Long article, but if you scroll down to the weekly chart you can see that the Rams are 5th on offense and 4th on defense. On special teams, they are Dead last.

For those of you not familiar with DVOA it is a way to measure each individual play and measure against the league average. The plays are weighted with a value. Like red zone stops or goal line stands are more valuable than first down on the 40 yard line. Averaging 4 yards a carry doesn't mean as much if a team only averages 2ypc in the red zone.

Football Outsiders uses this statistic every week.

Yeah, a punt blocked for a TD likely the culprit.
But 4/4 on FG's and 7/7 on XP says they are far from worst where it really counts

Those 2 long returns on kickoffs didn't help either. Small sample size, only 2 games. Hopefully, ST gets their shyte together. It's critical in the playoffs.

Am I too cocky to assume we're destined for the playoffs?

On special teams, they are Dead last.
I watched the Joe DeCamillis this week and he talks about us being young and
a need for gelling and he spoke as if it would get better as the season goes.

Are we relying on to much youth especially on these coverage units?
We addressed the ST's hard in the draft, but i am not so sure we shouldn't
have mad a move or two in FA to grab some of these proven ST demons.
It's not like those types of players are expensive to sign
I feel it's like any other unit. It helps to have some veteran presence and
especially leadership to get the young guys to play at a higher level
Quicker.

What do you think ELM am I rambling here or do you think signing
some vets would have made a difference?

Coverage hasn't been anything to write home about.
And we certainly aren't scaring anybody with the return game.
But yea the block and score sure as hell didn't help.

Man this is the second time I've seen someone refer to it as a punt blocked for a TD.

I get that its easier to say that but it's almost letting our special teams off the hook for a peewee level mistake

FWIW, Tampa was first almost all season last year. Was a little odd because the Saints were a good team and they beat them down twice, but Tampa's other losses were close ones to us, Chicago and KC - all playoff teams. And obviously they did end up being the best team at the end of the year.

I agree. It would help to have veteran leadership on STs. A guy or two who was on one of DeCamilas’ past successful teams could have helped.

Hekker on punts should be leading. He’s the holder for kicks but there really isn’t a problem there.

But, the return game??? The guys running back kicks have to be the leaders.

Coverage? Someone stepping up to blow up returners would help.

Aren’t we the youngest team in the league again? I’m not sure veterans help.

I think a few veterans on the field that have played well on ST could help. Either that or our entire coverage just sucks and nobody is standing out, which isn't good. Some years we have one or two guts making most of the tackles. If your team doesn't have those studs then they need to find them.

Well, it is what it is. Hekker was the last player to touch the ball, that's how it goes down in the books. If they just call it a negative rushing play and a fumble, the special teams score probably is higher
