Philip Rivers earns first coaching win with St. Michael Catholic High

Longtime Chargers standout, Philip Rivers, who retired last season after one year with the Colts, collected his first win as head coach of the St. Michael Catholic High (Alabama) football team on Thursday night.

Less than a year from taking his final NFL snap, Philip Rivers is back to winning on the football field.

Rivers, an eight-time Pro Bowl quarterback with the Chargers who retired last season after one year with the Colts, collected his first win as head coach of the St. Michael Catholic High (Alabama) football team on Thursday night.

The Cardinals thumped McIntosh, 49-0, to bestow Rivers with his first victory in his first game as head coach.

"It's awesome," Rivers told the Alabama Media Group's Ben Thomas following the victory. "I'm enjoying the heck out of it."

According to Maxpreps.com, it was just the sixth varsity football win for St. Michael, which opened in 2016 and in three previous seasons went a combined 5-25.
Rivers, who's fifth all time in career passing yards, recently garnered notice with musings of a potential comeback to the NFL following the high school season.
For now, though, the high school campaign is just getting going and the Cardinals are off to a promising start. They'll face Jackson at home on Thursday looking to give Rivers a 2-0 start.

He talked endless smack when he was a player, reportedly without cursing, which I find amazing.
Anyway, never heard anything bad about Rivers from ex teammates, coaches or the infamous “sources close to”.
Players tend to enjoy fun, smack talkers.
I think players would love him.

Off the top-of-my-head, I can not think of one.

Mike Vrabel maybe. But, not exactly the mega millions earned by some these days... his career ended in 2010. So, his net worth is "only" $11MM.

Absolutely.

Vrabel had a good career and probably did well financially for the time he played. However, I was thinking a QB that made over $100M playing, and may have made a ton of money in endorsements. I just don't see someone like Phillip Rivers (or Brees, or the Mannings) taking-on the job of Kevin O'Connell or Zac Taylor.

Even non-QBs that have made huge sums of $ in their careers. For instance, I don't see Andrew Whitworth becoming a full-time NFL OL-coach. Maybe, post-retirement, he's in Camp helping-out and working with young players but that's not a full-time-gig.

Front Office is a little different. A full-time senior front office role is time-consuming but allows the flexibility of say the CEO of a large corporation. Elway did it; and I could see Peyton Manning doing it.

I remember fondly Dan Marino being named the Senior VP of Football Operations by the Dolphins a few years after he retired. I think he lasted two weeks. When he resigned, Marino said something really dumb like
'I didn't realize you had to work that hard every day'. And that was a top Front Office gig!

Good point. Though it does sound like a school that costs big money. The kind I never was willing to put my kids in.

But in some states, catholic and private schools run high school football....maybe they give scholarships to the athletes idk, and it probably allows them to recruit kids outside of the public school district.

Ramsey when to a private school, and as a guest on Talib's podcast, he said private schools have the best football teams in Tennessee. Talib said some areas of Texas are the same way.

Just wonder how many transfers came in after he was named coach?
If he did this with basically the same team, then kudos.

It's like that on the bay area too. De La Salle swears they don't recruit, but they'll show up to your football games and offer your best players scholarships. Apparently that's not recruiting, but it definitely makes having a good football team in that area really difficult.

He’s already expressed his huge desire to be a HS coach post nfl career. Wouldn’t expect him to move to the nfl at least not anytime soon
