Pat Kirwan got a chance to sit and talk with Phil Savage about the Senior Bowl, its role in the draft process, and even got his take on the biggest story line of this game, North Dakota State QB Carson Wentz.

Senior Bowl Grows in Stature

I’ve been going to the Senior Bowl practices each of the last 26 years, and the event has been completely transformed. What used to be a small event for NFL scouts, has become a huge event that draws nearly every NFL coach, scout, and GM, as well as over 100 top draft eligible football players.

That’s thanks in large part to the efforts of Phil Savage, a former personnel executive with the Browns and the Ravens, who was hired in June of 2012 to take over the operations of the game. Since then, the game and the practices have been must see televised events on NFL Network and ESPN, and media members from all over the country come to interview players. Practice schedules give personnel people a chance to not only see every practice for both teams, but create time for interviews, which can be critical to the evaluation process.

Phil has created a film room where coaches, scouts, and players can watch practice film during the week, and he added a weigh-in event where scouts can watch the measurables being taken and get a live look at the frame and body type the player is carrying, another important piece of information. Phil is also a native of the Mobile area and has added a Friday component where the players visit local hospitals and schools. Oh yeah, and the game on Saturday – a complete sell out every year.
