Well that's free agency for ya...

One year's treasure is next year's trash. That's why I like what the Rams are doing... Avoiding superstars with huge price tags and looking for solid contributors for cheap. Our FA's are all capable of making big time contributions, but it's also not a disaster if they don't pan out.

Perfect example of NOT overpaying in the first couple of days of free agency. He got dumped because of his contract. They asked him to redo the deal, he said no, they said buh-bye.

Agree ,it sort of sounds to me like Sam may have taken it personal and may have been some acrimony during the negotiations,again though not saying things were handled wrong ,just saying as you do ,a little bit of puffing Sam and saying the contract not the player was the liability would have made everything less impolitic .

This is the cycle of free agency. The big name types that fans clamor over usually get cut 2-3 years later. The reason being is they are getting paid way more than they are worth. In order to sign guys you have to drastically over pay.

That's the double edge sword of FA. Nice when you are an up and coming star. Sad when you get some mileage and have a big contract.

The CBA has blown up in the players faces. I can't help but think the Owners knew all along what the affect of the rookie cap would be. Teams are letting expensive vets walk in favor of drafting cheap young talent. The rookie cap was supposed to allow more money for Veteran free agents, thus allowing them to play longer..............that is not working out so good.

Some players are still getting the money ... but no longer is it working in the aging or oft injured player's advantage. That and the fact that college players have been coming in and lighting it up more

There is no question;
1) the rookie cap has resulted in much lower rookie contracts
2) the salary cap has continued to go up

Just by that math; more is going toward the vets.

Nope. More is going to the stars. The older guys are having their contracts cut part way through.

The idea was to help out the older players. But teams are releasing them, like Jennings.

Um, which league are you talking about? I can show you a whole pile of veteran free agents that are not signed with anyone and when they do' they wont be getting big money liked the Players union hoped.

I see that you wont be convinced but I have heard enough on ESPN radio about the players union not being happy about how it is working out for the older players. They figured with less money going to drafted players there would be more to spread around for the rest of the league. Teams are not spending for veteran backups and role players. They are instead relying on Draftees, and UDFA and the like because they are so cheap. About the only veteran players that are really benefiting are the QBs.

Let's be clear, past round 2 drafted rookies were cheap and UDFAs have always been cheap. You are right that older vets are not seeing this extra money, but a lot of players (regardless of if they are stars or not) are getting big fat checks once their 2nd contract comes about.

I think it is a better system too. And the players the union was trying to help we're the older vets like third contract guys. I really don't think that anything they do can help out the guys that are past there prime or very close to it. Teams are not going to pay them more, when they are all fighting over the second contract guys who can help them more for the next 5 years. When they sign third contract stars, the player rarely makes it to the end of the contract before being cut. On back loaded deals, you can see the cut coming from a mile away, or like in Jake Longs case a deal that is written so it is easy for the team to get out of.
