Rams add three compensatory picks
By Nick Wagoner

http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/post/_/id/7005/rams-add-three-compensatory-picks

The St. Louis Rams were already sitting in prime draft position with nine choices and two first-rounders before the NFL handed out compensatory selections Monday evening. Now, they have even more opportunities to add talent after the league awarded them three more choices for 2013 free-agent losses.

Heading toward May's draft, the Rams now hold a total of 12 picks after picking up a sixth-rounder (No. 214 overall) and two more seventh-round picks (Nos. 249 and 250) from the compensatory process.

Breaking it down further, the Rams have two picks in the first round (Nos. 2 and 13), two in the sixth and four in the seventh to go with their lone original choice in rounds two through five.

Compensatory picks cannot be traded but having that many choices likely puts the Rams in position to maneuver around the board as they wish with those other nine choices.

In the official release the NFL sent out Monday evening, the Rams were credited for losing receiver Danny Amendola, safety Craig Dahl, center Robert Turner, receiver Brandon Gibson and cornerback Bradley Fletcher and adding tight end Jared Cook and tackle Jake Long.

Conspicuous by his absence was running back Steven Jackson. The Rams allowed Jackson to void the final year of his contract and he was declared an unrestricted free agent before signing with Atlanta. It's unclear right now if Jackson was not factored into equation or if his name was an accidental omission from the league's release. For what it's worth, Jackson was not counted as an addition in Atlanta's equation.

Rams notes: Rams awarded 3 extra draft picks
• By Jim Thomas

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/foot...cle_3a6b8d3d-5021-5a65-af8b-90d5b4fc1475.html

ORLANDO, FLA. • The Rams were awarded three compensatory draft picks Monday, or more than they’ve received in the previous four offseasons combined.

“At one time, I was expecting one (compensatory pick),” general manager Les Snead said Monday at the NFL owners meetings. “Then some expert guru who has a web site and who seems to predict these things said we may get four. So I’m thinking, ‘OK, I’ll settle for two.’ So getting three is a nice win.”

The Rams get a sixth-round pick (No. 214 overall) and two seventh-rounders (Nos. 249 and 250). That gives them 12 picks in the 2014 draft. In addition to the three compensatory picks, it breaks down as follows:

• Their original seven picks — one in each round.

• An extra first-round pick (No. 2 overall ) from the trade in 2012 that allowed Washington to draft quarterback Robert Griffin III.

• A seventh-rounder (No. 241 overall) as a result of the Josh Gordy trade to Indianapolis a couple of years ago.

“Hey, it’s a deep draft,” Snead said. “Now it’s up to us to make the most of the opportunity with 12 picks. You’ve got other picks in those later rounds — now you can be flexible in using them. Late-round picks, not the compensatory picks but the other ones, give you some maneuverability.”

Compensatory picks can’t be traded. But with three non-compensatory picks in rounds six and seven, the Rams could package them in a possible trade-ups. That occurred last season when the Rams traded two sixth-round picks to move into the fifth round for running back Zac Stacy.

Besides, you never know when a late-round compensatory pick will turn into draft-day gold. Such was the case with a sixth-round compensatory selection in the 2000 draft by New England: quarterback Tom Brady.

“That is making the most of the opportunity,” Snead said.

The formula for determining compensatory picks is based on the number of free agents signed compared to the number of free agents lost during the previous year’s offseason.

It takes into account salary and playing time with the player’s new club. The Rams lost Danny Amendola, Craig Dahl, Bradley Fletcher, Brandon Gibson and Robert Turner in free agency last year. They signed Jared Cook and Jake Long.

NEW RAMS

The Rams have added cornerback/return man Greg Reid and linebacker Etienne Sabino to their offeason roster. Reid, from Florida State, was draft eligible in 2013 but suffered a knee injury (torn ACL) at his pro day so he was out of football.

Sabino was signed by the New York Giants in 2013 as an undrafted free agent out of Ohio State but was released near the end of the preseason.

PLAY DOUGH

Safety/nickel back Rodney McLeod topped all Rams in performance-based pay for 2013, earning $280,915 in extra pay. The performance-based pay program rewards players with lower-level contracts who “out-perform” their contracts based on playing time. Each NFL team received $3.46 million in performance-based pay this season.

Eight other Rams received more than $100,000 in performance-based pay for 2013: OT Joe Barksdale ($187,114), CB Trumaine Johnson ($154,266), WR Chris Givens ($151,349), RB Zac Stacy ($149,277), S T.J. McDonald ($147,264), TE/FB Cory Harkey ($142,751), CB Janoris Jenkins ($118,528), and QB Kellen Clemens ($111,178).

Sure looks like the Rams have a little small ammo of enticement material with some of these extra late third day selections. Two 6ths & four 7ths. Only 3 of which Snead can trade....Rams own 6th & 7th and the Colts 7th. Snead unlike last yr will be selecting till the very end of the day with the one 6th & two 7th comp selections, that can not be traded.

Snead traded away last years later picks for Stacy very good move one should recall in 2012 he did come up with Kicker Greg Zuerlein & quick RB Daryl Richardson really not all that bad. So looked like we will be in for the long haul going late Saturday afternoon for us on May 10th of this year. By that time of the day on Saturday the spelling in the Chat Room should get really sloppy!

Rams over the past 20 years have not been good in the later rounds either....I can recall only one starter & one real good find in the 7th round...OG Mark Setterstrom.... & he only lasted one full season before back to back knee injuries finished him.I would not mind a couple of clones of him on May 10th!

with these extras im all for trading our original 5th 6th and 7th to pick up an extra 4th rounder if sombody is willing to do it. I belive we can trade our 7th we got from the colts too. There will still be some good talent in the 4th this year and that would still leave us with 2 in the 6th and a 7th rounder. with a trade down with one of our first round picks to pick up another 2nd and maybe a 3rd we would have

2 1st rounders
2 2nd rounders
2 3rd rounders
2 4th rounders
2 6th rounders
1 7th rounder

I would have to think as long as they get the picks right in this deep draft man we could be locked and loaded this year ready to slaughter the NFC west.

What it allows them to do is take their original late round picks and package something up into the late 4th or 5th round and still retain the comp picks for who they would have been looking at originally. I don't care what any NFL scout/coach/exec says, after the 5th round most draft boards are shot to hell and people are in scramble mode. IF you can take your original late picks and go after one player who is a legit player on your board do it. The picks from the 6th and 7th are often UDFA models. In fact, a lot of teams would rather go UDFA right after the draft for certain guys then actually use a draft pick. I like how they stand right now.
