Roster Reset: NFC West

San Francisco and Seattle spent the last few years establishing themselves as the preeminent heavyweights of the NFC. They face a tougher challenge now: staying atop the mountain.

The 49ers and Seahawks were notably quiet during free agency as they dealt with salary cap concerns and saved up for future deals. These are "good problems" that great teams often face.

Seattle was confident letting go of a number of key contributors because it has a deep bench ready to step up. Michael Bennett got big bucks to stay, and future monster contracts will be spent on their own guys -- Earl Thomas, Russell Wilson and Richard Sherman among them. The 49ers have done their work at the margins if the market, making low-level trades for reclamation projects like Blaine Gabbert and Jonathan Martin. Contract extensions for Colin Kaepernick and possibly Aldon Smith are in the offing. The 49ers view injured "redshirt" '13 draft picks Tank Carradine and Marcus Lattimore as key offseason additions.

The relative quiet from the 49ers and Seahawks this offseason was typical of the whole division. The NFC West is the best division in football because of its defenses and head coaches. But the division didn't get much better over the last month.

In our Roster Reset series, Around the League will rank teams in each division based on how much they improved this offseason. The NFC West is up next.

1. Arizona Cardinals

How they improved: Picking up left tackle Jared Veldheer was one of the best signings in all of free agency because it was such a massive upgrade for coach Bruce Arians' offense. The left tackle position held Arizona's offense roster hostage dating back to when Kurt Warner roamed the desert. With improved protection, Carson Palmer has the weapons to go down the field more often.

The Cardinals didn't make many huge splashes otherwise, but the Veldheer move alone is enough to stand out after this quiet month in the division. Arizona essentially replaced slot receiver Andre Roberts with Ted Ginn, which hurts the passing game slightly and helps the team's return game. Antonio Cromartie joins a talented secondary, replacing the departed Antoine Cason. Cromartie has the skill set to be a difference-maker, but he's as unpredictable as a Palmer throw in the fourth quarter. In Cromartie, Patrick Peterson, and Tyrann Mathieu, the Cardinals have three players that excel in man coverage.

What's next?

» More line help: The signing of Veldheer and the return of guard Jonathan Cooper solves the left side of the Cardinals offensive line, but the right side still needs help. The Cardinals could still invest an early draft pick or two.

» Pass rushers: Arizona has an incredible defensive line anchored by Calais Campbell and Darnell Dockett. But Todd Bowles' 3-4 defense needs some classic outside linebackers. John Abraham is a year-to-year proposition, and Matt Shaugnessey, just re-signed, is not a long-term solution.

» Safety: Mathieu is great, but he's coming off a torn ACL. Tony Jefferson and and Rashad Johnson currently are slated to compete at the other spot.

2. St. Louis Rams

What's changed: After two offseasons full of big splashes, general manager Les Snead professed belief in his roster. He showed it by staying quiet in free agency. The team's biggest ticket move was bringing back guard Rodger Saffold, and that only happened after the Raiders failed Saffold on a physical. St. Louis did well to upgrade its backup quarterback spot from Kellen Clemens to Shaun Hill, and said goodbye to a pair of middling guards, albeit starters.

In wide receiver Kenny Britt and defensive tackle Alex Carrington, Snead grabbed two low-cost players with potential to make an impact. Carrington adds depth to a potentially scary defensive line. Britt adds another question mark to a position group full of them. Snead's big signing from two years ago -- Cortland Finnegan -- was too expensive to keep around.

What's next?

» Maximize No. 2 overall draft pick: Don't be surprised if the Rams trade out the No. 2 spot to pick up a raft of draft picks, like they did with the Robert Griffin trade. (They also hold pick No. 13.) The Rams say they don't want a quarterback and may not see Jadeveon Clowney as a fit with Robert Quinn and Chris Long in town. This draft needs to set up the Rams for years to come. Because ...

» Plenty of needs to fill: For all the talk of the Rams as a team on the rise, this group has big holes on the offensive line and the secondary. They might like the talent on their roster, but it still ranks fourth overall in the division.

3. San Francisco 49ers

What's changed: The most interesting part of the 49ers' offseason didn't show up on the transaction wire. The team stayed busy dousing the flames from reports about coach Jim Harbaugh's wandering eye. His management style has created tension in the building that threatens to short circuit what he and GM Trent Baalke have built over the last three years.

The 49ers' rugged roster has stayed mostly intact. San Francisco kept Anquan Boldin rather than invest in a speedier receiver on the open market. They replaced Donte Whitner's big hitting at safety with Antoine Bethea's excellent coverage skills. They lost trusted cornerback depth with Tarrell Brown and Carlos Rogers left. Jonathan Martin and Blaine Gabbert both have big names, but Martin has an uphill climb to see the field. If Gabbert plays much in 2014, the tension will take the pleats out of Harbaugh's pants.

What's Next?

» Pay Colin Kaepernick: The 49ers, tight to the salary cap, stayed quiet in free agency in anticipation of giving Kaepernick a huge new deal. Harbaugh has essentially campaigned for his quarterback to get top dollar, so it should be a matter of time.

» Resolve Harbaugh situation: Harbaugh should get a new contract if the sides are as in-step as they claim publicly. Anything less sends a message that this could be his final season in San Francisco.

» Speed at receiver: Michael Crabtree and Boldin make up a fine starting duo, but this team is lacking a deep threat. The 49ers also need to get younger on the defensive line and develop a quality cornerback. They have six draft picks in the first three rounds to do so.
4. Seattle Seahawks

Why this offseason isn't so bad: Seahawks dumped quality starters like defensive linemen Red Bryant and Chris Clemons in salary cap moves. They also lost starters like wideout Golden Taint, cornerback Walter Thurmond, and tackle Breno Giocomini. Even role players like Clinton McDonald got paid elsewhere by teams wanting a whiff of that Super Bowl smell.

The Seahawks are ranked fourth in terms of "improving" this offseason because a lot of talent left the building. Their biggest acquisition from outside the team was ... Philip Adams? And yet, we don't think it will matter much because Pete Carroll has a plan in place for all the departures. Tony McDaniel and Cliff Avril will replace Bryant and Clemons in the lineup. Seattle has the right depth to replace Thurmond and Browner at cornerback. More importantly, Carroll and general manager John Schneider count on developing players to step into new roles. They understand they often only have players for four years, just like at USC.

The middle-tier players can move on. The Seahawks must save their money for the rare guys like Earl Thomas, Richard Sherman and Russell Wilson. Speaking of which ...

What's Next?

» Lock up Thomas: NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported in February that Thomas will be the team's first priority in long-term contract talks, even before Sherman. The Seahawks should get that contract out of the way so they can focus on Wilson and Sherman next year.

» More weapons: Sidney Rice is still a free agent. Taint is gone. The Seahawks still don't have a quality pass-catching tight end. Seattle should add a wide receiver in the draft, and it wouldn't be a surprise to see the team bring back Rice and possibly sign tight end Jermichael Finley when he's medically cleared.

» Offensive line help: The right side is still a problem. Wilson was constantly under duress last year.

The last two years San Fran & Seattle after great winning season have had their rosters plucked as the usual way in the NFL for winners. In addition its time to pay BIG TIME for those two QB & many other team stars..San Fran first then Seattle...Both teams have weaker rosters going into 2014 where St Louis & AZ will have stronger rosters in spite of what the Sports Talking Heads (ESPN & like)propagandize!

If AZ & STL can beef up their OL lines & develop a strong running games...Seattle & San Fran will be seriously threatened for 1 & 2 spots in the Western Division. This Western division will be a free for all where the best games will come from playing each other....The survivor will be king of the NFL as far as war experience . It's been a huge deal for us the past two seasons, too. Snisher has done a great job thus far and that's why we're even in a position to take the big jump.

The last two years were equally important.

I think we are good health, and a couple players taking the next step (as QUinn did) from being a REALLY good team.

Most of the Seattle fans appear to be looking elsewhere than the Rams for any serious competition. When you go to the Seahawks NFL main page you will see a poll question....
http://www.seahawks.com/

Which home opponent do you think poses the greatest challenge for the Seahawks in 2014?
9ers 62%
AZ 17%
Denver 9%
Packers 7%
Rams 3 %

Hopefully Seattle team makes same mistake! but I doubt it- the first game we thumped them- but lost- but I assure you they remember getting manhandled that game.

I wish when the schedule comes out it has us playing them up there to open the season. Nothing would be sweeter than to kick their arse on their home field and have them start 0 - 1! I HATE the friggin' seahawks and their fans!

I'm not sure it happens this season but i definitely think the division will trend in favor of us and AZ in the next few years. Advantage us. We're younger and we've got a defense that has more pieces in place for the long haul IMO.

I for one really like the way Snead and Fisher are building this team. It looks like we are building for the long haul.

Yes but that last game against us sure provided copious amounts of swagger going into the playoffs. Our DL also had its issues but it was our OL that was in total Failure. Walton defense was full of mistakes & pents, mostly on Langford & Ogletree. When Langford was removed for a random right hand slap to the forehead of a ref who was to his right back side. The DL without Langford was a mess. Maybe that's why we have seen so much attention by the Rams this off season in DT's thus far. Without Kendall things went dark real fast. Cudjo was his replacement along with others none could fill the void. Then JJ decided to spend most of his time trying to hit Taint into a coma but it was Taint who made JJ look like a WWC! JJ was incapable of covering Taint period. That's a bad sign.

The Seahawks defensive line destroyed our offensive line from the first series there was no looking back. That's where Snead needs to FINALLY insert some serious youthful healthy strengthening in this draft. We had 13 yards rushing, tied for the fewest allowed in Seattle history. That tells the story does it not. Whatever we had in that 2013 OL was not enough to overcome the 9ers & Seahawks that must be changed.

Oline was one of MANY issues- Id say a low level backup QB didnt help things either.

Yep Clemens provided the first TD by the Seahawks all by himself when he over threw Lance Kendricks in his check down the ball tipped Lances fingers and into the SB MVP hands......instant 6 pts....but the OL permitted three DL'ers in his face. The right side (Barksdale & Smith)gave way for two DL's and then OLG Chris Williams fell off after about 2 seconds . If you want to claim that Barksdale is a good ORT go re watch him in game 17....it just may change your mind some. In fairness to Clemens, Lance was late getting out. Clemens should have thrown it away. Not so sure the not as mobile Sam Bradford would have done much better.

Yes I could say the OL was one of many but that's not being correct either....way to generalized comment there tbux. If you were to rate all the Ram units as a whole the OL would rate lower that all the rest by a long margin in game 17.

We can't be an offense that can have our running game completely shut down by an opponent going forward. Obviously Clemens didn't have the ability to overcome it.
Even with Bradford back we need to get stronger up front IMO. Dictate the tempo with the run game and let Sam spread it around. It also helps to get a beefier OLine when you get inside the 5-10 yard line and the defense knows you want to run it. Until one of our WR's consistently steps up in the red zone we're gonna need to pound the rock in there.

The Ram OL could use some size & power inside in game 17 Williams & Smith were the starters most of the time and neither are known for their power. Dahl was never a power guy but was a fighter with a large amount of nasty. Notice that all three none power blockers are no longer Rams? Scott Wells falls right in that category too he is no power center either @ 6-2 300 pounds, by a long ways. Barksdale can be at time rugged enough but lacks any nasty to him.

Rams strongest power run blockers are the often injured Saffold & Long. There is a ton of room in this current OL for some young healthy mean nasty powerful run blockers!

Rams will bring in four OL'ers & four DL'ers
Stephon Tuitt, DL, Notre Dame
Jadeveon Clowney, DL, South Carolina
Aaron Donald, DL, Pittsburgh
Kony Ealy, DL, Missouri

Billy Turner, OT, NDSU
Greg Robinson, OT, Auburn
Taylor Lewan, OT, Michigan
Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&M

most of the line was back ups for the seattle game - jake long was a big part of the dominant run game in the first meet as well as saffold. saffold got injured, dahl was inactive (so was tavon austin).
Your starting line that game -
LT Saffold/Chris Williams, C Barnes, G Shelly Smith/Williams/Brandon Washington (after saffold injury), Barksdale

true- but not normal starters either- which is why the first game we dominated them- yet lost (id say QB play biggest in that one). No argument we need to upgrade the Oline- but when our starters are there- not bad at all.

Guess what I would say to my good ROD buds (tbux & iced) is.......Sure looks like the Ram current starters are not so sturdy & reliable would it not?

With so many starters injured & so many non starters having to start so much last season..... sure would point to an issue inlaying in our OL starters ......meaning there must be a injury issue with our starters not being available to prevent all those weak non starters from starting so often?

What would you suggest to Snead & Fisher that would help keep this from happening again in 2014 that has occurred so much in 2012 & 2013?
