Earlier this month, St. Louis Rams quarterback Sam Bradford made a slight adjustment to his contract, a source with knowledge of situation confirmed.

Bradford was scheduled to earn $12 million in fully guaranteed base salary with a $15.595 million cap number in 2012, the third season of a six-year, $78 million contract he signed as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.

Bradford will still earn $12 million and his $15.595 million cap number for 2012 is unchanged, but the two sides have changed how the $12 million will be delivered. As part of a renegotiation from May 9, half of the $12 million in base salary was converted to a roster bonus that was paid on May 11. The remaining $6 million will be paid out in base salary during the 2012 season.

The final three seasons of Bradford's contract were unchanged. He is still scheduled to earn $9 million in base salary in 2013, $8 million of which is guaranteed, $14.015 million in 2014 and $12.985 million in 2015. Up to $800,000 in escalators are available in each remaining year of the contract with $2 million available in total incentives.

After taking every snap from center and winning Rookie of the Year in 2010, Bradford was limited to 10 games last season by an injured ankle that has yet to fully heal. In 26 career games, Bradford has completed 57.6 percent of 947 pass attempts for 5,676 yards with 24 touchdowns and 21 interceptions.

Why was this done? Does it help cap numbers for the team? Does it help Sam's or the team's tax situation? Just curious because it doesn't seem to change much.

I would like to know as well.

I have a feeling it is tax related, as tax rates are poised to increase at years end, but I dont know for sure. If the money would have been paid out prorated, rather than in a bonus, then the money received during 2013's portion of the league year woulda been taxed at a higher rate.
