The first step in the postseason talent evaluation process begins as soon as the teams are eliminated from playoff contention. After the postseason bowl games, combine and spring workouts are complete, all NFL clubs are allowed to host 30 draft prospects. While teams may not use the full allotment of 30 visits, this process helps them confirm any issues they may have with players’ mental capacity and provides updates on the injury/rehab front. It also offers a venue in which to showcase knowledge of X’s and O’s and the draft prospects’ ability to socialize with other players in another environment.

Teams are now focusing on private workouts and draft meetings with coaches and scouts, while front-office executives and head coaches make the final adjustments to their draft boards. With less than 30 days until the biggest offseason event, the NFL draft, the sense of urgency is high as all 32 teams work to figure out or anticipate which situational decisions they will be faced with while on the clock. It is all centered on team needs, hinging on who teams lost in free agency, who they signed and a compete roster analysis for each team. Within these meetings, scenarios are discussed over and over – which player will be available and, if that player is gone, what is our next move?

Most teams will sit and pick the best available player, staying true to their board. Others, however, will draft for need. Studying a team’s trade history is paramount, and it is impossible to figure out who will bail out (try to trade back) and who will bundle a few picks, i.e., jump up and draft their desired prospect.

Knowing a team’s philosophy is extremely important. Every draft is like a snowflake; there is not one the same, and they all have surprises. Prepare for countless twists and turns, highs and lows. Expecting the unexpected is generally the motto to which to adhere at this time of year.

The mock draft below is based teams’ cap causalities, needs, free agents signed (not including current players re-signed) and lost, and a prediction on what the teams will draft after a roster analysis.

I'd be OK with this draft. I'd rather have an outside guy in this scenario, especially since we signed Cook to a big deal. Elam is talented, but there is better value later on.

I see this as a very realistic draft. Every pick, except maybe SF's, makes sense to me. Softli's 2 for 2 today in my book. Good radio segment and a good mock.

Hahaha. I wouldn't hate the great Tony for this draft. I'd just do it slightly different.

I have a strong feeling Rams are going to draft Eddie Lacy at 22. Idk why, but I feel it.

Talk about a new offense if what you say happens, austin and lacy plus all our 2nd year guys would be fun to watch I have to admit. Lots of potential!

Softli put some effort into this mock and, with each team's FA transactions documented for us, it's actual very good reference material. That's high praise in my book.

I'm a bit surprised that he put Austin at 16 since I thought he was anti-Austin that high. But I recognize the dilemma after 15 there are few elite special guys. There are a bunch of solid players and a bunch of high potential athletes making the 2nd and 3rd rounds where the value and strength of the draft are. A WR or FS drafted in the 2nd or 3rd could be a much better player than someone drafted in the 1st. There's not a lot separating the WR and FS classes at the top in my opinion.

If one of the elite DTs or Olinemen fall into our lap at 16, I'm all for pulling the trigger on him.

They only have 3 WRs on the roster from last year so it's fairly obvious that they will add 1 or 2 WRs prior to preseason depending on your viewpoint of Cook's classification. Snead has also said that he has a big flanker WR, in fact 2, but people ignore that and tout flankers continuously.

My point was Sofli has been very vocal against Austin and very high on Hunter and I believe he's mentioned Patterson, so you can say he's had a change of heart in the 'type' of weapons.

I thought someone else might have observed that. Someone who listens to him often could fill in the blanks if he's said such. Maybe a little birdie whispered something in his ear?

Or maybe he's drafting who he thinks the Rams and other teams might draft, and not who he would draft. That is always the dilemma for me when I do a mock.

I'd take that draft.

But...

Softli has a lot of WR going in the first round. Do you guys see that many going top 32? I don't.

With everything fully transitioning to a passing league i could see it happening
