Rams have their starting safeties, but depth is now a question

The Los Angeles Rams addressed the safety position in a big way last offseason, signing Eric Weddle as a free agent before selecting Taylor Rapp with their first pick in the draft. The result was a safety group flush with top-tier talent and depth, which the Rams needed after John Johnson suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 6.

The depth at that position doesn’t look so great now after Eric Weddle announced his retirement on Thursday. The Rams knew they probably wouldn’t have Weddle back in 2020 after he made it clear that he didn’t want to be a backup, so this wasn’t exactly shocking news to the team.

However, Los Angeles doesn’t have much proven talent under contract behind Johnson and Rapp, who are expected to be the starters. In fact, most fans probably couldn’t name the Rams’ two primary backup safeties right now.

Nick Scott and Jake Gervase are the only backups under contract for 2020, which doesn’t instill much confidence at that spot. Combined, they played 28 defensive snaps last season – 15 for Scott and 13 for Gervase.

Marqui Christian, who was the No. 3 safety behind Weddle and Rapp, played 371 defensive snaps but will be a free agent this offseason. With Weddle retired, re-signing Christian just became that much more important.

That won’t be difficult to do considering the Rams just gained $5.25 million in salary cap space with Weddle’s retirement, money that can be used to keep Christian and possibly Greg Zuerlein, too.

But even if Christian is back, the Rams could use another safety on the roster. Gervase doesn’t have much experience and Scott is more of a special teams player than a defensive back at this point in his career.

Signing a free agent like Darian Thompson or Jayron Kearse would give the Rams another player with NFL experience behind Rapp and Johnson, in the event that an injury occurs. Christian isn’t a traditional safety, either, playing more of a hybrid role at linebacker.

This isn’t to say the Rams should make safety a top priority this offseason, but they also can’t afford to ignore the position and go into the year with Scott and Gervase as the primary backups.

They had safety Steven Parker. He's done pretty well for the Dolphins. And no Bones I'm not letting this one go.

I believe the 6-3 205 plus pound DB Adonis Alexander will see much more action @ the safety position than the corner post.

Alexander played for the Redskins in 2018 & was on the Rams Practice Squad in 2019. He has experience @ Virginia Tech at both safety positions.

I have no concerns with our signed safety cadre.

Nothing's changed for myself... I feel we need a single high guy who can prowl deep and ballhawk, the type who makes QBs pay for risky throws.

I think that would be an enormous addition to our secondary.

I think Jake Gervase was a steal & excellent find. Les Snead has been okay with trying to fill the position with lower level draft picks.

Rodney McCould & Matt Daniels come to mind. Nick Scott will improve. Hindsight being 50/50 , McSnead did well filling depth with young players from 2019 draft. Another year of experience year of experience will help.
What was the depth like last season? Weedle the starter ??

One thing is for Ejiro Evero is an excellent coach.

If Christian isn't re-signed, a safety will once again be a high draft priority for our nickel D, depth, and to replace John Johnson after next season.

And even if he is re-signed, I would still guess that it'll be a high draft priority.

It's not really a true back up position though - in our sub package that S would be on the field. That'd be a lot of snaps.

Sure, we have questions - but it's hard to imagine a rookie OL starting next year. And this S would essentially be a front 7 player. Of course, we may re-sign Christian to nip this.

Where does the Rams defense stand without Eric Weddle?

The Los Angeles Rams' defense could appear drastically different going into next season as the unit undergoes arguably its biggest makeover since Sean McVay became coach three years ago.

Gone is veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips, who came to L.A. in 2017 with McVay. Newcomer Brandon Staley will take over and inherits a defense that ranked ninth in efficiency last season, but one that had momentary and -- in three instances -- complete game meltdowns.

Staley is expected to maintain the 3-4 scheme installed by Phillips, but he could be down four key contributors from the get-go.

Veteran defensive lineman Michael Brockers, outside linebacker Dante Fowler Jr. and inside linebacker Cory Littleton are scheduled to become unrestricted free agents next month.

And last week, veteran safety Eric Weddle announced his retirement after playing 13 seasons, earning six trips to the Pro Bowl and two All-Pro honors.

Here's a look at questions facing each defensive position group this offseason.

Safeties

Weddle's production was down in his final season, but the 13-year veteran provided leadership and was the defense's on-field signal-caller last season. He had 108 combined tackles but no interceptions and only four pass deflections in a career that saw him pick off 29 and bat down 99. It's uncertain who will take over his duties going forward.

Taylor Rapp is expected to slide into Weddle's starting role after he demonstrated steady improvement throughout his rookie season. Rapp had two interceptions and six pass breakups.

John Johnson III will return from a season-ending shoulder injury for the fourth and final season of his rookie contract. Johnson has ascended into a leadership position and is among the defense's top playmakers. In six games last season he had two interceptions.

Marqui Christian, a key rotational player in the secondary last season, is a pending unrestricted free agent.

Defensive line

The line will look much different than it has the past seven seasons, with the exception of mainstay Aaron Donald.

Donald missed on a third consecutive NFL Defensive Player of the Year honor last season, but still had 12.5 sacks and is considered among the league's best defenders.

In 2020, though, he will likely play without Brokers for the first time. A force against the run, Brockers -- who just wrapped a three-year, $33.3 million deal contract -- is expected to earn another large payday elsewhere. It's uncertain who will replace him.

Morgan Fox, a restricted free agent, maintained a role as a rotational player last season and had two sacks. Justin Lawler, a seventh-round pick from SMU in 2018, spent last season on injured reserve because of a foot injury. Sebastian Joseph-Day, Tanzel Smart and Greg Gaines are expected to maintain similar roles as last season at tackle.

Outside linebackers

Fowler blossomed into the player that the Rams hoped he would be when they acquired him at the trade deadline in 2018. Last season, the fifth-year pro had a career-best 11.5 sacks and forced two fumbles.

Now he is due a payday.

Fowler is a candidate for the franchise tag (expected to be more than $13.2 million next season for linebackers) if the two sides cannot agree to a long-term contract.

There also remains the possibility that Fowler signs a long-term deal elsewhere, although he has expressed a desire to remain with the Rams -- even on a short-term deal or for potentially less money.

If Fowler does not return, the Rams could turn to Samson Ebukam -- a starter in 2018, and Ogbo Okoronkwo, who showed glimpses of his playmaking ability in spot opportunities last season.

Ebukam had 4.5 sacks last season and Okoronkwo had 1.5.

Clay Matthews III is expected to return for 12th season and the second of his two-year, $9.3-million deal with the Rams. Matthews was sidelined for three games last season after he broke his jaw in Week 5, but finished with eight sacks -- his most since 2014.

Inside linebackers

The Rams could lack starting experience at inside linebacker if Littleton departs in free agency.

An undrafted free agent in 2016, Littleton climbed from special teams standout to defensive starter after two seasons.

After leading the Rams in tackles in consecutive seasons and intercepting five passes over that same span, Littleton has expressed a desire to sign for his value, meaning it's unlikely he'll return in 2020 given the Rams' lack of salary-cap space and the team's history of letting inside linebackers go.

Micah Kiser, Kenny Young and Travin Howard are among candidates to replace Littleton or earn the second starting spot. Kiser was projected to start alongside Littleton last season before he suffered a season-ending pectoral injury in a preseason game.

After a string of injuries last season, Troy Reeder was elevated to a starting spot and finished with 53 tackles. However, the former undrafted free agent is expected to return to the role of a backup role going forward.

Cornerbacks

The cornerbacks group underwent a significant in-season makeover last season when Aqib Talib was placed on injured reserve, then traded to the Miami Dolphins, and Marcus Peters was traded to the Baltimore Ravens.

Those moves were made to acquire Jalen Ramsey, who returns for the final season of his rookie contract.

However, it remains uncertain who will start opposite of Ramsey.

Troy Hill and Darious Williams are the options currently on the roster.

Hill showed promise in nine starts last season, intercepting two passes, before he underwent thumb surgery and missed the final two games. Williams also is a young player who coaches have expressed confidence in. He intercepted two passes in each of his two starts at the end of the season.

Standout slot cornerback Nickell Robey-Coleman returns for the final season of his three-year, $15.7 million contract, though he could become a salary-cap casualty because of Hill's ability to play both outside and in the slot.

Rams have a new Defensive coaches for this upcoming season. Wade highly favored the use of many safeties sacrificing what LB'ers & CB's can positively offer on the field. Bottom line here is that Wade's Defense failed this Ram team in 2019 & Wade is gone.

Rams just hired a new DC in Brandon Staley's and re-unite w/ former colleague former Akron CB coach Johnathan Cooley as DC Staley's defensive CB/ Quality Control coach.

I would expect much less utilization of multiple safeties in the future. At the same time I expect an increase usage of our excellen multiple corners & our youthful athletic LB'ers in 2020. Rams have a special DB in Ramsey & his abilities are great & far ranging.

Starting CB Troy Hill had a very solid season with excellent PFF grade. Youngsters CB David Long & CB Darious Williams are fast good upcoming corners who need to be on the field much more in 2020.

Rams reserve safeties Jake Gervase & Nick Scott had good solid seasons. Deep safety Scott played in all 16 games. Gervase had an outstanding preseason as a strong safety.

I'd like to see a fancy ballgame added to the roster. Snead seems to find safeties among ufas each year. Plus they are some of the least expensive free agents. I still can't believe how little interest there was in Jimmy Ward. He had a great season this year.

Christian played well overall this season.
If the Rams are to use Rapp down low in that tweeter position still Christian can fill in at S in those sets.
Would resign him for sure.
Johnson, Rapp and Christian is certainly solid.
Letting the existing guys on the roster battle for that fourth spot with a mid draft pick sounds good to me.

Not really sure why so many here has a reason to believe that there is a need @ safety to force the Rams to utilize one of its very limited priceless draft selections on a 2020 developmental back up safety when we have two 2019 rookies who have been under development for almost a year now already.

Would it be rude to remind everyone Rams has the best deep free safety to come out of the college in the last two decades on our team who is only 25 yrs old & wears jersey number #20 & works in another unit?

Rams CB cadre in 2020 is the best girded unit on the Rams team? Troy Hill {9 starts in 2019}/ Darious Williams{3 starts in 2019}/ David Long/ Nickell Robey-Coleman{3 starts in 2019}/ Jalen Ramsey{8 starts in 2019}/ Donte Deayon & Adonis Alexander.

As cited many times in this forum by other members there was a good amount of decent safeties on the roster going into 2019 training camp. Since the time of the end of preseason releases there has been lamentations paid to one of them (Parker) who was discarded by McVay.

The safety who eventually ended up taking Parker's position was Jake Gervase. McVay preferred Jake to Parker & all the other strong safeties they had at that time. Even vet Safety Blake Countess was sent packing while SS Jake Gervase remained & signed. In this case I am very pleased with McVay's decision to sign SS Gervase in 2019 & he is once again under contract this season.

In addition to Gervase, Snead utilized a 2019 draft pick on a deep free safety named Nick Scott. He made the team too. Now Scott was a bona fide true developmental player. Here some collected comments made on Scott just before the 2019 draft:

* Running back turned safety with eye-popping speed and explosion numbers to counter his limited amount of starts and production at Penn State.....

* He's a developmental prospect.....played only one season @ safety.

* is a plus fierce athlete.

* Two-time captain and noted team leader

* A great student and leader off the field.

* Explosive burst in his lateral charge.

* Size and strength to match with tight ends

Note on Nick Scott:
"Although he wasn’t invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, Scott ran a 4.43 40-yard dash and completed 18 bench press reps at Penn State’s pro day at Holuba Hall. His 40 time would’ve ranked sixth among safeties at the NFL Scouting Combine, and his 41-inch vertical would’ve checked in as the third-best among that group".

John Johnson III Looking Forward To Playing At New SoFi Stadium

1581529931877.png

For the Los Angeles Rams, this offseason has focused around the saying, “out with the old and in with the new.” The team has already undergone a number of personnel changes and will likely continue to change throughout the offseason with free agency and the draft just around the corner.

Additionally, the team is leaving the old Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum behind and moving to the new SoFi Stadium in Inglewood. The stadium and surrounding area promise to have some of the newest and best amenities in the league.

Along those lines, Rams safety John Johnson III stated that he is looking forward to to playing in a new stadium, via Sarina Morales of TheRams.com:

“Just everything being new. The turf is brand new. The seats. It’s going to be clean there. The bathrooms, locker room, everything’s new. Like new is cool, so that’s why I’m looking forward to. I know the first game and maybe even like the first season, it’d be like sold out just because it’s new, so it will be a little vibe.”

Hopefully the Rams first season at SoFi Stadium will be better for Johnson than the last season at the Coliseum was. He appeared in the team’s first six games before being placed on injured reserve with a season-ending shoulder injury. Having undergone surgery, his “new” shoulder should fit just right with all the new amenities of SoFi Stadium.

SoFi Stadium promises to be the centerpiece of a complete renovation of the Hollywood Park Racetrack. The new area surrounding the stadium will contain commercial office space, retail space, a hotel and living spaces, in addition to a park and walking path.

The stadium is set to open this July with a pair of Taylor Swift concerts. Unfortunately, there is still no date for the Rams’ first appearance at their new stadium as the 2020 NFL schedule still has yet to be released.

SoFi Stadium will also host some bigger national events as well. In addition to hosting SuperBowl LVI and the 2023 College Football Championship, the stadium will be the site for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2028 Olympics.
