Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports is reporting that the Rams have exchanged some contract figures with DE Robert Quinn. However, the two sides are reportedly not close to an agreement.

  • La Canfora can’t see a deal getting done for any less than $15 million in annual salary.
This news comes just a few days after J.J. Watt secured a massive six-year, $100 million extension that includes $51.8 million guaranteed. Quinn even responded to news of Watt’s deal online, so you can bet that he has his eyes set on similar type of contract.

St. Louis picked up Quinn’s fifth-year option that will run them $6.9 million for the 2015 season. This salary is non-guaranteed, and wouldn’t prevent them from working on a long-term deal that would reduce that figure and keep him under team control in the coming years.

Quinn, 24, is coming off of an extremely impressive season in which he totaled 57 tackles, 19 sacks, seven forced fumbles, two recoveries and a defensive touchdown.

Pro Football Focus rated him as the No. 1 defensive end in a 3-4 system by a huge margin.

Take J.J. Watt's deal, erase his name, and give it to Quinn to sign.

Don't mess around.

About 5 mil. more guaranteed than Watt, So yeah 15ish mil. average. most cap hit in first 3 years. Sounds about right. He ain't going to get any cheaper so might as well get it done.

Sign him asap before the cap goes up another $10mil and more the next year. A Watt like deal sounds good to me.

Kevin Demoff, "How 'bout THIS number?"

Quinn, "How many sacks you want for that?"

KD, "OK... How about THIS number?"

Quinn, "You do know that I aim to set the sack record - right?"

I'm sure they will get a deal done and both sides will be happy with it.

Just the fact that they are already talking numbers is a huge step up from the days of Georgia, Shaw, and Ziggy. Quinn didn't have to threaten them with a hold out to get to the table. @kdemoff is great at his job. The team is in great hands.

In this system with this coach it'll be a wise move to button this up now rather than waiting because if he improves on his numbers in this scheme he will cost more than he would now. Risking a slight downturn to save a few million is a major gamble IMO.

When you have a player that is the best at their position in the league, you give them an offer they can't refuse. Give him a contract a little over Watt's value and make the guy feel appreciated for putting up the numbers.

Hopefully soon they'll exchange signatures with Quinn.
