You will not have more success than the Rams did at building and developing a defense. With the starters that left, the ones we re-signed, the ones already under contract, and projecting out Aaron Donald, Tree and Brockers - Fisher has developed some serious defensive talent.
Johnson, Jenkins, McCleod, Donald, Tree, TJ Mc, and Brockers were all drafted by Snisher.
Quinn was on board, and the trade for Barron was a steal. Hayes was brought on, and that was also a great deal.
Nearly all of those players will be or are paid top 10 salaries at their positions. It's really an embarrassment of riches looking back on last year. We truly had 15 defensive players that were starting material
And all of that has brought us nothing. No success whatsoever. Injuries this, injuries that. Insert excuse here. The truth is, teams with franchise QBs overcome losses such as these. The QB position can mask so much, at least in the regular season. And that's where this rebuild has gone wrong so far...you don't want to put a QB on a terrible team, I get that. Now is the time. Doesn't matter what we have 10 perceived holes - if we fix those this year, we will still lose some free agents next year...or the year after. We're just treading water at 7-9. Hopefully we will sign several low key free agents for depth, but at this moment, we could spend our entire draft on defense....CB, DE, DT, LB, FS - starters, depth or future starters are now needed at all these positions.
Assuming the OL and RB positions are set (which is a heavy assumption - Mason might be gone, so depth may be needed there too), the most pressing needs are the passing game. QB, WR, and maybe TE. We seem to have holes everywhere now. This is my plea to Fisher to fill what you can in Free Agency and then do whatever it takes to get a QB and WR. Next year will be painful...still no QB solution on the horizon, and now more needs than we've had in two years. We have a foundation, and getting a QB/WR will put us in position to be perennial playoff contenders starting in 2017.
