The Saints had several veteran free agent running backsin for workouts on Tuesday and they signed one of them on Wednesday.

Agent Mike McCartney announced on Twitter that his client Brian Leonard has earned a job with the Saints. Leonard joined Tim Hightower, Andre Brown and Mikel Leshoure in trying out for the team and the former Ram, Bengal and Buccaneer obviously showed more than his fellow aspirants.

Leonard played 16 games for Tampa last season and set career highs in carries and rushing yards, although the totals were modest for the longtime reserve. He also caught 29 passes for 179 yards, which was a familiar role for him in Cincinnati and St. Louis as well on his way to compiling more receiving than rushing yards in his NFL career.

Leonard’s addition indicates some concern that Pierre Thomas and Khiry Robinson will remain out of the lineup for New Orleans. Mark Ingram has run well in their absence, but he’s also taken on a heavy workload and Leonard’s arrival could alleviate some of the burden on Ingram’s shoulders.

UPDATE 2:37 p.m. ET: The Saints announced the signing of both Leonard and safety Jamarca Sanford. They released center Eric Olsen and placed safety Vinnie Sunseri on injured reserve.

Hated that pick. Wanted Ryan Kalil. Still bitter.

Liked even though you meant Linehan. The Rams traded Leonard during the 2009 offseason.

Carriker's misuse was bad. Leonard's was just... ugh.

A few years down the road, we might be thinking of Linehan and Fisher as the bad coaches.

Got a soft spot in my heart for Spags. Felt he at least improved the team. Know it's not a majority view though.

wont get into a battle over this, but hasnt Fisher already won more games as Rams coach than Spags

Not wanting a battle on this either, and I've stated my position before in a longer message... Fisher inherited a 7-9 team (not counting a 2011 utterly killed by injuries) and has kept them 7-9. And in fact, we'd be very happy to go 4-3 down the stretch and finish 7-9 again this year. Spags inherited a 2-14 team and got them to 7-9 within a couple of years.

But in the end, it all comes down to how you look at it.

Yeah, I still have a hard time with the whole, Spags inherited a 2-14 team, and went 1-15 thing

I view a coach's first year as him taking the reins of what the previous guy left for the most part. It starts becoming his team in his 2nd year, when he improved from 1-15 to 7-9.

Again, just the way I view it, and I know it's not a majority view. And I apologize for the thread hijack.

I see what you did there.
What you are trying to say is that New Orleans signed former Ram Brian Leonard.
You sneaky freak you....

I admit, I loved the Leonard pick. But in all fairness, I went to Rutgers, have had season tickets for 20 years and he was a true joy to watch.
But yeah, even with Linehan using him wrong, he was way over drafted. Still in theleague though, that says something

I liked the pick... I just thought he'd be used for what he was instead of Linehan trying to jam a square peg into a round hole AGAIN.

Yep, that was truly our last season of being remotely relevant. Won 4 of first 5, then won last 3 to show .500. Bulger had a career year, SJax had one of the best RB seasons period, Ike and Torry did their thang...
Hard to believe that was 2006 season.
Sigh....

No need to apologize. Carry on.

I look at Spags vs. Fisher like this - who was the owner and GM while Spags was the HC and who is the owner and GM while Fisher is the HC? Was gloriously happy to see Spags fired due to his incompetence but he really did have a lot to overcome.

Between Linehan, Haslett, and Spagnuolo the Rams had a combined record of 23 wins and 73 losses. That's the history Fisher inherited. But he also gets to work with Les Snead instead of Shaw. I figured that when we hired Fisher that he would rebuild this team and get us to an 8-8 level until the next HC takes over. He hasn't disappointed.
