I am not a computer guru but I have read that the best way to do it is as follows:

Save all your files on a back-up drive and reset your computer to default (if it has that option) or reformat the hard drive. And then re-install your programs.

There are other ways and other programs but the above is the best way from what I read - it sucks that you have to do that though from time to time because Windows has a bug that every time you do something, a tiny portion saves in the memory permanently (forget which one) and it just adds up over time.

Maybe some computer gurus on here know programs that will free up the memory.

Also you might open up your computer and clean out all the fuzz. I use that thing that shoots a condensed spray of air. Some kids used that spray to get a high and killed themselves a few years back.

Best Buy Geek Squad. I've had mine done a couple times. IDK how much it costs though. I had it free because I was in this yearly membership thing that gave discounts on installs, free deliveries, and tech help.

Hey Nighttrain when you say "freeze" do you mean it if locks up and you have to restart? Or, when you are in your browser it locks up and you have to close the browser window?

Also, what version of Windows are you using? What browser do you use? It could be a number of things but these will help to start focusing and eliminating potential issues.

If you're not sure on the windows version, right click on your windows icon and go to system. Most Windows version this is the process to do this to grab your PC"s info.

Itll be under Windows Specs.

Delete all your porn first off.

Secondly you can defragment your drive space. PC freezes are due to maximum overusage from harddrive space or even RAM. Background tasks ie. processes can be the culprit the less you are running the better.

This is a cheaper solution it can and may be permanent, but depending how you use your PC you will need to upgrade the internal components eventually.

if it freezes put it in the oven ( or on the grill)

if it overheats put it in the fridge

I had to put my modem back in 2000 into the freezer to cool it down when I was playing Everquest because it would overheat.

it bothers me that with the advent of flat screens I can’t really smack the side of the monitor. That was always my go to I.T. move.

Well I have to say that the other day one of our restaurant dishwashers wouldn't turn on. After repeated attempts at diagnosing, I turned and kicked it. It started working and hasn't stopped since. Some times things just need a good ass kicking.

BTW... Flat screens can use a good head slap from time to time.

My old boss called that "percussive maintenance". I always preferred the term "high impact troubleshooting".

Not sure about a PC tune up but thanks to the advice I got in this thread (link follows), I'm still rocking with my 2nd hand laptop I got for under $150.
