Full List: The World's 50 Most Valuable Sports Teams 2017
Kurt Badenhausen , FORBES STAFF

The cutoff to qualify among the world's most valuable sports franchises is higher than ever, up 18% this year to $1.75 billion. There are 36 franchises worth at least $1 billion that did not make the top 50. Credit soaring TV contracts for the rising franchise values, as well as labor deals with players that almost ensure profitability barring outrageous spending on payroll by an owner.

No sports league is as profitable as the NFL where the average team earned an operating profit (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of $91 million and no one banked less than $26 million. The boffo profits helped 29 NFL teams rank among the 50 most valuable franchises (only the Bengals, Lions and Bills missed the cut). Other sports include eight MLB clubs and seven each from the NBA and European soccer.

The Dallas Cowboys lead for the second straight year at $4.2 billion. Jerry Jones' team unseated Real Madrid last year as the most valuable sports team. The Spanish soccer powerhouse had ranked No. 1 for three straight years.

Below is the full list of the most valuable teams across all sports (51 this year thanks to a tie at $1.75 billion between the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). Values are based on Forbes valuations done over the past year for NFL, NHL, NBA, MLB, F1, soccer and Nascar (no NHL, F1 or Nascar teams made the top 50).

The move to LA tripled the Rams value. No surprise teams from big markets like New York and LA are worth a lot more. The Cowboys success in the 90's attracted a lot of fans. They also did a great job of marketing.

For 2 billion I'd move my family to Aleppo. Ok, maybe just a few cousins and an uncle but the point is that moving a billion dollar business from one city to another to triple it's value is a no brainer. I grew up going to LA rams games with my grandfather but I have to say, Anaheim sucked and my passion for the team hit a new high with warner and company in stlouie so hopefully rams fans in St Louis will remain fans. Oh, who we kidding, you know you will. This is the Era of all access so you can see every footage if everything rams where ever you are.

3 soccer teams in the top 5, wow. Rams and dallas, playoff no shows for most of the last 13 years is odd at first but marketing and market play a huge role

The real value is owning the stadium because the revenues generated from the stadium exceed anything else. There is a fuckton of money in parking, hot dogs and beer. For a team to be really crazy valuable the owner of the team has to own the stadium.

More than they are now, but they are renting I think so they won't shoot up in value dramatically.

I think the Cowboys doubled in value just from Jerruhworld.

All that value and they can't win an effing playoff game.

It's the venue.

Not shocking and that what billionaires do they make more money so let's hope it occurs to the front office that winning also increases the value of a franchise as well.

Even though the Giants don't own their stadium, nor do the 49ers

I believe the Giants and Jets are partners in the stadium with IIRC Metlife and someone else. They have a piece of the action.

Doesn't matter who owns the 49ers stadium, nobody goes to it so nobody is making monay LOL.

Point being, the big value and big dollars for profits is in the venue. It's open everyday for an event other than 10 days a year on Sundays.
