I could point out the seemingly obligatory long run the Rams give up early in games, but that's not what this post is about. The Rams went conservative in the last Saints TD drive, playing a prevent style defense, and they didn't slow the Saints down at all as they marched down and scored..

Why do it? That was a Fisher strategy, that had me feeling like it was 2016 all over again.

Meanwhile, our offense still was in attack mode with the pass/play action at the very same time. It would have been better for the defense to attack, one-on-one and maybe get a turnover than to "keep it all in front of them..." and not be able to stop the gaining momentum of the Saints...

Can you provide cliff notes?

.
Here it is on 11/30. Very last question of the clip. He pretty much was talking probabilities about a two score game and getting the Saints below two minutes before having to score twice (w/and onside kick). He said that "we" didn't do a very good job of that because they haven't been able to practice that too often....We will do it better next time, he. said.

I hate the prevent defense and anyone who uses it when only ahead by one score or less is just asking to lose. But with us ahead a couple of scores I don't have a problem with it if executed correctly. But the Saints were allowed to get out of bounds on almost every play. Give up the yards and waste the clock is fine. Give up the yards, give them time, and let them score... no bueno.

Yeah, Romo pointed it out. Give up yards but don't allow the out route. If the Saints grab that onside kick it would have been desperation mode for the defense.

And Wade- if you didn't get to practice it much, then why use it. And why not go and change the tactic when it wasn't working?

He had confidence in his guys but realized after the fact that a) it was Drew Brees, so any defense you implement against him had better be solid or he's going to exploit it and b) they hadn't practiced it enough.

I dunno that it was a mistake as much as it was a misjudgment.

it's why it's so important for teams to constantly keep reevaluating, success or failure.

30 second TD is unacceptable. The onside kick was very close to being successful , and then 7-4 was a real possibility.

I hate the prevent as much as the next guy. But imagine if we gave up a first or second play TD over the top of the defense.

You have to keep stuff in front of you and try to keep them in the middle of the field.

There were some breakdowns in coverage that Wade was referring to. If we executed then the scheme was good.

With the saints having no timeouts getting into to under 2:00 meant victory, barring the onside recovery.

We all have wondered why successful teams change their defensive strategy to a "prevent defense" at the end of a game. I have only one thing to say. IN WADE I TRUST!

The good thing to come from this is now WP has film he can use to coach the guys up so that they do slow down the next team that gets them in this situation. I trust WP knows more about the game than most living people, he's been coaching as long as I have known football existed.
