J’Marcus Webb ends his world tour by signing with Chiefs
Posted by Darin Gantt on May 19, 2014

For a guy with a resume that isn’t exactly sterling, J’Marcus Webb drew considerable interest.

Now, according to SiriusXM NFL Radio, Webb has decided to sign with the Chiefs today.

The veteran tackle worked out for the Vikings and Panthers last week, after visiting the Chiefs in March.

The Chiefs have plenty of holes up front, after losing Branden Albert, Geoff Schwartz and Jon Asamoah in free agency.

Signing Webb doesn’t necessarily fill in those blanks, but the guy does have 45 NFL starts, and at least provides some swing tackle insurance.

An ex-Rams sighting.......

Browns sign Larry Grant

The big ticket free agents signed contracts long ago, leaving teams to pick over a small list of leftovers if they want some veteran help at this point in the offseason.

The Browns did that and found something they liked in linebacker Larry Grant. The team announced Wednesday that they have signed Grant after he tried out for the team at last weekend’s rookie minicamp.

Grant played two games for the Bears last season after opening the year serving a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing drug policy. Before that, he spent two years with the 49ers and three years with the Rams, playing in every game from 2009-2012 as a backup inside linebacker and special teams regular for the two NFC West clubs.

He’ll try to earn the same role for the Browns, who signed Karlos Dansby as a free agent and added Christian Kirksey to the position group in the draft.

Giants release Josh Freeman

Josh Freeman is back on the unemployment line.

The Giants signed Freeman a little more than a month ago to join the mix of candidates for the backup quarterback job next season, but his stay came to an end on Friday. The Giants announced that they have released Freeman well ahead of the end of spring work.

The decision to part ways with Freeman may have something to do with Eli Manning’s return to the field at OTAs this week. There was some question about when Manning would be ready to go after ankle surgery, leading the Giants to bolster the depth chart with Freeman and Rusty Smith. Both have been released now, though, and second-year player Ryan Nassib looks like the best bet for the No. 2 job come September.

Getting dropped now is something of a double-edged sword for Freeman. On the one hand, he’s now been on three teams less than a year after he was bidding to become Tampa’s long-term answer at quarterback but, on the other, he’s got some time to find a new home before camp. The former impacts the latter, though, and Freeman’s career trajectory continues to move in the wrong direction.

The Giants also announced that they have claimed offensive lineman Rogers Gaines off waivers from the Bears.

After watching Freeman during 2010, I would never have guessed he'd end up tanking.

Difficulty picking up the offense continues to plague Josh Freeman

Josh Freeman was released on Friday after just six weeks with the Giants, and his biggest problem in New York this offseason appears to be the same as his biggest problem in Minnesota last season: He struggles to learn the offense.

Shortly before Freeman was released, Jordan Raanan of NJ.com reported that Freeman had been pulled from a practice session in place of fellow backup quarterback Curtis Painter after Freeman lined up the offense incorrectly.

At the end of the 2013 season, USA Today reported that Freeman was late for numerous meetings and often among the last players to the facility. Said one unnamed Viking, “You could tell Josh did not know the offense.”

In fairness to Freeman, the Vikings threw him into the starting lineup less than two weeks after he arrived, while the Giants gave him less than two months of the offseason. He has not had much time to learn the offense in either of his last two stops. And Freeman is only 26 years old, and showed promise in Tampa Bay, topping 4,000 yards in 2012 and throwing 25 touchdowns and only six interceptions in 2010. He has the tools to be a good quarterback.

But it will take some work for Freeman to get there, and after washing out in two different stops, there is now a real question whether any team will give him another shot.

June 1 could result in mini-surge in free agency
Posted by Mike Florio on June 1, 2014

AP

Before 2006, every June 1 created a second wave of free agency, via salary-cap rules that allowed teams to spread the salary-cap hit for cutting a veteran over two league years. It was, at the time, a pretty big deal. After 2006, teams acquired the ability to cut players before June 1 with a June 1 designation, which pretty much destroyed post-June 1 free agency.

But fear not, NFL fans heading into the slowest news month of the year (unless someone gets accused of murder like last June). After 20 years under the current free-agency system, more and more teams are figuring out the value of waiting until after June 1 to pursue certain free agents.

For veteran free agents who became available on March 11, signing them after June 1 results in no impact on the formula used for determining compensatory draft picks the following year. That applies to both the players’ former team and his new team. The acquisitions don’t count as players lost by the former team, and they don’t count as players gained by the new team.

Last year, the Ravens worked the system to perfection, signing veteran Jaguars linebacker Daryl Smith after June 1. He started 16 games last year.

This year, any players who became free agents on March 11 by the expiration of their prior contract fall into that same category. Some of the available names include defensive tackle Kevin Williams, defensive back Terrell Thomas, running back Ronnie Brown, tight end Jermichael Finley, and tackle Eric Winston.

Don’t be shocked if the Ravens, who still don’t have a clear plan at right tackle, give Winston a look-see.

Also, don’t be shocked if the long-awaited reunion between Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and quarterback Rex Grossman finally happens. Grossman knows Shanahan’s system as well as anyone, and he can help teach it to Johnny Manziel/Football/Cleveland/Vegas/Whatever.

For players whose contracts were terminated (like receiver Santonio Holmes), the compensatory-pick formula won’t be an issue after June 1 because it never was an issue. The compensatory draft picks are determined only by gains and losses via veteran free agency.

So now you know your new thing for the day. And since there’s a chance you’ll forget it by next year at this time, it’s already on our list of things to write about on June 1, 2015. And it will be the top story that day.

Unless someone gets accused of murder like last June.

Giants waive Will Hill after latest suspension

The Giants apparently didn’t buy Will Hill’s story about second-hand smoke either.

The team announced today they had waived the talented but troubled safety.

Hill had been suspended another six games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, after a 2012 violation of the same policy, and a 2013 suspension for violating the PED policy.

That was plenty of evidence for them to part ways with a player who has excelled on the field, but hasn’t been able to keep himself on it enough to justify the embarrassment.

Can we ink this guy to a futures contract? Hill has been outstanding when he's not suspended or injured.

Please no. He was suspended in 2012, 2013, and now for six games this season. The man either has the worst luck, the league office is out to get him, or he's clueless.

Rams should sign both Hill and Ed Reed.

Yes both are big ? Marks yet they're better than every rams S on the roster.

We're trying to win the west...worth the gamble imo

Will Hill is definitely the best player on the All-Unemployed team. Too bad he's got to be the biggest idiot on the planet. Wouldn't mind bringing him in if there's no risk, give us a good player for the last 10 games if he's willing to change. Worst case scenario, we cut him for nothing. Best case scenario, he plays at the high level we know he can. But, we would have to be willing to cut him immediately. He can't get any more chances.

Ed Reed? I dunno. He's ancient. Don't know if he can still play. But his football knowledge is unbelievable. If nothing else, getting him to work with our players would be great. Not that he has any incentive to.

Players with character issues have worked out here before in large part because of the connection that our coach develops. Players don't want to let Jeff Fisher down.

Besides, it's not like Hill is going to get any guaranteed money from anybody. He's been one of the better free safeties in the league when healthy. Certainly worth a dice roll, IMO.

Sign him and he's immediately the best safety on our team. Worst case scenario he's off the team and the only thing he cost was a roster spot of the 52nd man on the roster.

Perhaps Janoris Jenkins, who outside of the late night in San Francisco in his rookie season has been a solid character guy, can knock some sense into his buddy from Florida.

Ten best free agents available
By Gregg Rosenthal/Around The League Editor

June 1 used to be a big date in the NFL. For salary cap reasons, teams would often hold on to costly veterans until June 1 before cutting them and spreading out a cap hit over two years. That's no longer necessary.

There will be no secondary wave of free agency created this week, but the date still holds some meaning. Teams can sign players without having it affect their compensatory picks; that's why New Orleans waited until Monday to pick up center Jonathan Goodwin.

The start of June got us thinking, however, about what notable players still remain available on the free-agent market. Here are 10 notable players still available:

1. Jermichael Finley, tight end: He would have been a top-five player on our Top 101 free agents list back in February if he was fully healthy. There simply isn't another young, above-average starter still on the market.

Finley's injury, however, is career-threatening. Finley's doctor has medically cleared him to play, but it appears that teams don't agree. At least not yet. The Seahawks have ruled out signing Finley. He recently worked out for the Patriots, but there's a chance that the tight end will be forced to accept an insurance settlement that ends his career. If he's cleared to play again, he could make a difference in a playoff push. He stands apart on this list.

2. Kevin Williams, defensive tackle: Like Richard Seymour a year ago, Williams might not be eager to take a huge pay cut in order to be a part-time player. The six-time Pro Bowl player could still help a team as a rotation player. It wouldn't be a shock if Williams signed after training camps were underway.

3. Santonio Holmes, wide receiver:The talent should still be there at age 30. Motivation is a big reason why teams have not called Holmes up this offseason. Word travels fast around the NFL.

4. Asante Samuel, cornerback: He's past his prime as a cornerback, but Samuel still gave league-average snaps in coverage last year. That should be worth a roster spot somewhere.

5. Dustin Keller, tight end: He's the poor man's Finley in this market. He has big injury risk coming off torn knee ligaments, but he doesn't have quite as much upside as Finley.

6. Travelle Wharton, guard: He was re-born in Carolina as a quality starter. All signs point to him retiring despite job offers out there.

7. James Harrison, linebacker: The one-time Defensive Player of the Year is looking for work as a role player. He fit in as a run-stopper last year in Cincinnati.

8. Paris Lenon, linebacker: He was one of our favorite stories from Super Bowl week last year, the ultimate journeyman who wound up starting the big game. He should still be able to handle a team.

9. Josh Freeman, quarterback: How has he fallen so far, so fast? The Giants chose to keep Curtis Painter over him. Freeman's career seemingly can't end here, and we haven't given up hope on a successful reboot elsewhere.

10. Ed Reed, safety: It's not a good sign when Rex Ryan doesn't particularly want him back. Reed's Hall of Fame career might just fade away from lack of interest.
