Ricardo Lockette needs neck surgery, will miss rest of season

Seahawks wide receiver Ricardo Lockette was injured after being blocked by Cowboys safety Jeff Heath on a Cowboys punt return late in the first half of Sunday’s game, which led to a lengthy delay as medical personnel evaluated Lockette before putting him on a stretcher.

It was a scary scene, but Lockette had feeling in his extremities after being taken to the hospital. He also suffered a concussion and the Seahawks announced Monday that he will need to have surgery on his neck.

Lockette suffered ligament damage in his neck on the play and will have surgery at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas on Monday to stabilize the condition. They add that his prognosis for recovery is good.

What that means for his football career is less clear, however. Coach Pete Carroll was on 710 ESPN on Monday and said, via Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times, that Lockette will miss the rest of this season. He also said “I don’t know that” when asked if it could be a career-ending injury.

We wish Lockette the best for a complete return to health whether or not that means a return to the football field.

That was a very scary looking injury. He dropped straight to the ground and didn't move for a long time after getting blocked. He was there on the turf for a very long time without moving... he finally showed movement when they had him strapped down on the stretcher.

Yeah, you never want to see that as an NFL fan no matter your team affiliation. LeVeon Bell's injury was just as uncomfortable to see. Lockette is extremely fast and will be missed by the Seahawks.

I would retire after that, if I were him. That's a lot of damage to your most important body part (no, not that one, fellas). In today's NFL, I don't know how players can convince themselves to come back after major head injuries that threaten your ability to move, talk or think.

Even though the hit had devastating results for the young receiver, the hit looked clean to me. I thought it was pretty even, man vs man, straight up. But the refs threw the yellow and called illegal cut block.

Either way...ligament damage in the neck is rare. Guess we can call him stiffy for a few months.

Lockette clearly saw Heath coming because you can see him brace for a hit so it wasn't a blind block and the hit was aimed at Lockette's chest until Lockette pulled his head down just before contact. These kind of freak plays come with football no matter what the rules are changed to. Every player who straps on their helmet and steps out on that field is aware of the risk involved. Its sad to see it cut short so many careers but the same thing could happen to the average person that gets into their car at any given time.

They still upheld the blindside block call during the game. I couldn't belive it at the time, but maybe the refs felt sorry for the Seahags.

It wasn't an illegal block, the refs were wrong on that.

It happened so fast, I don't know if he was completely ready for the hit....Maybe him bracing caused him to lower his head, and he doesn't normally do that....IDK....It was a nice, legal shot I thought....didn't see the head snap back...
