CNN's Anthony Bourdain dead at 61

Anthony Bourdain, the gifted chef, storyteller and writer who took TV viewers around the world to explore culture, cuisine and the human condition for nearly two decades, has died. He was 61.

CNN confirmed Bourdain's death on Friday and said the cause of death was suicide.
Bourdain was in France working on an upcoming episode of his award-winning CNN series, "Parts Unknown." His close friend Eric Ripert, the French chef, found Bourdain unresponsive in his hotel room Friday morning.

I really liked his shows and the short lived series based on him. But damn. The dude finally seems to have succeeded at what he's been trying to do his whole life. He seemed to have the world by the reigns but in the end, the devil came calling. Sad indeed.

I agree, brilliant and fantastic and we won't see one like him for a long time if ever. There are some guys that come along once in awhile in their field of entertainment that are just not possible to replace. This is as big a loss to entertaining TV as Carlin's death was to comedy.

Something more to the story will probably come out because this was so sudden and he had work plans in place.

Thats quite the statement and compliment in comparing him to Carlin but man, I totally agree.

Well, sadly what caused him to resort to drugs and alcohol is likely part of the reason he committed suicide.
Very sad day indeed.

Personally I liked the concept of his shows but not the way he came across (kinda had that elitist, holier than thou persona).

But I loved how he went to places that no one ever would think of going, or heard of. Y'all seen his Iran deal? Yeesh, he handled that like a champ.

That is what the art of food and drink is all about. Sadly, such experiences are too expensive for the common man. I didn't like his TV personna. Maybe I would have liked him if I hadn't been on the inside of the culinary arts world.

I will say that I enjoyed his writing. I wish I had half of his skill.

When it comes to wine, beer, and spirits, Chefs are usually "know it alls" or they are dismissive. Bourdain was dismissive.

The truly elite chefs that I've been around are neither "know it alls" or dismissive.... they humble and open minded about wine, beer and spirits

To me, he was an above average foodie, a gifted entertainer and elite journalist..
