Morning Ram-blings: Mega trade failures
By Nick Wagoner

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- The St. Louis Rams have had no shortage of participation in what many would consider to be big draft-day trades since general manager Les Snead and Jeff Fisher arrived in 2012.

They made two big moves in the first round that year and followed by moving up and down the board with their two first-round picks in 2013. But only once have the Rams been the team making the bold move up the draft board by giving up additional picks to land a player they covet.

That came in 2013 when the jumped from No. 16 to No. 8 to secure the services of receiver Tavon Austin. How that trade plays out remains to be seen but the early returns have been mixed.

On Tuesday, Gregg Easterbrook offered this piece on how and why mega draft day trades don't usually pan out.

Easterbrook points to the struggles of Dallas cornerback Morris Claiborne and the injuries of Washington quarterback Robert Griffin III as a couple of examples arguing against making a bold move up the draft board. Coincidentally, the Rams were on the other side of both deals and were able to stockpile picks in exchange for both players. He also mentions the Rams' trading running back Eric Dickerson to the Colts in 1987.

There's plenty to chew on there and it's certainly worth a read.
