The Rams were in the market for a veteran safety and they found their man on Friday.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the Rams have signed safety Matt Giordano. Safety Don Unamba was let go in a corresponding move.

Giordano visited the team this week along with Sherrod Martin and Abram Elam as the Rams tried to find some experienced help for their young group of safeties. Giordano started 13 games for the Raiders last year and, like just about everyone else on the Raiders defense in 2012, did not play particularly well. He also started nine games for Oakland in 2011, but has primarily been a reserve and special teamer during previous stints with the Saints, Packers and Colts, who drafted Giordano with the 134th pick in the 2005 draft.

Giordano will likely compete with Darian Stewart for a starting job with 2013 third-rounder T.J. McDonald expected to occupy the other safety spot. He may not be the only veteran joining the Rams in the near future. The team has been looking at linebackers as well and could bring one to add depth and competition before training camp.

Meh, I'd rather have had Mikell back but we do need depth back there so better than nothing.... which is pretty much what he has replaced at this point lol. See how camp plays out on the backend. Might be veteran insurance more than anything since Darrian Stewart can never seem to keep himself on the field health wise.

He's better in coverage than anything. Has decent hands for a safety. I don't know if I want him starting though.

I'm still worrying that it's what I said it was. They're looking at what they have at Safety and LB and they're not happy with what they see. I think the talk about getting experience is way overblown. Where's all the experience at RB? Or WR? Considering what we had last year I don't think it's gonna hold back the D but both positions are going to be addressed big time next year IMO.

Meh. Matt Giordano? I'd have rather signed Kara DioGuardi.

I think they see a lack of experience at Safety. I think they see a lack of depth at LB. A lack of experience at RB and WR can be overcome more easily than on D. A Safety can find himself on an island so to speak and break the whole D down. At least a RB or WR can screw the pooch and just kill a drive. A Safety can give up a long TD with a blown assignment. The Rams decided to go a certain way in the draft knowing they couldn't make every position solid. Safety was it this year. I hope somebody decent shakes loose from somebody's roster to give some quality depth at both Safety and LB. I don't know if Giordano is it or not but he must be an upgrade for now.

That's certainly one way to look at it but answer me this, what's the difference between a WR who fails to catch a pass for a TD and the guy who fails to defend a guy who scores a TD? Isn't it 6 points either way?

i understand and agree with everything else you said but that just strengthens my point. They don't like what they see at Safety. And probably LB too as far as the back ups go. It's not because they want some "experience." I find it hard to believe that Fisher would replace a player unless he wasn't as good as the alternative.

Like you, I expect them to fix that next year.

Matt Giordano is leaving the Silver and Black to don the Blue and Gold of the St. Louis Rams. Apparently the Rams were in need of some veteran leadership to help out their young secondary. The man nicknamed “Gio” was utilized mainly for Special Teams and Safety with the Raiders. He will now fill that role in St. Louis.
Giordano always reminded me of Rocky Marciano when I watched him play. He always put his heart and soul into every play. When he was knocked down, he always got back up and took his lumps. Yes, he got beat on some occasions, but so did most of our secondary in 2012.
Although he suffered a shoulder and knee injury last year, he played all 16 games. The Fresno, CA, native combined for 51 tackles and had 2 interceptions in 2012. When he stepped up to make a play, the home crowd chanted, “Gio, Gio, Gio, Gio!” Though, he spent a short time wearing the Silver and Black, he is a player that will be missed by Raider Nation. Raider Nation always remembers the players that put everything they had into their position. He is definitely one of those players.
Giordano has primarily been a reserve and special team player during previous stints with the Saints, Packers and Colts. The Colts drafted him with the 134th pick in the 2005 draft. Giordano will be competing against Darian Stewart for a starting position, and the rookie, T.J. McDonald, is expected to occupy the other safety position.
Farewell, Gio, you had the heart of a lion and played like there was no tomorrow.

Sounds like a good kid. I hope he'll be able to improve our ST play.

Yes, 6 either way, but.......I feel the D mistake always hurts more. A "green" safety blowing an assignment and giving up a 70 yd TD hurts more than a WR running the wrong route or dropping a pass. Sure a rookie WR can drop an easy 80 yd bomb but it doesn't seem to happen as much as seeing a rookie getting toasted in the secondary. Rookies in the skill positions on O can be more successful because, just like on a wet field, the O player knows where he is going. The D is reacting and is forced to be "reactive" instead of "proactive".

Always remember, wisdom and treachery trumps youth and enthusiasm every time, every time.

Dissing the Offense????? You got me on that one Albe. I have no idea what you mean.

I was joking about your assertion that the offense can't screw your team up just as much as the defense can.

QB/RB/WR fumble run back for the score. Too many other examples to even mention. I think it's pretty even between the two of them but I understand your point of view.

Either way, I hope safety isn't going to be a trouble spot throughout the year.
