If you lose the line of scrimmage, you basically lose the game,” Jerry said. “It’s definitely one of those games where we don’t want to sit back there and throw the ball all game, because we know rushing the passer is what they do the best. So we’ve got to try to take that away from them.”

“Obviously, they present their obstacles,” Pugh said. “But I think this week is going to be a huge test for us. If the offensive line plays well, we should be all right.”
---------
I would sit eli for these final 2 games and play nassib. There is nothing to gain in these games. Give nassib some experience. I can see eli getting hit around against the rams front 4 and this crappy o-line getting abused.

I remember 3 yrs ago the giants losing rich seiburt to a broken leg that ended his career in a meaningless game. it was the final game of the season and the giants went 10-6 but were going to miss the playoffs anyway. This team hits hard and i wouldn't want to lose eli or someone else important for next year.

Giants prepare for challenge of Rams D-Line

This game could get ugly...real ugly.

I'm hopeful the OL at the least, won't forfeit our chances at competing because they're getting manhandled like the Philly game for example...
---------
The last time Beatty faced a good pass rusher(49ers game), he folded.

I just hope he plays better this time around.

Rams defense hopes to stretch TD-less streak to four games

St. Louis (6-8) is bidding to become the first team to go four straight games without allowing a touchdown since Pittsburgh went five in a row in 2000. The Rams have never gone four straight games without yielding one.

The Rams' pass rush has produced 35 sacks in the last nine games after amassing one in the first five. Manning, set to make his 166th consecutive regular-season start, was sacked 19 times during New York's seven-game slide from Oct. 12-Nov. 30, though he has been dropped once in consecutive wins since.
--------------
In the 3 game stretch they have actually faced 6 different quarterbacks: Derek Carr/Matt Schaub , Colt McCoy/Bob, Drew Stanton/Ryan Lindley. Not exactly murderers' row, but it should be interesting.
-----------
We shall lull them to
sleep with run, run, pass for a few series and then BOOM! Switch it up to run pass run, get the first down, and then throw for a passing TD, thus breaking their streak.
---------
Won't be surprising if they do.
Jerry and Walton are going to be feasted on this game and the results aren't going to likely be pretty.
---------
These have been some really bad offensive teams
the Ram's have faced the past three weeks. They are a challenge no doubt, but this will be the best offense they have faced in a month, which is saying something as the Giant's aren't an offensive juggernaut.
--------
Don't think McAdoo will outsmart the Rams
The Giants have some good offensive players, but McAdoo's play calling will not take advantage of that fact. Coupling his play calling with a good Rams defense, the G-Men will not score more than 10 to 13 points. We only had 100 yards of offense in 3 quarters against the mighty Redskins!
---------
Let's hope that McAdoo and Coughlin are willing
to be creative rather than play a macho game. And I hope Eli has spent some practice time throwing the ball away safely…
---------
Funny that people heap high praxis on the rams defense
And rightfully so but no one ever brings up that they kind of got fat on some bad offenses.

Only the giants get fat on bad teams.
---------
Excellent point. The Rams allow an average of 21.2 points per game, and that includes only allowing 12 in the last 3 (Raiders, skins, cards). Take those three out and the average jumps to 25.9, which is more than our D.
----------
Run the ball, move Eli around by moving the pocket, and quick passing concepts. Try not to put yourself in long yardage situations. If we do, then we can always hand the ball off or call a draw.
----------
McAdoo has not adequately prepared his offensive line to function in high-crowd noise environment. This game will give him another chance.
---------
Nobody wants to hear it, but the Giants would be better off losing, in my opinion.

I'm all in for playing spoiler on Philly if the opportunity presents itself, but this one is truly meaningless (just as the last two were)

And what does the Giants' average jump to if you eliminate their best 3 games to make it a fair comparison?

For all the relevance that statement has to anything, you might as well compare the Rams' sacks in one game to the Giants' sacks all season.

Also, making up names for the random unnamed Giants fans is fun.

Don't forget C. McCoy and D. Carr didn't finish games against us either. I don't want to see Manning "injured" but if he sees some/most of the game from the sideline, well, that's football.

I think Gilbert and Sullivan captured Eli's probable reaction to such a stat neatly:

We observe too great a stress
On the risks that on us press
And of reference a lack
To our chance of coming back.

I agree totally.
Lets get them some time, see how they do.
My main concern these last two weeks is avoiding the serious injury (with a 6-10 month recovery time) at a key position....Im talking to you Saffold....and everyone else.....yes, I am knocking on wood as I type this.

I NEVER think a game sets up as a Rams blowout...I don't think they've been nearly consistent enough to this point for me to feel that way...The past several weeks have given me more confidence though...As most of us do (I would think), I worry far more about the O than the D...A couple of D scores would make me a real happy camper...
