Rams back in St. Louis before hitting the road again

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- Upon canceling his team's scheduled Wednesday practice in Oxnard, Calif., St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher cited fatigue while fans listed possible conspiracy theories.

"The Cowboys had a day off and we were going to use the facility," Fisher said. "We’ve decided against that. We’ve got a tired team. We’re going to emphasize recovery."

Recovery from the football activities might be a simple enough task for the Rams as the extra day off in the middle of the week followed a couple of days mostly off between the preseason opener last Friday and the first practice with the Dallas Cowboys on Monday. But the real fatigue might be travel-related as much as anything.

After flying to Oakland a week ago, the Rams played the Raiders on Friday night and immediately flew to Los Angeles after the game, arriving in the wee hours of Saturday morning. They spent the following five days in nearby Oxnard, adjusting to the two-hour time change before flying back to St. Louis on Wednesday afternoon.

On Thursday, the Rams will have their first practice in St. Louis since Aug. 11. But it will be a short stay in St. Louis. The Rams have one practice Thursday night but will be back on the road to Tennessee for Sunday's preseason game against the Titans on Saturday afternoon.

"Friday is a player day off and then we’ll come in and have a walk-through and then travel down to Nashville,” Fisher said.

The Rams will get to settle in and unpack their suitcases after the trip to Tennessee, however. Their final two preseason games and the regular-season opener against Seattle are at the Edward Jones Dome. They won't travel again until Sept. 19, the day before the Week 2 contest against Washington.
