ESPN’s Bill Barnwell gave out his winners and losers from the trade earlier today between the Los Angeles Rams and Buffalo Bills that swapped teams for WR Sammy Watkins and CB E.J. Gaines with some draft capital thrown in. Perhaps surprisingly, not all is good for the Rams per Barnwell.

https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2017/...falo-bills-trade-sammy-watkins-winners-losers
First, the positive:

Winner

Jared Goff

As the Rams try to build some sort of offensive infrastructure for the 2016 first overall pick, it's hard to imagine their acquiring a better receiver to work with than Watkins, who averaged 80.5 receiving yards per game while healthy in 2015, good for what would be nearly 1,300 receiving yards over a 16-game campaign. While Watkins hasn't lived up to the draft-day trade that saw the Bills deal two first-round picks to move up and acquire him ahead of Mike Evans and Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014, injuries have been the problem, not talent.

Goff stands to benefit as he has a respectable receiving corps of Watkins, Robert Woods, and Cooper Kupp with Tavon Austin off the bench. What a difference a year and regime change makes.

Now, the negative:

Loser

The Rams

So much of what the Rams do on a year-to-year basis seems to be about erasing or accounting for the mistakes they've made in the past. Here again they're addressing their disastrous investment and reinvestment in the badly miscast Tavon Austin by shelling out another draft pick and what is (in the best case) going to be a huge contract to retain Watkins for the years to come.

You could understand why the Rams would want to take a shot at Watkins, but the 2018 free-agent wide receiver class is staggering, including players like Matthews, DeAndre Hopkins and Allen Robinson. Some of those guys will re-sign with their current teams, of course, but maybe the Rams end up giving someone like Jeffery or Terrelle Pryor a big deal. That wouldn't be the end of the world.

What's frustrating about this move is that the Rams had to give up a second-round pick to acquire Watkins. Given that they're unlikely to be very good -- ESPN's FPI projects them to finish with the league's fifth-worst record -- chances are they'll be sending a high second-rounder to the Bills to acquire a player who hasn't been healthy for most of his career.

After trading away a bevy of picks to acquire Goff, the Rams can't be in the pick-trading business. If anything, they should be looking at trading down and acquiring selections. (I realize they're getting a sixth-rounder, but per Chase Stuart's chart, even the top pick of the sixth round is worth just 12 percent as much as the fifth pick of the second round, the selection the Rams project to send to Buffalo.)

Even if Los Angeles' bet on Watkins works out in 2017, the Rams are going to be stuck using their franchise tag or making a long-term bet on a player with a history of foot injuries. They could recoup a compensatory draft pick if they let Watkins leave, but that assumes Watkins will have a big-enough year to justify a serious deal in free agency while the Rams themselves mostly sit out, which seems like a very unlikely proposition.

They're also going to be in serious trouble at cornerback, where they just traded away Gaines and won't be able to afford franchising Trumaine Johnson for a third time after the season. Wade Phillips is a defensive genius, but the best guy on Los Angeles' depth chart for 2018 appears to be Broncos import Kayvon Webster, who played 58 defensive snaps last season and has spent the last several years buried underneath a stacked depth chart in Denver.

Basically, the Rams are giving up a ton of draft capital for a player that is a free agent. In addition, they are giving up valuable depth at cornerback, even though to be honest, Gaines played his best football in his rookie year.

With the Rams finally providing a deep threat and number one threat (albeit an injury-prone one), offensive improvement on paper has at least occurred. Now it’s on Goff and new Head Coach Sean McVay to maximize the influx of talent.

That's the BSPN article, not TST. Either way, it's a complete joke that they rated the Rams this low. Why are RODites the only ones who understand how good this team really is?

We shall see. I recall media members deadpanning the Faulk acquisition. Bring on the negativity and keep dumping on us media, because it's just going to make it all the more enjoyable when everyone suddenly realizes this Rams team isn't just on the upswing, but that they're young too and loaded.

Man these clowns are a joke. The rams are making these moves so they don't finish with a bad record. They've all been complaining the rams don't have a #1 wr, now they get one, a sure fire stud, they complain they gave up a 2nd rounder for him. Fucking idiots.

This is what I learned over my years...If it's referred to as the Sammy Watkins trade by every source, then the team that got named player, usually wins.

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell article has holes in it.

Let me address this one above paragraph on EJ Gaines. First what with this statement "going to be in serious trouble @ CB" . Now is this now in TC? or Pre season or early regular season? But this article jumps to 2018 & the Trumaine Johnson situation? OK EJ is a UFA next season too so what the point here? So who say's that the Rams will want to give EJ who will make a near 2 mil this season as our 4th or 5th BCB a pay raise or offer him a contract? EJ @ best is running behind Johnson, Webster & NRC as our BCB's. EJ has not been healthy since the latter half of his rookie season in 2014. I find the comment that the Rams gave up "valuable depth @ CB" o_O. From what I have been reading BCB Troy Hill has been trending upward in TC anyway.
http://www.ramsondemand.com/threads...aines-and-some-other-stuff.50295/#post-919311

Why would this article then move on to trash up newcomer Webster:thinking:? We here @ ROD have been having discussions here for long time on the need to find/discover some young new Boundary CB talent. Rams have several new BCB's & Nickel's/Dime talent in here like Aarion Penton, Kevin Peterson, Micheal Jordan, John Johnson, Blake Countess & Dominique Hatfield none of which will be entering into UFA'cy that would require new cap funds & a new contract.

I like the ideal of moving EJ now so Wade can get a look @ his new collection of CB's now. I have no issues with utilizing EJ Gaines as part of this trade. EJ Gaines was a 6th rd. pick & now they get the Bills 2018 6th rd pick maybe Snead will use this 6th to draft a CB?

Here is my take. I thought about another well known player that everybody seems to like and most teams would have him on their team in about 1 second if given the chance to trade for him. Gronk! But, check out his injury history. So, this is why it' was a no brainer for the Rams and why they crushed it in the trade. Sammy Watkins is well worth the risk. Also, I wonder if the crap weather in Buffalo has anything to do with injuries. New England also has crap weather and Gronk seems to get injured by crossing the street. There will be some of you who hate Gronk and wouldn't have him on your team if they paid you a billion bucks and that's fine too. But the point is, Sammy hasn't had 9 operations, and he's only 24. With this new McVay offense and moderate to beautiful So Cal weather, Sammy will thrive and there's a lot to be excited about as a Rams fan.

This is the two-sided story of Gronkowski’s seven-year tenure with the Patriots -- off-the-charts play that at times has some asking if he might be the best to ever play the position balanced against a string of injuries that has caused fans to hold their breath every time he runs a seam route and takes a big hit.

The 27-year-old Gronkowski has had nine reported surgeries since his final year at the University of Arizona in 2009 -- on his back (three times), forearm (four), knee (one) and ankle (one) -- which sparks an obvious question: How much more can he take?

Here’s the Gronkowski rundown with the Patriots:

2010

Gronkowski played all 16 regular-season games and the team’s lone playoff game in his rookie season after the Patriots selected him in the second round (42nd overall). He made 11 starts.

2011

Becoming a full-time starter for the first time, he played in all 16 regular-season games and all three playoff games. In the AFC Championship Game against Baltimore, he suffered a high ankle sprain, which clearly affected him in Super Bowl XLVI even though he played through it.

2012

Playing on the field goal protection unit against the Colts in the 10th game of the season, Gronkowski broke his left forearm and missed the next five games (the Patriots went 4-1). He returned in a limited role for the season finale before breaking the forearm again in the divisional round of the playoffs. The Patriots lost in the AFC title game the following week.

2013

Following surgery on the forearm, Gronkowski suffered an infection, which required two additional surgeries on the forearm and led to him missing the first six games of the regular season (the team went 5-1). He also had surgery that offseason on a herniated disk in his back. Gronkowski played seven games upon his return before tearing his right ACL on a low hit by Browns safety T.J. Ward. He missed the final three regular-season games (2-1) and both playoff contests (1-1) as the Patriots bowed out in the AFC title game at Denver.

2014

After two challenging seasons, Gronkowski was available for every game, although the Patriots made him a healthy scratch in the season finale to rest him. The team won Super Bowl XLIX.

2015

Gronkowski took a big hit in a late-November game at Denver, which resulted in a sprained knee and an unusual situation in which the team and Gronkowski’s family released a joint statement. The Patriots generally don’t release statements on injuries, as the statement reflected some of the unique dynamics in play with Gronkowski and might have traced back to displeasure in Gronkowski’s camp with how things unfolded with his forearm in 2012-13. Gronkowski missed one game (a loss).

2016

Gronkowski reportedly injured a pectoral muscle in the offseason, but he was available on the first day of training camp. He injured a hamstring in a joint practice with the Bears on Aug. 15, sidelining him for the first two games of the season (2-0) and limiting him in his first two games upon his return. After a sensational four-game stretch, Gronkowski then suffered a pulmonary contusion after absorbing a big hit from Seahawks safety Earl Thomas on Nov. 13 and missed the next week’s game (a win) before returning against the Jets on Nov. 27. Now he’s not expected to return for the rest of the season because of a lower-back injury.

Some perspective:
If Watkins stays healthy enough to get 1,000 yds the rams will offer him more than TA's contract. If Watkins rejects the Rams offer, he'll sign somewhere else and get the Rams a 3rd round compensatory pick. So in essence, the Rams trade a #4 corner after a down year and a second for a 2018 6th and a 2019 3rd (really a 4th). Not a terrible trade, but...
If Watkins puts up that yardage, their will be WRs in FA next year that would want to sign with the Rams.

I really don't see a downside to the trade unless Goff has another down year and the Rams are looking for a new franchise QB at season end.

Frack these "reporters" and their ridiculous "grades".

Had the Patsiettes or Cowturds make this same deal we would be hearing all about how "brilliant" those insufferable strokes were and blah....blah....blah. Then, the "article" would end by bashing our FO for not having the guts or brains to make a move like this.

If you wanna win you gotta take some chances. Sometimes they work...sometimes not.

Or, you can stick with "your" proven underachievers, muddle through yet another year, and at best win 7 games.

I think it is clear which side I am on.
