I was watching the game. I almost shut it off when Ryan got picked on the ball to Jones (that lead him by too much IMO). The no call on Sherman was quite brutal! Heck, if holding a receiver's arm(s) down was legal everybody would be a multimillionaire DB. The NFL should be on top of this, but, they should be doing plenty of things.

I hate the Hawks, but it's hard to get excersized about them right now. Even though we beat them consistently it doesn't matter because we can't beat teams outside of the division, mostly...and they do (with or without ref assists). How freaking sad is that?

Falcons-Seahawks was one of the best games of Week 6 between what have been two of the NFC’s best teams this season. Julio Jones had a huge day against Richard Sherman and the Seahawks’ secondary, catching seven passes for 139 yards and a touchdown. Down 26-24 and driving for a potential game-winning score, the Falcons targeted their big receiver, and he almost made a play ... and might have if he hadn’t been grabbed by Richard Sherman.

On one hand, last-gasp plays tend to be refereed more loosely relative to most plays during games. On the other, oh man that is so pass interference. Jones obviously thought so.

Sherman didn’t really deny that there might have been illegal contact on the play, but added that. “I thought there was interference on our offense on a few plays.”
It doesn’t help that Sherman had a tough time guarding Jones throughout the game. Sherman was also upset that he wasn’t in charge of marking Jones more often. He blew up at defensive coordinator Kris Richard after Jones was allowed to line up inside of Sherman and torch the Seahawks’ secondary for a 79-yard touchdown.
Sherman wasn’t as upset as the Falcons will be. If a penalty had been called, the Falcons would have had the ball near the Seahawks’ 35-yard line and at the edge of field goal range with roughly a minute and a half left. The non-call renewed the debate over what should be considered a reviewable play by the referees. Unfortunately for Falcons fans, pass interference is not one of them.
Ohhhh, Atlanta is going to be mad about this one for a while.

The Falcons nearly pulled off a major upset at Seattle, which would have been the final act of an impressive Panthers-Broncos-Seahawks triumph trifecta. Atlanta ultimately lost the game, and the most glaring play responsible for it involved an incident of pass interference that wasn’t called.
The replays make the infraction obvious. Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman grabbed the right arm of Falcons receiver Julio Jones, keeping Jones from extending with both hands to make the catch on a deep ball thrown down the middle of the field with Atlanta facing fourth and 10. Although Jones nearly secured with ball with a left hand, his chances of catching it would have been much better if Sherman hadn’t impeded Jones.
It’s possible that Jones would have drawn the flag if he’d flopped to the ground (although it wouldn’t have been a flop, per se). It’s also possible that, if pass interference weren’t a spot foul, the flag would have been thrown. Regardless, the call was missed — and the Falcons are livid.
Yes, coach Dan Quinn said all the right things at his post-game press conference. The team is nevertheless privately furious, in part because the call was missed and in part because there was no way to fix it.
Pass interference currently isn’t subject to replay review in the NFL. The rule has been defended in the past by describing the existence of pass interference as a judgment call. But even “judgment” can be exercised so poorly that indisputable visual evidence of the error exists.
The fact that it’s a spot foul makes it even more important to correct obvious errors. And “obvious” should be the key word; if it’s clear that the officials made a mistake, the league should correct it with replay review.
Maybe the good news is that situations like this will prompt the NFL to include defensive pass interference within the scope of reviewable plays. Not that the change would help the Falcons, who are now 4-2 when they could have been 5-1.
