Mike Leach Reportedly Working on Contract to Be New Tennessee Head Coach

The Tennessee Volunteers are reportedly "working on a deal" with Washington State's Mike Leach to fill their head coaching vacancy, according to NBC 5's Newy Scruggs.

Yahoo Sports' Pete Thamel added that Leach's name is "picking up steam," while former Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin is "losing steam" after he emerged as a candidate for the gig.

Citing a source, Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman reported Tennessee's meeting with Leach "went very well."

Leach is in his sixth year coaching the Washington State Cougars following a 10-year stay at Texas Tech that ended after the school suspended him following an investigation into his treatment of a player who had a concussion.

So you reap what you sow, they were disgusted at the thought of Greg Schiano, however, now they are about to hire Mike Leach, who most will admit is a royal pain in the ass and very smug for not really accomplishing that much. Now in fairness, Leach has won at Texas Tech & Washington State, historically not major winning programs and he does run an offense that will sell tickets, but in the end, it just showcases how social media has gotten out of hand in some cases.

Again technology like everything else it a double edge sword, it cuts both ways and most likely just because the alum and fans thought they deserved better did everything they could to damage someone's reputation and now their soon to be Head Coach (supposedly) is renown for being not the most approachable individual plus has had a checkered past with dealing with players as well.

Revenge is a dish best served cold and Phillip Fulmer served it on a platter to former AD John Currie playing the Cassius role ever so eloquently with Chancellor Beverly Davenport being Brutus knifing Currie in the back.

It was John Currie years ago as associate athletic director that played an integral role in getting Fulmer relieved of his coaching duties. Not sure how much better off Tennessee with be for this because if they truly had an opportunity to land Jeff Brohm, they will look back on this saga with great disdain.

Now I believe Tee Martin will be the next Head Coach for the Volunteers, he seems to be the only one left standing and Martin has received many accolades of being a great recruiter and the Volunteer fan base will have one of their own, however, Martin does not call the plays at USC and has never been a Head Coach. Anyway, it will be a blessing to have Fulmer in his corner, but being Athletic Director Phil, means more than Football. There are other aspects of Athletics at the University, even though presently, it sure doesn't seem like it.

Did Leach bail?

No, they are just starting the process over again with Fulmer and I would be shocked if Tee Martin is not hired as the next Head Football Coach at Tennessee. He will be well received until they start to lose again...Those were the days, when Head Coaches dressed appropriately.

But there were negotiations with Leach, were they rescinded? I get that Fulmer is brought on but unless they tore up any agreements, the negotiations would be active.
Weird how it was dropped.

From what I gather when Currie went to the Chancellor (Beverly Davenport) about Leach, that is when he was relieved of his duties, so that is when negotiations were put on hold and or rescinded.

IMO a bad fit, Leach runs an exciting offense and has a winning record, but when dealing with players has a checkered past and too many other factors that will make me believe Fulmer has someone else in his sights like maybe hiring Les Miles with Tee Martin as OC for example.

Lawl. Tennessee is a total mess. I'm happy because that means an easier route through the East when the Mizzou Tigers rise!

Just lost their OC Josh Heupel (UCF), not sure how that will play out next year.

NCAA president Mark Emmert rips Tennessee over chaotic coaching search

Tennessee’s multi-week, on again-off again coaching search has caught the attention of the president of the NCAA — and not in a good way.

While the Volunteers have agreed and then backed out of deals, had various coaches turn them down, dismissed their athletic director, and really not brought any order to their coaching search process, Mark Emmert has seen enough.

According to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Emmert crushed the Tennessee administration for its incompetence throughout the process.

“When a school isn’t in alignment with all of its key leaders on an important personnel hire, ‘Then you get Tennessee.'”

That’s harsh.

The latest reports indicate that Tennessee has narrowed its list to two current SEC defensive coordinators, with former Tennessee QB Tee Martin being a possibility but not as probable.

Numerous other programs in the FBS have hired new coaches within the time that the Volunteers have conducted their search.

It'll be tough for sure, but at least we have a head coach worth a damn.

Still not sure about Odom, he was 1-5 and then won six straight as his offense bailed him out and he's a defensive coach. I want to see how it plays out next year.

Odom kept this team together during the last Pinkel year, and he recruits and develops fairly well. It helps that Lock is returning next year, along with several key contributors such as Rountree and Hall.
