Rams at Seahawks Preview: 7 Things to Watch

To close out the 2014 slate, the St. Louis Rams (6-8) travel to Washington to face the Seattle Seahawks (11-4) in an NFC West divisional matchup. While the Rams have dropped their last two contests, the Seahawks enter the action riding a five game winning streak and can lock down home-field advantage throughout the postseason with a victory over St. Louis.
Snowing in Seattle?
As of Friday afternoon, the National Weather Service was depicting a 40 percent chance of rain or snow showers in Seattle during the Rams-Seahawks tilt on Sunday.
While air and soil temperatures are expected to be well above freezing at game time and thus make it unlikely that any snowfall would stick, expected rainfall on Friday night and throughout Saturday could make for sloppy field conditions and impact the footing of players from both teams.
In general, clubs who play their home games outdoors (like the Seahawks) deal with adverse weather conditions better than indoor teams (like the Rams).
If nothing else, a few flakes flying on St. Louis area tv's during the action might make for a nice consolation prize for Rams fans who had hoped to see a white Christmas.
Familiar Finale
It seems that St. Louis is stuck on repeat in terms of closing out their campaigns in Seattle and in the always loud and rambunctious CenturyLink Field.
This weekend's game will mark the fourth time in the last five years that the Rams have finalized their schedule within the great northwest. After dropping their 2010, 2012 and 2013 contests there, St Louis is hoping for better results this time around.
With Seattle fans setting records for volume in the past and the Seahawks being good enough to make the playoffs in three of the past four years, it is little wonder why it is so difficult for visiting teams to find success in Seattle.
“Yeah, it’s an exciting place," Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher said. "It’s a challenge. It’s different than most places in the league. That ‘12th man’ is unique and special. It’s hard to hear and they force mistakes and they take advantage of it.”
Speaking of mistakes, St. Louis Offensive Coordinator Brian Schottenheimer knows that his offense must keep miscues to a minimum if they are to be productive Sunday.
"Obviously, playing up there is extremely difficult with the noise," Schottenheimer stated. "We know it will be loud and we’ll have to keep mistakes to a minimum.”
As one might expect, Seahawks Head Coach Pete Carroll has no problem(s) at all with wrapping up the regular season at home once again.
“It’s a great place to play for us and the 12s are amazing and our players are really tuned into it," Carroll told St. Louis reporters this week. "We've been fortunate the schedule goes that way at the end. That just means we have a chance to play somewhere else, early on. I know for the Rams, they’re probably wondering when we’re going to play them at home at the last game. I’m sure it’ll come up soon.”
