Morning Ram-blings: Free spending

By Nick Wagoner

http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/post/_/id/11854/morning-ram-blings-free-spending

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- NFL senior writer John Clayton began his weekly mailbag this week with an interesting lede that isn't directly related to the St. Louis Rams but tangentially applies to every team in the league.

In it, Clayton discusses the free spending ways of the team the Rams beat last week, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs spent more money than any team in the league in free agency, clearly pursuing quick fixes in belief they could contend right away.

So far, that hasn't paid off for Tampa Bay, which has opened the season 0-2 despite entering the year as a trendy pick to make a surprise playoff run. Clayton also offers other recent examples of such spending not working out, including the Rams in 2011.

The Rams were frugal spenders in this offseason, something that made sense then and, at least so far, has proved wise right now. That allowed them to re-sign offensive lineman Rodger Saffold and re-up end Robert Quinn over the weekend.
