Time to produce: RB Isaiah Pead

By Nick Wagoner

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- As the St. Louis Rams prepare to enter their third training camp under coach Jeff Fisher and staff, much will hinge on the ability of the team's many young players to turn potential into production. In this final week before camp officially begins, we take a look at some players who must take the next step either to preserve their jobs, help the team reach its first winning record since 2003 or, to the team's preference, both.

We continue this week-long series with running back Isaiah Pead.

What he's done: After the Rams used the third of three 2012 second-round picks on him, much was expected of Pead. In his first year, he was supposed to handle the primary backup duties to Steven Jackson and then entered 2013 with a shot at the starting job after Jackson moved on to Atlanta. Pead was unable to secure either of those jobs and by the end of last season had settled into a role that was almost exclusive to special teams. In two years, Pead has 17 carries for 75 yards and 14 catches for 94 yards. He's also done some kick return work but has mostly worked on coverage units. Fumbling issues combined with a four-game suspension to open the 2013 season haven't helped his cause.

Why he must do more: Much like receiver Brian Quick, the Rams have high hopes for this second-round skill position player. But myriad things have kept Pead from ascending to a more prominent role. In just two seasons, Pead has been surpassed by running backs with lesser draft status including Daryl Richardson and Zac Stacy. Even undrafted rookie Benny Cunningham handled a bigger role in 2013 and the Rams drafted Tre Mason in the third round this year. Pead's long term future in St. Louis will likely hinge on his ability to finally produce in 2014.

Where he fits: In the spring, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer indicated that he'd like to see competition develop at running back, but it remains to be seen whether that competition is legitimate or based on coach speak. Pead even took some repetitions with the first-team offense during organized team activities. It's a big leap from there to more work in the offense, however, and it's probably not realistic to expect Pead to make enough of a leap to steal carries from Stacy, Cunningham and Mason. A more plausible scenario would see Pead continue to contribute on special teams and develop into a potential third-down back who can become something of a specialist catching balls out of the backfield and helping with blitz pickup.

I want him to succeed and hope he becomes the stud the Rams thought he'd be! That said, it better be this year or I'll write/trade him off for the future. Too much coin for a special teams player!

I like Wagoner's stuff usually, but when he makes certain assumptions, and can't get the FACTS right in stories like this, it makes me wonder just how "connected" he really is in his new gig writing for ESPN.

This piece looks suspiciously like a lot of the other fluff pieces being circulated out there this time of year. .....just for the record, Pead's suspension at the start of last season was for ONE GAME, not four.

wow...my thoughts exactly...I think someone confused Pead with Givens (and Givens wasn't suspended at the beginning of last season, only Dunbar)......and Nick usually wont do that...Ghost writer perhaps?

OK, thoughts on Pead, I expect all the hype to meet production. Sounds like he's matured, and has figured out he needs to get with this program. He has the talent. He's had 3 years in Schotty's system....Can't wait till camp. Easily the best suited to meet the "change of pace" back Fisher looks for.

I want to see more of Pead. If we trade him, we need to showcase him in our offense from time to time, if we want to get a draft pick for Pead.

Pead has been buried very deep in Fisher's doghouse, but it's time for Pead to see the light of day and produce. Most of all, If Pead blossoms, I want Pead to blossom for the Rams and not another team.

I'm hoping for the best from Pead, of course.

But I'm certainly not holding my breath. There have been reasons that Pead has occupied Fisher's doghouse so much.

I believe it's a "between the ears" thing with him, but how do you fix that? And how long do you wait?

Now there are 3 quality backs ahead of him and all have lower draft positions where taken. He's sure looking like a 2nd round bust to me. Sigh...

I compare Pead & Quick to 49er AJ Jenkins & L. James. I think both Ram players are still ascending. It is there 3rd year,so traditionally it is the year of proof.I think Snead & Fish did good with there picks.
---Yeah Nick is a Nerd(goofy)type.I don't think he has an athletic bone in his body.He has to get the suspension part of it right, not just write.

Nick & Ram fans who like to judge Pead & Quick as bust from Sneed tend to look at the glass half full.
Cunningham & Richardson(who he does not mention) where great finds late.To think the Rams were ok going into 2013 with Richardson & Pead as there RB's. Trading up for Stacy was huge for the future of the position. The Rams have brought in competition & have done a great job evaluating talent.
Pead was drafted highly because he had a great Senior Bowl week & won the MVP.
Look last year with a steal in TJ McDonald & this year in Aaron Donald. The Rams also liked Zach Martin this year, because of his Senior Bowl week.
