I was a little confused about the Punt formation towards the end of the 3rd quarter when the Rams were up 14. I believe Austin went in motion and lined up in the slot and the Rams went to what looked like a formation that would be used for a fake punt. I think they had a receiver lined up to the opposite side of Austin as well.

However, Jax blew right through the line and got a piece of the punt.

It was almost like the Rams faked a fake punt. I thought this was a bit risky at the time. Forunately, Jax was not able to convert and the Rams got the ball back. But if they would have were looking at a 7 pt game and letting a team that is winless get a little confidence.

I was curious why they would do this? I think the announcer mentioned something about them showing a formation for future teams on film that perhaps the Rams would go back too and actually run a fake. If this is the case I thought it was risky at the time a team needs a win.

Why not just line up and punt?

Good question. I thought it quite stupid at the time. I don't know what they were thinking trying to get a little too fancy at that stage of the game.

It was done in an attempt to draw them offsides for a first down.

A good move IMO.

There's a time and place for getting cute. That wasn't either. If not for us playing the equivalent of a JV team... that stupid shit was a game changer.

Protect the 14 point lead. Punt the fucking ball out of there. Field position (place) / Later part of the game (time).

Until we can learn to block on special teams... we should stick to extreme basics.

Wouldn't that go towards the argument that it might have been the time and place? :ww:

No.

We got away with it because it was against the jags.

We almost didn't... but thanks to complete bafoonery, our senseless plan didn't destroy us.

There was no good reason to try that at that particular time and place. None.

Blocking is a nightmare on ST... as was on display during the blocked punt there. You can't risk that when you're only up 2 scores at that point. Foolish risk that should have bitten us square in the ass.

+1000. Our special teams are WAY too confused already to try some extra bull-shit like that. It would be very interesting to know what % of ST plays we've had this year with NO penalties.

I'm thinking 20 or 25 maybe....

Go back to the basics, stay clean for a few games, then think about getting all exotic and shit....
