AARON DONALD JUST BROKE J.J. WATT’S ALL-TIME GRADE RECORD, AND SHOULD BE DPOY

Aaron Donald just broke the highest all-time grade recorded by J.J. Watt, and deserves to win the Defensive Player of the Year award over him.

SAM MONSON | 3 HOURS AGO

I wrote earlier in the season that Aaron Donald was matching and in some ways surpassing the career arc of J.J. Watt, and that I fully expected him to fall off that incredible pace as the season wore on.

Donald did have a brief dip over the year, but picked back up towards season’s end and finished it as strongly as he began with his best game of the season in St. Louis’ overtime loss to San Francisco.

The result? The best season we’ve ever graded, even surpassing some historic seasons from Watt.

That’s why Aaron Donald should be the Defensive Player of the Year.

He ends the season with a perfect 99.9 rating in PFF’s new rating system, and the highest grade we have ever given over a single season. Watt’s 2015 stands as a higher-graded 16-game body of work than any season we have seen from Watt, who held the previous best marks.

Watt may have had a statistically better season than Donald in some areas, but he has also played on the edge far more than Donald has (63.2 percent of his snaps this season, compared with three snaps from Donald lining up outside the tackle). Rushing from the outside leads to more pressure, sacks and statistics, and yet Watt has just nine pressures more than Donald over the season.

Donald leads all “true” interior players in both total pressures and defensive stops, and has played the run as well as anybody in football. His run-stop percentage (10.9 percent) ranks fifth in the NFL among defensive tackles, with three of the four players above him run-stuffing specialists at nose tackle.

Watt had a fantastic game against the Jaguars, and was talked up as a lock for the Defensive Player of the Year award as a result, but it would be a mistake to dismiss Donald’s display just because it came later in a game few people cared about.

Donald may not have had a sack in the game, but he did record eight total pressures and a batted pass, and was consistently disruptive as a run defender. The batted pass ended up as an interception for a fellow defensive lineman, and ultimately put points on the board for the Rams.

Before this season it looked like Watt was playing at a level nobody else in the game could come close to, and as a generational talent, it could be years or decades before we saw anybody approach his dominance. As it happens, Donald has come along just a couple of years later and not just risen to meet Watt on his elevated plateau of play, but actually edged past him.

It took a couple of years before people were inclined to give Watt the credit he deserves as one of the most unstoppable forces the game has ever seen. We all universally accept now that we are witnessing one of the game’s greatest ever in action, but that doesn’t mean we should just hand him every award by default.

Donald hasn’t been doing it for as long as Watt, but all of the available data suggests that he is right on track to match Watt’s dominance, and this season has actually surpassed anything Watt has achieved over a single season in PFF grading.

Watt now has the recognition, but Aaron Donald has been the best defensive player in football this season.

But he won't. Because he's a Ram, and Watt is in the playoffs.

STL-SF GRADES: DONALD’S PERFORMANCE EARNS ALL-TIME GRADE IN LOSS
The top takeaways and highest-graded players from the 49ers’ 19-16 win over the Rams.

KIERNAN HOGAN | 1 HOUR AGO

Here are the top takeaways and highest-graded players from the 49ers’ 19-16 win over the Rams.

St. Louis Rams
– DT Aaron Donald (+15.4) closed out his All-Pro caliber season with one of the most dominant games in the PFF era (2007-present). Donald was in the backfield on what seemed like every single snap, and earned huge grades for both pass rushing (four hits, four hurries, and a batted pass) and run defense. While J.J. Watt, Geno Atkins, Ndamukong Suh and Kawann Short were all tremendously productive this season, Donald’s +104.0 cumulative season grade leads all NFL interior defensive linemen by nearly 30 points. Donald was the best interior lineman against both the run and the pass in 2015, just his second year in the league.

– LT Greg Robinson (+3.2) earned his first green-graded game of the season after earning a +2.5 run blocking grade and allowing just one hurry in pass protection. This was only the second game of the season in which Robinson earned a positive grade, making 2015 a disappointing season for the second overall pick of the 2014 draft. Robinson’s athleticism and power were on display at times yesterday however, especially when he was asked to pull and screen block. Robinson ranks 74th of 76 NFL tackles with a -26.6 cumulative pass blocking grade this season, and will need show drastic improvement in that area in 2016.

– QB Case Keenum (-0.6) was just 3 of 11 for 83 yards on passes thrown more than 10+ yards in this game. Keenum did not turn the ball over, but did not make many big plays either, as St. Louis was content to run a conservative offensive game plan. The 49ers blitzed just eight times in the game and finished without a sack, but were disruptive when they brought extra rushers. Keenum finished 1 of 8 for 9 yards and a -1.3 grade against the blitz and 4 of 13 for 34 yards and a -1.5 grade under pressure.

Top performers:

DT Aaron Donald (+15.4)
DE William Hayes (+6.1)
LT Greg Robinson (+3.2)
DT Michael Brockers (+2.5)
HB Benny Cunningham (+2.1)

San Francisco 49ers
– San Francisco’s rushing offense was a nonfactor in this game, as their offensive line was unable to get any movement against an excellent St. Louis front seven. All five offensive linemen and both starting tight ends for the 49ers earned red grades for run blocking, and San Francisco gained just 93 total rushing yards at 2.8 yards per carry. HB DuJuan Harris (+3.1) was the team’s leading rusher with 67 yards, and also led the team with eight catches and 86 receiving yards.

– While he was not able to crack the starting lineup this season, 2015 first-round pick DE Arik Armstead (+2.4) enjoyed a successful rookie year. Armstead earned green grades for both pass rushing and run defense this year, and his +14.0 overall grade was second only to Leonard Williams among rookie interior defensive linemen. Second-year OLB Aaron Lynch (+2.3) also had a strong season, especially as a pass rusher (14.3 Pass Rushing Productivity ranks 4th of 33 qualifying NFL 3-4 OLB’s). As they head into an uncertain offseason, the 49ers can be confident that they have building blocks in their front seven in Armstead and Lynch.

– QB Blaine Gabbert (-2.6) earned a red grade for the fourth time in his last six games, despite his production against the blitz (10 of 16 for 20 yards, 1 TD, +1.9 grade). Gabbert fumbled twice and was also intercepted, and struggled under pressure (7 of 17 for 86 yards, 1 INT, -1.1 grade). After performing well in his first two starts, Gabbert has given the 49ers little reason to believe that he is their long-term answer at the quarterback position.

Top performers:

HB DuJuan Harris (+3.2)
DE Arik Armstead (+2.4)
WR Quinton Patton (+2.4)
OLB Aaron Lynch (+2.3)
CB Jimmy Ward (+1.5)

BEST PLAYERS AT EVERY POSITION IN WEEK 17
Alfred Blue, Sam Bradford, and Khalil Mack highlight our list of the best individual performers of Week 17.

KHALED ELSAYED | 1 HOUR AGO

There were some big box score performances on Sunday, as the yards flowed for quarterbacks and the sacks flowed for pass rushers in the final week of the regular season. But going beyond that, who would the tape determine worthy of a place on the PFF Team of the Week roster?

Let’s find out.

Quarterback: Sam Bradford, Eagles (+4.6)

Bradford saving his highest game grade of the season for the game after Chip Kelly is fired? Conspiracy! Actually, it’s more the culmination of a generally steady improvement for the QB over the second half of the year, and an accurate performance against the Giants.

Running back: Alfred Blue, Texans (+2.4)

Blue recorded less yardage than Rashad Jennings, but as many forced missed tackles and fewer mistakes in the passing game.

Fullback: Mike Tolbert, Panthers (+1.3)

This wasn’t a great week for lead blockers, with none scoring a blocking score above +1.0. Tolbert, at least, graded positively in every phase of the game.

Tight end: Zach Ertz, Eagles (+4.9)

Some good blocking for Ertz, but let’s not fool ourselves into thinking this is anything other than the result of a monster 152-yard day.

Wide receivers: Terrance Williams, Cowboys (+3.3) and Calvin Johnson, Lions (+5.0)

No room for Julio Jones or Antonio Brown, despite big efforts, and that’s because Johnson and Williams had even bigger showings of their own. Williams stood out even more so for his big day, which might bode well for his role in 2016.

Tackles: Joe Thomas, Browns (+4.2) and Demar Dotson, Buccaneers (+3.9)

It’s been another tremendous year for Thomas, with the only shame being that he plays a position—and for a team—where that brilliance isn’t given the attention its due. Dotson has missed most of 2015, but came back late in the year, and after a slow start, really kicked it up a gear.

Guards: Jeff Allen, Chiefs (+4.8) and Marshal Yanda, Ravens (+4.6)

Allen rounds off a nice regular season with his best run blocking effort of the year to score the highest mark of any left guard. As for Yanda, he just did what he’s been doing all season long, with another virtuoso performance.

Center: Matt Paradis, Broncos (+5.1)

Jason Kelce almost stole this spot with his superior pass protection, but we like our centers to block big in the run game, and Paradis was a monster in this regard. Where did that come from?

Each week, we put forward a hybrid defense that features two edge rushers (4-3 defensive ends or 3-4 outside linebackers), three players on the “interior” of the defensive line (3-4 defensive ends or defensive tackles), and two linebackers (all inside linebackers and 4-3 outside linebackers).

Defensive interior – ends: Aaron Donald, Rams (+15.4) and J.J. Watt, Texans (+7.3)

Watt had the eye-catching performance, but Donald had the highest grade of the week. In truth, both played excellently, but the stats just don’t quantify the impact the excellent Donald had against the 49ers.

Defensive interior – nose: Damon Harrison, Jets (+6.3)

If this is to be Harrison’s last game as a Jet, what a way to go out. He was destructive against the run, with a crazy seven defensive stops.

Edge rushers: Khalil Mack, Raiders (+8.3) and Brandon Graham, Eagles (+7.6)

Mack made his final case for defensive player of the year with another big effort that featured six quarterback disruptions and his usual excellence against the run. As for Graham, he just worked Ereck Flowers over, making him look every bit the rookie he is.

Linebackers: Vontaze Burfict, Bengals (+4.8) and Anthony Barr, Vikings (+4.1)

Watch out playoffs, the Bengals’ Burfict looks healthy and has worked the rust off. He ended the season playing extremely well, with his all-action effort against the Ravens the best of the lot. Barr has been a revelation in his sophomore season, and had another big day against the Packers.

Cornerbacks: Xavier Rhodes, Vikings (+4.2) and Bradley Roby, Broncos (+2.9)

Rhodes had a big-time pick, one pass breakup, and allowed just 38 yards into his coverage, as he made life hard for the Packers’ receivers. As for Roby he was in close coverage all day, allowing just 21 yards into his coverage, despite being thrown at eight times.

Safeties: Da’Norris Searcy, Titans (+2.3) and Earl Thomas, Seahawks (+2.1)

It was a quiet week for safeties, but we’ve got two guys who made two big plays, with a pick apiece.

Kicker: Adam Vinatieri, Colts

Another “perfect on the day” for Vinatieri.

Punter: Tress Way, Redskins

Good distance, good location, good job.

Returner: Tyler Lockett, Seahawks

Lockett is just a nightmare to deal with on punt returns.

Tip of the cap to GRob too! The whole o line looked good in pass pro yesterday. Keenum had more time than we've seen all season for a Rams QB.

This gives me hope for next season. Those words have been uttered before by Rams fans before but one day those hopes will become more tangible.

I think he will get DPOY.
He should, but the voters are whores for the sexy stats and Watt has more of them, I believe, only because of where he lines up. If they are truly fans of the game, they will look harder and see that AD deserves it without a doubt.

What is most impressive is Donald's an interior DL. He is a rare, Hall of Fame level talent (obviously barring injury) who we should be taking the time to enjoy as much as we can right now.

Really hope he wins but even if not the guys around the NFL know and this guy has a long career full of accolades ahead of him.
