At the time and even more so now I think they made up the call on Bates to save face for the whistle blowing the play dead. The flag was already down for the whiner penalty so they added the Bates infraction to create offsetting penalties and cover up their mistake on whistling Tavon out of bounds.

That's my theory and I am sticking to it.
nice call. that's exactly what I was saying last night. they didn't even throw the Bates flag originally until they realize they fucked up calling Tavon out. so they covered it up with offsetting penalties plain and simple.

excellent work by @junkman again...thanks for the time you put into it !!

I was screaming for a flag on the Borland tackle, but the announcers were too busy trying to get in Borlands jock strap to hear me, and the refs are just plain blind deaf and dumb

To the television crew's credit, however, when they came back from commercial they highlighted the body slam and Lynch explained it was a penalty and a point of emphasis of the NFL to stop such unnecessary roughness, and should have been called. Not that the refs were listening.

That's a really charitable explanation.

Fact is, you can block from the side as long as your hands are on the side of the player, not the back. His only crime was shoving the player too hard which got the ref's attention, causing him the throw the flag... 5 seconds later.

I usually don't buy into "the ref's were against us" mindset but it was hard to ignore yesterday. The no-call on the body slam, the quick whistle on the punt return and wasn't there another quick whistle on a fumble? Maybe there was even more. But in the end, I think that's why the Rams won the game. Whether intentionally or due to ineptness, I think the last play of the game was a makeup call for all that had led up to that point.

When the announcers and ex head of officials are outright disagreeing with the calls on the field, it's usually a pretty bad call.

But, the last call of the game is a good example of what I always complain about when discussing how officials influence a game. It generally isn't a litany of calls against a team, just well-timed, well-placed calls. In this case, for Dog only knows what reason, it went the Rams' way at the right time. And I'll take it.

It means a lot to me that the Rams were able to persevere through all of the poor officiating and win a game on the road. A win is a win at the end of the day but I don't ever truly feel good about games that were obviously not earned. In this case, they not only earned it but also overcame poor officiating. Kudos, Los Ramos.

Borland is allowed to suplex slam Tre Mason with impunity.
That one really pissed me off. You can't miss that or think it wasn't a personal foul. The refs were easily in position to make the call and CHOSE not to. That should be completely unacceptable to Goodell and his "it's all about player safety" mantra. If Goodell has any sincerity to his BS, we will see Borland issued a fine. I will hold my breath.

I gotta say flv - I think you're reaching here in an attempt to give the refs the benefit of the doubt. The idea that the Whiner player was in any way "blindsided" by Bates doesn't hold up. They were engaged and then Bates follows through with a shove from the side. The blindside rule says it all in the name. The Whiner defender clearly was not blind to Bates' block - just not in a position where he could face the block - nor was he running laterally across the field while getting decleated or anything similar.

So what do we do about this? The league always claims the officials are part-time and make too little money to be fined. Should we have them publicly flogged before the offended team? :sneaky::ROFLMAO:

Approx. $200 grand for five months worth of work = too little money? Personally, I don't buy the too little money OR the part time argument. You are either good at your job or you aren't. The NFL either hires officials for their quality or they don't. You actually can't tell these officials they can't take other forms of employment or compensation as long as there is not a clear conflict of interest. So they will no doubt always have other jobs much like most school teachers do in the Summer.

Does anyone really believe there is not a HUGE list of college officials who would LOVE to go to the NFL? Does anyone who watches a lot of college football think the officiating is worse than in the NFL?

You don't cure anything by making officials full time or paying them more. There is frankly no excuse for missing these calls and I can't think of any rationale behind the idea that they wouldn't somehow miss these calls if they were full time. Are they missing the majority of them because they don't know the rules? Do they not have the time and/or money to learn and study all the rules? Not hardly. And if they don't have the time, then their other employment is interfering with their performance and the NFL should hire those that do have the time and motivation.

Time and money are red herrings in all this. I don't really care if the NFL decides to pay the officials more - even though paying more for poor performance has never been a good motivational tool. But it is in the NFL's hands and in particular Goodell's. And Goodell is too busy putting pink on the players and coaches and ACTING like player safety is personally important to him to give a damn about something that is clearly ruining the game.

What is the solution? The NFL does fine against the MUCH stronger player union so it is clear that they hold the power over the officials. Start holding them accountable either through reviews and fines or reviews and lost games. It's not really rocket science but the NFL is clearly not motivated enough to get off their asses to go to battle with another union with which they just recently botched negotiations through their own hubris.

How much are NCAA officials payed? They seem able to do their job on the most part (ACC officials in Florida vs Florida State game excluded).

Hard to tell if his head is even with him or behind him....it looks even to me.
As for Austin, the Rams have to figure a way to get him involved. I would love to see them use him on similiar routes like Britt scored on. Bring him in motion and let him run all the way across the action. Run some interference and who ever is on him will not be able to stay with him. Biggest problem with this type of route is it takes time.

Can't. They've run it. Austin has gotten wide open. Davis can't see him. He can't see short passes over the middle due to the pass rush unless it's someone tall like Cook or Britt.

Austin has the worst luck with penalties. I believe that should have been his 3rd PR TD of his career. Only one has stood.

3 TD's called back in KC, all very questionable.

Two called back in SF, (Laurinatits fumble scoop and score)...

Chiefs get away with holding on KO TD.

That's 35 points erased in two weeks and 7 gifted. You kidding me???

I am reluctant to say we were robbed of a TD. It looked as if the bates foul call was legit to me. Other than our ROD chatter did the refs ever even debate whether TA stepped out. I thought they blew the whistle for the off setting penalties. Either way we won. I would give up the first overall pick to beat the miners @ Levi. I don't like to lose to them ever.

Interesting theory. Makes me wonder - what is this ref looking at which caused him to throw this flag. Realize that:
  • This is well after the whistle had blown
  • It's probably 30 yards away from Bates, not to mention the terrible angle on the play
  • Tavon hadn't even reached the 50 yard line when Bates' victim landed on his butt. By my count, this was a full 5 seconds after the Bates penalty that this ref threw this flag... well after it was clear that a big return was happening.

View attachment 3934

Look at the ref at the top of the photo, the one at the 13 yard line. He is indicating that the runner was inbounds. He is pointing to the field of play with his left arm and finger pointing to the field of play. Tavon was inbounds according to him. They (the refs) should have let the play go and discuss it after it's conclusion.

But there is still the penalty on Bates. Don't get me started on that one.

Dude, they don't fine players for illegal block in the back. Illegal block in the back is not a personal foul.

Yep I noticed that as well.

I actually thought that the Ref's realized they screwed up when the blew the whistle too soon and just through flags making stuff up as they went.
