When I was in the Navy, and I am sure that they do the same in today's Navy, they awarded every person of the first crew to man the ship. They became the only plank-owners of that ship, unless it was a special ship which was mothballed and then recommissioned like the Iowa Battleships were in the 1980's, in which case the recommissioned ships crew also became plank-owners. I remember when Jeff Fisher moved the team to LA and the LA Coliseum, I thought about whether any of these guys would play/coach in the new Inglewood stadium? If Littleton is let go, along with Michael Brockers, who is left? With Bones gone, none of the coaching staff has survived to coach at SoFi. Off the top of my head, only Gurley(?), Donald, Hekker, Zeurlein (?), and Jake McQuaide are left.

I can't quite read the ship name? USS Olympic (?)

USS Olympia - named after the city of Olympia, WA.

Second or third ship to ever carry that name. The more famous USS Olympia was Commodore Dewey's flagship that fought in the Battle of Manila Bay during the Spanish-American War.

When was that ship made? I don't remember that name when I was in Reagan's Navy...

Built at Newport News Shipbuilding, keel laid in 1981, commissioned in 1984 (November 17th). After sea trials and the shakedown period, made its way over to the Pacific Fleet, homeported out of Pearl Harbor in Submarine Squadron 1. It's currently up in Washington getting ready to be decommissioned (which is another way of saying "damn, I'm old!").

What kind of ship was it? Mine was built about the same time in Pascagoula, MS and is now at the bottom of the Pacific after it was sunk for practice by an Australian Submarine. She is located at....

688/Los Angeles Class fast attack submarine.

The Olympia actually did their own sink-ex a couple of years ago, but it was a decommissioned US destroyer that the sunk.

Edit - BTW, what kind was your and what was its name?

I was actually wondering about the Plank Owner issue. I know my friends who have Whiner season tickets were allowed to buy "Bricks" that were layed somewhere to be displayed with whatever names they wanted. Figured we would do something but haven't heard of anything.
