Rams still trying to get Quinn his sack

Late in the first quarter of the Rams' Oct. 26 game in Kansas City, defensive end Robert Quinn chased down Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith from behind and stripped the ball loose from behind.

The play occurred behind the line of scrimmage by a yard or two, so it was clearly a sack. Rams defender E.J. Gaines tried to fall on the fumble but it rolled out of bounds. So Kansas City maintained possession with the ball spotted at the 50.

But statisticians at Arrowhead Stadium ruled the play a three-yard gain for Smith instead of a sack. (The line of scrimmage was the 47 at the start of the play.)

The Rams have been trying to get that sack back for Quinn ever since, with even coach Jeff Fisher involved.

"They still have not ruled it officially a sack," Fisher said. "The action that took place on the field is clearly a sack. The officials miss-spotted the ball. There was an error in spotting the ball. So therefore we're being told they're having difficultly accounting for those yards.

"Every yard's accounted for, it falls into different categories. They don't have a miscellaneous category right now. So we're still working on it."

Sacks became an official stat in 1982, and sacks often are reviewed. Sometimes it's a matter of determining if the play occurred at or behind the line of scrimmage _ which would be a sack. Or if the quarterback's original intention was to throw the ball instead of running it.

And sometimes it's a case of sorting out who actually brought the QB down in a scrum of bodies by reviewing game film.

So a review process to determine sack or no sack is relatively routine. But it usually doesn't take nearly four weeks _ as is the case with Quinn's play _ to sort it out.

"Yeah, it's one of those unusual things that happens once every few years," Fisher said.

So the official league stats still have Quinn credited with six sacks, instead of seven.

It's not uncommon for defensive linemen to have incentives in their contracts based on number of sacks. (That's not the case with Quinn.)

But every sack helps build a pass-rusher's reputation and his chance for postseason honors, such as the Pro Bowl. Near the end of last season, a league review that awarded Indianapolis' Robert Mathis a sack allowed him to edge Quinn for the inaugural Deacon Jones Award as the NFL's sack champion for the 2013 season _ 19 1/2 sacks to Quinn's 19.

Fisher said getting the sack added to Quinn's total, "is very important for our defense, for Rob, and the play itself. It's a sack. I have not given up yet."

As for Quinn himself, naturally he'd like to get credit for the sack but he's not stressing over it.

"No need to sit there and lose sleep about it, right?" he said. "Can't do anything about it except keep going about my preparation."

If that would have been a KC player you know they would have gave him the sack. That would really suck if Quinn finished 1 sack short again and got robbed of the sack title 2 years in a row.

Don't worry he's going to rack up five on Rivers this weekend.

That just shows this regime has some class guys that go to the mat for their players. Glad to see they are trying to get Quinn what he deserves.

I thought he was officially credited with it a few weeks ago, at least that's why Jim Thomas said? That's dumb though, give him the damn sack, it WAS a sack.

That's laughable, especially considering that Smith didn't even have the ball for those 3 yards.

If I'm not mistaken, Which we all know I rarely am, The single game record, for sacks by a single player is 6, so I'm looking for Quinn to at least tie that against the Chargers!!
