Seahawks 'definitely will' run the football more after pass-heavy 2016

In the Seahawks' first year without Marshawn Lynch, they struggled to run the ball, ranking 25th in rushing yards and 24th in yards per carry. It wasn't just the yardage; it was also the number of times they tried to run the ball, as they finished 20th in rushing attempts.

This week, in an interview with 710 ESPN Seattle, Pete Carroll addressed that issue, saying the Seahawks "definitely will" run the football more in 2017.

"We definitely will," Carroll said about running the ball more, according to ESPN.com. "We lost 100-something runs last year. And that was basically the story. That was basically the tale of why everything came about as it did. The defense had to do some more stuff. We had to throw the ball more. We had to pass protect more and all of that because the running game got knocked up.

"With the quarterback being a mess and the running-back situation, everybody being banged up, we were just unable to find it. So I think we'll come roaring right back at it."

It's true, the Seahawks really did get away from the running game last year.

Compare the numbers above to 2015, when the Seahawks ranked third in rushing yards, seventh in yards per attempt, and third in attempts, and to 2014, when the Seahawks ranked first in rushing yards, first in yards per attempt, and second in attempts. Meanwhile, Russell Wilson set career highs in 2015 and 2016 in passes attempted. Though there are a number of factors that can contribute to the decline of the Seahawks' rushing game -- Wilson's injury issues, the lack of a dominant ball-carrier, holding fewer leads, etc. -- it's clear that the Seahawks have gotten away from something that made them so great during their peak.

The Seahawks' moves this offseason back up Carroll's comments, namely their decision to sign ex-Packers running back Eddie Lacy. With Lacy now aboard -- and at the weight they want him at -- the Seahawks have quite the trio to run behind their shaky offensive line. It's a group that also includes Thomas Rawls, who shined in 2015 but stumbled last year, and C.J. Prosise, who looked like an up and coming star last year until he suffered a shoulder injury.

If that group can stay healthy -- admittedly a big if -- they should form a formidable ground assault, though it's worth noting that they might not be the best group to lean on in Fantasy given their status as a committee.

Not good. They are basically going back to the formula that led to their success. And maybe I'm wrong, but in general, hasn't Wade Phillips defenses these past couple of decades been better vs. the pass than vs. the run?

I am not worried about Seattle's run game until they proved they can run again. Without Lynch and Rawls they haven't against the Rams--even with Lynch in 2015 they couldn't. They may have upgraded their line with the last few drafts....so, maybe they will be successful....but I am not counting on it....they have no dominant linemen....imo...

I am a bit worried about teams running inside on us throughout the game....unless Barron can play like Deone Buchannon of the Cards at ILB. Barron is awesome, but can he hold up??

IDK, that Denver defense stopped everything, run, pass, gadget plays, etc....And as to Eddie Lacey, he's always a biscuit away from 275lbs IMHO. Their defense is trending downward IMHO and I don't worry about the others until the Rams are good enough because as of right now the San Francisco had two victories in 2016 and both of them were against the Rams, so I can't worry about everyone.

Denver was 28th in rushing defense last year. And Lacy just met an off season weight clause at 253 according to Sirius NFL radio.

I don't think it'll work. It all depends on their RB's staying healthy. So far both Lacy and Rawls have had troubles staying healthy for a full season, and Prosise was also injured last year. It also only works if your defense is shutting opposing teams down, if they regress this year Seattle is in trouble. I don't think a better run game would've stopped the Falcons in the playoffs.

3-4 always susceptible to the run, keep in mind the other knock on Lacey is durability as well, however, with sharing carries, that might not be an issue. Again to this point can't worry about the others until I feel the Rams have an opportunity to win week in and week out, but with Russel Wilson the Seahawks are always going to be a team in the division to be concerned about.

It might have slowed them down some and given the defense more rest. But, yes, the outcome would have probably been the same given that their stud safety Earl Thomas was out with a broken leg. He's the real key to their secondary.

Looking at Phillips video below, leads me to believe that Ogletree might be better off at Barron's projected spot and someone else should be playing Ogletree's projected spot.

Maybe they could have a few packages with Forrest, Hager or even Ebukam if he's versatile enough since I doubt he'll be much more than a situational rusher as a rookie. It will be very interesting to see how the ILB's play in this new system.
I do like Barron a lot though, I just don't know how his body will hold up. He should have had 3 more INTs last year, but he was solid in coverage. Curious to see he Wade will deploy him since Tree isn't the best at taking on and shedding blocks. Seems we have two run and hit LBs who like to go around blocks instead of through them.

They lost their best lineman....a guy outta Mizzu...think it was Britt...Justin...the center. Most of their Offensive lineman have been low level picks...once their line jells......I believe their running game will return...not to beast mode levels, but they do have some talent.

This. Until proven otherwise I'm not worried about a fat ass running back and a combo of injury prone dudes.
Beast Mode is what made their offense go and neither one of these turds are him. They might have a spark now and again but I'm not to worried. Russel scrambling and passing or running it worries me!

Nailed it here.....This is exactly what concerns me also about the SeaHags.......It's the scrambling and making plays on the move that one has to watch out for when playing the Squawks.

Awesome. Barron taking on guards doesn't sound like a good idea. Phillips could switch up some against running teams and passing teams. I would think against bigger lineman and running backs Phillips needs a bigger Mike. I see Ogletree as more of a Mo from Wade's description as well. Let's see how long Lacy can stay healthy.

Denver's offense was bad (27th overall) and i think we as Rams fans know how that can make a good defense look weaker going strictly by the numbers.

It looks like they lack a strong physical presence in the middle. Get Patrick Willis to come out of retirement and sign him.

I don't see where the OLine talent is. That line was atrocious last year. If not for Wilson's scrambling they would have no offense. How will they run the ball exactly? Luke Joeckel, Oday Abushi, Mark Glowinski, Germaine Ifedi, and Pocic a rookie. Have any of them been good in the NFL? The RBs can't make their own holes.

I like Barron in a 4-3 defense. But I still have my concerns about him in a 3-4, even in Wade's system.
Ogletree on the other hand looks like a good 4-3 MLB or M (in Wade's defense), but unlike Barron to me he looks like a potential All-Pro 4-3 WLB or Mo in Wade's system to me.

I have high hopes for Forrest, too. But, I can't help but to notice that the Buffalo Bills are switching away from Rex Ryan's 3-4 to a 4-3 defense under HC Sean Mcdermott & DC Leslie Frazier. They have two perfect fits for that M spot who might be questionable fits for their new defense in Preston Brown & Reggie Ragland (missed rookie season coming off injury). IMO, it sure would be nice if the Rams could flip a draft pick their way for one of them so Olgetree could play in the Mo spot in Wade's defense....Would be nice if they could get Ian Seau away from them too as I believe he would fit perfectly in Wade's 3-4 defense.
