Coroner identifies body in river as ex-Bills WR James Hardy

The Allen County (Indiana) Coroner's Office on Thursday identified the body of a man found in the Maumee River on Wednesday as former Buffalo Bills receiver James Hardy.

Hardy's cause of death has not yet been determined.

His body was found lodged in a dam in the river, according to the Fort Wayne Police Department.

According to multiple reports, Hardy's mother reported her son was missing on May 30.

The 31-year-old Hardy, who is from Fort Wayne, played two season for the Bills (2008 and '09).

The Bills sent their condolences to the Hardy family on Thursday.

The Bills selected Hardy in the second round (41st overall) of the 2008 draft after the receiver had 191 receptions for 2,740 and 36 touchdowns at the Indiana University.

He appeared in 16 games (three starts) in his NFL career, catching 10 passes for 96 yards and two touchdowns.

Hardy was arrested in Los Angeles for resisting arrest in 2014 but a judge later ruled him mentally incompetent to stand trial.

Was flipping channels and caught one of his Indiana games on TV his last year in college,
Wish I could remember the game or find a you tube clip....He reached over the smaller db in the end zone and simultaneously caught the ball. He lifted the ball up into the air with the db still holding on to it. The db's feet were over a foot off the ground from the lift.

I thought he was going to light up the NFL at the WR position.

Total Bummer.

Former Bills wide receiver James Hardy was found dead in the Maumee River in Fort Wayne, Indiana in June and the local medical examiner has made a ruling about the manner of his death.

Allen County Coroner’s Office chief investigator Michael Burris announced on Wednesday, via ESPN.com, that the office has ruled that Hardy drowned and that his death has been ruled a suicide.

The ruling was made based on evidence found on Hardy’s body as well as his psychiatric history. Harris was committed to a mental health facility in 2014 after being found not competent to stand trial for resisting arrest during a confrontation with law enforcement.

Hardy was a second-round pick in 2008, but only played 16 games for the Bills over two years as injuries helped bring his career to a quick ending.

Cases like this are all always tragic to us. Great talent (realized or not) seems like a massive loss when cut short by death. Even those who have lived a fairly long life, like Robin Williams for example, seemed like a tragedy when he killed himself. Yet, the unknown guy dying in the same manner would earn only a shrug, if we even knew about it. Does this mean a talented individual is worth more than a less talented individual?

Seems so. Better have another beer and work this one out...:sneak:

Way too young to go. But then again who are we to say when a guy is tired of it and wants to punch out that he's wrong? I feel for his family moreso than him; he's not suffering any more.

Very sad. All too familiar. I wonder if he was on an SSRI?
