Rams rookie review: Week 14
By Nick Wagoner

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- A look at playing time and production of the St. Louis Rams' rookie class in Sunday's 24-0 win against the Washington Redskins.

OL Greg Robinson, first round, No. 2 overall: Robinson once again played all 62 offensive snaps and six more on special teams. The Rams had some issues in pass protection but Robinson wasn't the culprit for many of them. He continues to progress in pass protection but is still just scratching the surface of what he could become.

DT Aaron Donald, first round, No. 13 overall: Ho hum, another week, another sack for Donald, who now has four in as many weeks. He played 42 defensive snaps on the day and now has seven sacks for the season. That's the most among rookies and Donald continues to be disruptive as a run defender as well.

DB Lamarcus Joyner, second round, No. 41 overall: Joyner was a healthy scratch.

RB Tre Mason, third round, No. 75 overall: Mason remains the team's primary ball carrier, getting the most snaps among running backs with 42. It wasn't Mason's best day on the ground as he finished with just 66 yards on 20 carries and did not come up with a reception. Mason is still looking to string together multiple big statistical efforts. He also had some hiccups in pass protection including one that nearly cost the Rams the ball as quarterback Shaun Hill was dropped for a sack and fumble.

S Maurice Alexander, fourth round, No. 110 overall: Alexander played 17 snaps, all on special teams. He was once again one of the few Rams not to play on offense or defense, but he did solid work on special teams and that seems to be an area he's improving in whenever he gets an opportunity. He was credited with a tackle there.

CB E.J. Gaines, sixth round, No. 188 overall: Gaines started at cornerback once again, answering the question of what would happen when Trumaine Johnson returns. He started opposite Janoris Jenkins on the outside and moved into the nickel when the Redskins went to three receiver sets. He played all 56 defensive snaps and three more on special teams on his way to another solid day at the office. He finished with a pair of tackles in the unofficial pressbox statistics.

C Demetrius Rhaney, seventh round, No. 250 overall: Rhaney is on injured reserve for the season with a knee injury.

Undrafted rookie roundup: Running back Trey Watts played 17 snaps on special teams and had a tackle on special teams, including a key role on stopping Washington's fake punt attempt. ... Defensive lineman Ethan Westbrooks, tight end Alex Bayer and cornerback Marcus Roberson were pregame inactives.

TREY Watts has made chase Reynolds expendable.

Chase Reynolds got a stupid unnecessary roughness penalty for a late hit, right in front of the ref, a correct call by the refs. 'Skins would have been pinned at the 5 yard line if not for the penalty. No idea what he was thinking. That's the kind of stuff we're been trying to clean up, and CReynolds is supposed to be the guy that the others look up to.

Could have sworn he was injured, that's worrying, who's our 4th CB then?
I don't think we use a 4 CB set. We have not had enough healthy CBs and with the addition of Barron we go into 3S instead. So our "Max Coverage" set looks like this: 3S, 3CB, 2LB, 3DL.

Yeah but if one of the CBs gets injured then what?
I think a lot if it is based on the opponent they face. Without Jackson, Washington's WR's as a unit are not that scary. Garcon had a pretty good game statistically but a lot of if it was underneath stuff in garbage time. I think the focus against Washington was more centered around stopping Morris and making McCoy beat them. If the Rams were going up against a pass heavy team with a deep WR group you would probably see more CB's active. What they have now is working well and Alexander seems to offer more ST value than Roberson and even Joyner.

I am liking the Barron trade more and more.

General Note: The defense is really almost at full strength health-wise now and I think that also attributes to their improved play.
