As we discuss other teams looking closely at our DC, and I ponder the exodus of good coordinators that have used McVay's tree as a launching pad, it brings up a problem I've had with the system.

Why are HCs paid so much more than valuable coordinators?

They should be paid more, no doubt, but the multiplier is what gets me. And it paves the way for coordinators to leave a good situation and chase the money. I'm not blaming them, I'm blaming the system.

Reminder: THERE IS NO SALARY CAP ON COACHES!

If the Rams have a DC, for example, that works really well with the HC, why wouldn't you do everything you can to eliminate $$$ from his decision? There is no guarantee for success leaving for a HC gig. Paying them well could keep them in a great gig for a LONG TIME.

Even under today's messed up compensation model, it may not be the right move. Just look at the extremes from McVay's tree, from Green Bay from Cincy.

/end rant

I'd like to keep Staley. The thought of having to find a new DC and all the players having to learn and adjust to the new coordinators system after just one year sucks man. If Staleys D is this good after just 9 games just imagine what it would be like after 2 or 3 years with players drafted specifically for his scheme on top of the players who are already here and will have 2-3 years in this defense.

Picking up Fangio like some here have mentioned wouldnt be as bad since he was Staleys mentor and theyre similar. When Mcvay found Staley he was looking for someone young and that game plans week to week so i don't know if Fangio would fit the criteria assuming its the same as before.

Just my 2 cents.

If I had Kroenke's money, I would.

Also, while I appreciate McVay's willingness to grow his own coaching tree and let guys go out and realize their dreams... I kinda see the merit of Belichick's unwillingness to allow his coordinators or staff to talk during playoff runs all, but ensuring that they'd stay as teams jump on the "best available guy".

I can only imagine how good we'd be if Matt LaFleur were still our OC...

Money isnt going to keep a guy from taking a head coaching gig. These guys get their shot they take it.

We just have to hope that someone in house is taking serious fucking notes from Staley. If we can't keep him, maybe we can find someone to run this system next year.
It won't be the same, but rebuilding our defense under another new DC will screw us up severely imo.

We need to find a DC without any charisma and poor interviewing skills hahaha

Im hoping a raise and the idea of being a bit green as a head coach could persuade Staley to stay with the Rams at least another year.

I 100% disagree. There are those with a gi-normous ego where this rule would apply, but the bulk of coaches want to rise the HC for the money.

I deal with the same thing on the IT side. I have quite a few programming/network specialists that make almost as much as CIOs and they have no interest of running the whole show...

Well, running IT and Football are 2 totally different things. And a football coach is a football coach. I dont think there is a position coach out there who wouldnt take a pay cut to be a head coach. You think Sean McVay would have stayed in Washington if they paid him 2 mill per year? Not a chance

I dunno about head coaches but, as a mid level mental health therapist, the only reason I'm going through all the stress of becoming a fully licensed therapist is the pay bump lmao. I even asked my supervisor if I should get my doctorate and her response was "why? There's no pay bump " lol
