Eric Waters, a former TE at Missouri, said he thinks former Missouri DE Michael Sam, the 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year, has changed.

Waters and Sam were roommates at Missouri. In February, Sam publicly announced he was gay and was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the St. Louis Rams. Waters was undrafted and is currently at training camp with the Pittsburgh Steelers. If Sam plays in a game for the Rams he'll be the first openly gay player to play in the NFL.

“He is a nice guy, but I will say the truth: A little bit of him has changed,” Waters told the Pittsburgh Tribune. “It is really not my situation to speculate at this point, but he is not the same Michael Sam anymore.”

How does Waters think Sam has changed?

“Just the way he acts and carries himself,”Waters said. “I was watching the NFL Network the other day and I think it was Marshall Faulk who said that he keeps referring to himself in the third person as Michael Sam this, Michael Sam that. That's not the same guy we knew back when we were living together. He is not the same fun-loving, joking guy that really didn't care about stuff like publicity.”

Waters added that he and Sam don't communicate currently. After Sam made his announcement, Waters made this series of tweets before saying he meant no disrespect to anyone, nor was he angry at all with Missouri, which he said had treated him well.

Sam told his teammates before the season that he was gay and according to many at the school, the entire team embraced him. His sexuality wasn't a story throughout Missouri's 12-2 season. After the season, Missouri was given the SEC Sportsmanship Award.

Waters had eight catches in 2013 and 14 throughout his career.

After Sam was drafted, plans to film a reality show were announced. However, they were scuttled shortly after they were made public.

But let me do it anyway. Pretty pointless article. So this one guy thinks Sam is different than he used to be? Ok.

So far we've heard nothing but praise about him from camp.

It's not really my place to speculation on Waters, but he seems to be bitter about something.

I dont see why Waters would care. Sam isn't there for emotional support anymore? So Sam is busier and trying to stay focused. Was Waters hoping for game tickets? Were they really great friends in college or just teammates?

I would be embarrassed to admit I had a problem with it at this point, if I was Waters.

Haha.....
I think my old neighbor has changed too. Of course I have seen or spoken to him since I moved six months ago.

I should know better than to give this topic any more life than it already has but...

if I understood correctly, Waters doesn't have contact with Michael Sam anymore and he knows Sam has changed how? through commentators on the television? Move along! Nothing to see here!

Almost everyone acts different on TV because they are being watched by the whole world. He can't be a "joking guy" too much while being interviewed all the time because the media will attack him for not being serious or remaining focused. You are exactly right, nothing truly worth writing an article about.

I think when you leave college and get to "cash in" by drawing an NFL salary it's natural to think about publicity and how to maximize your income for what may be a very brief stay in the limelight. That's good sense rather than some kind of character defect.

This bitterness makes little sense to me. I in no way see how Sam is a flamboyant figure. From my gathering, Sam has always been a confident man and sticks his foot in the ground for what he beleives in. He not been a distraction of any form. The media asking about him is of no fault of his own, he can't control that. It's not his fault him playing in the NFL is part of a cultural movement in today's world.

I think the only thing that's change is how Sam's former teammate views Michael Sam. Sam's been the same person from day 1 of his announcement that he was gay. Crap like this only makes me root for Sam more. He's a football player and no late round pick has ever been under a microscope like Sam. It is BS...

Just let him be!!! He's done nothing wrong.
