The NFL has written to the NFL Players Association in hopes of working with the union to study marijuana use as a pain management tool for players, reports the Washington Post.

According to the report, the union is conducting its own study and has not responded to the letter.

The NFL currently suspends players who test positive for the drug and modified the threshold for a positive test for marijuana.

A level of 35 nanograms per milliliter counts as a positive test, up from 15 nanograms before the change was instituted in 2014.

“We look forward to working with the Players Association on all issues involving the health and safety of our players,” said Joe Lockhart, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications.

Any change to the drug policy would likely have to be negotiated through the next collective bargaining agreement.

"I think it’s a debated question. Some people feel strongly we should address it now," Cowboys executive Stephen Jones said to the paper last week. "I think some people feel that we’re close enough that you should wait and take care of it in one fell swoop when you sit down and bargain with the union. There’s people who would love to have an extension. I think both sides would probably love to have it.

Gray Area. I am pro herb, but I believe it would be hard to track on who is actually stoned prior or during a game, and depending on the type of strand it maybe could affect the players ability. I don't know if its ok during the season, off season I dont see issues.

So as for the vote. I am saying yes in general but not so much during the regular season...

That's the problem with weed, they will abuse it during game time.
I'm an avid weed smoker but I do think a lot of those young players will abuse it because there's really no way to test a person when they are high.
So it leaves you in that grey area, and that just leads to problems, so I say wait until they come up with a test thats accurate

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what is the downside?
Now that it's legal in many states, what is the harm?
IMO, it's certainly less addictive than percocet or vicodin

I don't think anyone competitive enough to make it to the NFL will do anything to hinder their performance on game day.

In fact, if weed helps them sleep the night before a game, light it up, fam. I would prefer them use weed over any prescription pain killer.

I also think in all fairness to the regular guy who busts his or hers ass to work 80hrs a week just to earn 100k a year cant smoke weed because if he or she gets caught they get fired. Someone who makes millions can layoff the herb smoke portion for a few weeks. They have herb ointments and other natural muscle creams to soothe pain...

I'm not currently a weed smoker but I just came here to say I want that helmet.

Yes. This should be obvious, given that an opioid epidemic is sweeping the nation and the worst thing weed will give you is a case of mad munchies.

I'd rather they abuse weed than abuse Percocet.

Not even a conversation really, IMO. Yes. The NFL should stop testing for it plain and simple. Why? Because weed does not benefit a player on the field in terms of competitive advantage, it is legal now in some states, and soon to be more states, and it's far more mild than just about every other drug they do give players.

It's asinine. Make it stop for the love of F. Don't test for it. Fixed.

Is the NFL seriously considering relaxing its marijuana rules?

On the surface, the news that the NFL has offered to collaborate with the NFLPA in its effort to study whether marijuana can be used as a pain management tools suggests that the league finally has decided to soften its stance that marijuana is addictive, unhealthy, illegal. But there’s always more going on than meets the eye.

The NFL had previously been clinging to its strong stance against marijuana, presumably due to the realities of collective bargaining. The league and the union agreed decades ago that marijuana would be prohibited for all purposes, and the league seemed to be inclined to change that only if the NFLPA would be making an equivalent concession.

But the union likely will never make a concession in this regard, because the current rules allow players who aren’t already in the program to avoid positive tests, if they’re smart. So the NFLPA wisely has been persistently couching the issue as a matter of player health and safety, forcing the league either to follow suit or risk being perceived as not caring about player health and safety.

Coincidentally (or not), the league finally has adopted the union’s perspective, on the heels of last week’s CTE study.

This hardly means that the league will make wholesale changes to its substance-abuse policy, or that the league will agree with any NFLPA findings regarding the benefits of smoking marijuana. Eventually, the league’s position could be, “We explored it, and we decided that it’s not something that will promote player health and safety.”

But that’s a problem for another day. For now, the NFL has taken the first step toward abandoning the collective bargaining façade and acknowledging that the best interests of the game compel at a minimum consideration of any and all mechanisms for promoting and enhancing the health and safety of the men who play it.

Five things you probably didn’t know about the NFL’s drug policy
JACOB FELDMAN

1. The league’s substance abuse policy predates its PED protocol. Commissioner Pete Rozelle first introduced a loose recreational drug code, focused on education, in 1971; the preseason testing structure still used today came into being as part of the ’82 CBA—and suspensions didn’t begin until ’89. Separate language for steroids didn’t appear until ’83.

2. Players outside the “intervention program”—those who’ve never had a violation—are tested just once a year. Anyone under contract is tested once between April 20 (yup: 4/20) and Aug. 9. The player is given at most a three-hour warning before being visited by a collector, who must directly witness the player providing the urine sample.

3. For every player suspended under the policy, five to 10 others anonymously enter and exit the intervention program. Not even teams are made aware of a player’s positive test until he is suspended, which only occurs after multiple violations. Team physicians, however, have that information in order to prevent cross-medication issues.

4. Marijuana is handled differently from all other substances. The discipline procedures for marijuana abusers are less strict than violations for all other drugs. Clause 1.5.2(c) states that an additional offense is allowed before suspensions are leveled in cases involving marijuana. And up until that point, fines for positive tests are less steep.

5. Hundreds of people are involved in the program. There are generally two or three clinicians per NFL team who administer treatment plans for each player in the program. Then there’s the legion of agents who help conduct 15,000-plus tests each year. Combined with the steroid program, the NFL spends about $13 million per year on its drug programs.

This is just my opinion, But I look at it like I did in Combat in the Corps. I'm not going to use anything that would Cloud my thought process, and get me or my Team-mates injured!! So I abstained from anything when I was in a "Combat situation"!
Football games are Combat! So I say NO! JMHO!

You still fail the tests with those creams, and they don't work as well. I only made it to JuCo and I am currently working between 50-70 hours a week. My body hurt more during those two football seasons than it ever has since, and only one player from my team made it to the NFL. He only lasted 3 weeks training camp. These are the biggest, strongest, fastest athletes that they make, and they're hitting each other with up to 1600 pounds of force. We think it's okay for them to pop a few Vicodin everyday for their pain, but oh no, don't smoke weed. Are you kidding me? Weed isn't made in a laboratory. Weed doesn't ever make you dependent upon it. It doesn't have addictive traits. I have gone months smoking weed and then just stopped because I didn't need it anymore. No issues.

Can an employer fire someone for testing positive for weed in a state where it's legal? Or where its prescribed by a doctor? Honest question here

If the state is a right-to-work state, I believe they can fire someone for anything not covered by anti-discrimination laws.

How is a company's owner's political affiliation relevant? If a company operates in right-to-work states, no matter who owns them, they can do whatever they please with regards to terminating employment.

Not sure if that's saying the same thing. At will employee's for sure can be fired without cause, but that doesnt mean there isnt repercussions for the business.
Also, if prescribed by a physician, not sure how it could be banned either.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but what is the downside?
Now that it's legal in many states, what is the harm?
IMO, it's certainly less addictive than percocet or vicodin

Yeah, and it certainly does not enhance performance like PED's. If it can help with pain management during their down time, its a lot better than addictive opiates.
