On night of injuries, Bradford re-injures knee in win over Browns

CLEVELAND • En route to a 33-14 victory over the Browns. there were big catches by Kenny Britt and Brian Quick. Long runs by Chris Givens (after a catch) and Benny Cunningham. On defense Alec Ogletree had an interception. Rookie Aaron Donald started the second half with a sack fumble deep in Cleveland territory that led to a score.

But for every big play the Rams produced Saturday at FirstEnergy Stadium, they suffered an injury. Seemingly returning to better health, 20 of the Rams' 22 projected opening-day starters were in the lineup.

But before halftime, five of those starters were out with injury _ two with knee injuries, and three with ankles. And of course, the one injury the Rams absolutely, positively couldn't afford: an injury to quarterback Sam Bradford's left knee.

The on-site examination by Rams medical officials proved inconclusive. Bradford will undergo further tests Sunday in St. Louis to see if he has re-injured the anterior cruciate that was torn last October at Carolina.

Bradford went down on second-and-7 from the Cleveland 12 on the opening drive of the night, holding his left knee once he landed. He had been hit by Browns defensive end Amonty Bryant _ who got around left tackle Jake Long _ after releasing an incomplete pass to tight end Jared Cook. Bradford's left knee buckled as he braced himself after the Bryant hit.

It was Long's first game of the preseason; he's coming back from offseason knee injury of his own and looked a little rusty early.

Earlier in the drive, Bradford had completed a pass of 21 yards on third-and-7 to Cook that was wiped out by a penalty. After the penalty yardage was assessed, he connected with Quick for 13 yards and a first down that counted. Then came a 36-yard deep ball to Britt to the Cleveland 15.

But none of that mattered, obviously, when Bradford went down after the Bryant hit. After a couple of minutes on the turf, Bradford got up with some help by the team medical staff. No cart was needed.

After a couple more minutes on the sideline, Bradford then walked off the field into the tunnel to the visitors' locker room, walking with a slight limp.

The absence of a cart, and Bradford walking under his own power perhaps be seen as good signs. But it probably will take an MRI Sunday to really find out what's going on with the knee.

Obviously, trying to get through an entire season without Bradford, who has looked good in training camp and in exhibition play, would make the Rams' hopes for a breakout season next to impossible.

And if only the injuries had stopped with Bradford's. On the Rams' first defensive series of the night, defensive tackle Kendall Langford went down with a right ankle injury. Langford got the ankle re-taped and went in for another series, but then was taken out for good _ a precautionary measure, according to the team.

On the first play of the Rams' second offensive series, left guard Rodger Saffold went down with a right ankle injury. He was done for the night, again a precautionary measure according to the team.

Then, with 5 1/2 minutes to play in the second quarter, cornerback Trumaine Johnson and defensive tackle Michael Brockers were injured on the same play. For Brockers, just coming back from an ankle injury, it was another ankle injury _ the severity of which was unknown.

Johnson suffered a knee injury on the play _ a knee injury that looked serious and could be season ending. Johnson left on a cart and had a towel over his face as he left.

The Rams' third corner, Brandon McGee, didn't dress Saturday. He has been slowed by an ankle injury this camp and preseason. Next in line are Missouri rookie E.J. Gaines, as well as Darren Woodard, Greg Reid, and Marcus Roberson.

At quarterback, Shaun Hill finished off the first drive after Bradford's injury, which ended in a 30-yard field goal by Greg Zuerlein. Hill then engineered another drive ending in a 30-yard field goal, one which included a 32-yard completion to Britt and a 21-yard run by Cunningham, who started ahead of Zac Stacy.

But Hill was done after that series, completing two of six passes before giving way to Austin Davis. Davis, playing ahead of rookie Garrett Gilbert for the first time this preseason, saw extended playing time _ all the way into the fourth quarter.

After the Ogletree interception and 27-yard return in the second quarter, the Rams took over at the Cleveland 28 with 8:13 to play in the half. The Rams overcame a false start, and a holding penalty to get their first touchdown on a 6-yard Davis-to-Quick pass for a 13-0 lead.

It was an active night for Quick, who had four receptions for 47 yards on six targets. The Rams made it four scores on five possessions a few minutes later, when Givens grabbed a short pass over the middle on crossing pattern, then turned up field and turned on the jets.

No one could catch Givens, who raced all the way to the end zone for a 75-yard TD and a 20-0 lead with 2:48 left in the half.

The Browns finally got on the board in the final minute of the second quarter, and sandwiched a couple of touchdowns around a third Zuerlein field goal. The second TD came on a 7-yard scramble by Johnny Manziel midway through the third quarter delighting the crowd at FirstEnergy.

But Davis engineered another field goal drive, giving the Rams a 26-14 lead with 11:37 to play in the fourth quarter.

Then came the moment we've all been waiting for: Rams defensive end Michael Sam sacked Johnny Football. Sam celebrated by mimicking Manziel's "Money" gesture. Talk about your ESPN moments.

Garrett Gilbert took over at quarterback after that Browns possession, and the Rams kept moving the ball, all the way down the field until Trey Watts scored on a 12-yard TD run, giving the Rams a 33-14 lead with 5:40 to play.

This was a game the Rams dominated statistically. Following Watts' TD the Rams had 452 yards of offense, compared to just 120 for Cleveland.

But given the injuries to Bradford and others, that didn't seem to matter much.

Rams win 33-14, but injuries are the story of the game

The Rams picked up their first victory of the preseason, putting together a solid start-to-finish effort in a 33-14 victory over the Browns in Cleveland Saturday night.

But the celebration was subdued as the team awaits news on the severity of apparent knee injuries to quarterback Sam Bradford and cornerback Trumaine Johnson. Bradford walked off on his own power late in the first quarter while Johnson was carted off in the second quarter with a towel over his head.

The team should know more about the injuries on Sunday.

The Rams are set to close out their preseason schedule Thursday in Miami against the Dolphins.

The Rams added to their lead early in the final quarter, getting a 26-yard field goal from Zuerlein _ his fourth kick of the game _ to make it 26-14 with 12:44 to play. The kick capped a 17-play, 82-yard drive.

With 10:50 to play, the Rams' Michael Sam sacks Johnny Manziel.

With rookie Garrett Gilbert at quarterback, the Rams moved 58 yards on just eight plays to add to their lead. One play after Gilbert rolled to his right to hit tight end Justice Cunningham for a 23-yard gain to the Cleveland 12, undrafted rookie Trey Watts showed some speed and elusiveness on a 12-yard scoring run.

Watts, from the University of Tulsa, took the ball to the right and then reversed field and picked up some nice down-field blocks to make it 33-14 with 5:40 left in the game.

Watts led all rushers in the game with 36 yards on nine carries.

RAMS LEAD 23-14 WITH A QUARTER TO PLAY

The Rams created another turnover in the opening minute of the second half and extended their lead to 23-7 with another Greg Zuerlein field goal.

On the Browns' first play from scrimmage, rookie defensive tackle Aaron Donald put a blind-side hit on Cleveland quarterback Brian Hoyer and knocked the ball loose. Rookie free agent Marcus Roberson scooped up the loose ball and returned it to the Cleveland 19.

The Rams moved to the Browns' 2 before the drive stalled. Zuerlein's 20-yarder with 11:34 to play in the third quarter stretched the lead to 23-7.

The Browns' defense has been led all night by rookie linebacker Chris Kirksey, the Hazelwood East product who went on to star at the University of Iowa. His interception and return to the St. Louis' 14 helped the home team pick up another touchdown.

Johnny Manziel took over on the drive and, after a couple of Browns' penalties, scrambled for a 7-yard touchdown run that made it 23-14 with 6:55 to play in the third quarter.

BANGED-UP RAMS UP 20-7 AT HALF

The Rams capitalized on an Alec Ogletree interception to go up 13-0 on a 6-yard scoring pass from Austin Davis to Brian Quick with 5:32 to play in the opening half. In the five-play, 28-yard drive, Davis completed clutch passes to Chris Givens and Alex Bayer on crossing routes.

Rams suffer another blow as third-year cornerback Trumaine Johnson is carted off after suffering a knee injury to his left knee.

Davis, who completed four of five passes on the earlier touchdown drive, did a great job of checking down before finding Chris Givens on short crossing pattern. And Givens did the rest, outrunning the Browns defense for a 75-yard touchdown and a 20-0 Rams lead with 2:48 to play before halftime.

Cleveland responded with a scoring drive, cutting the Rams lead to 20-7 on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Brian Hoyer to Andrew Hawkins with 37 seconds left in the first half.

It was the first touchdown drive of the preseason for Hoyer, who has been named opening-day starter for the Browns.

Some halftime numbers: Davis has completed 5 of 7 passes for 118 yards and two touchdowns. Givens has two catches for 94 yards and score while Britt has two receptions for 68 yards. Quick leads the Rams with four catches for 47 yards and a touchdown.

Hoyer has completed 10 of 16 passes for 84 yards and a touchdown.

BRADFORD HURT ON GAME'S OPENING DRIVE

Rams quarterback Sam Bradford, coming off knee surgery that ended his 2013 season, went down with an injury to the same left knee on the Rams' first drive after being hit by Cleveland's Armonty Bryant after throwing an incomplete from the Cleveland 12.

Shaun Hill took over as the 15-play drive ended with a 30-yard field goal from Greg Zuerlein.

On the drive, Bradford completed 4 of 9 passes for 77 yards, completing key passes to Brian Quick (21 yards, 13 yards) and Kenny Britt (36 yards).

Defensive lineman Kendall Langford and guard Rodger Saffold also left the field with first-quarter injuries. Langford returned to the game while Saffold, a Cleveland native, hurt his right ankle.

Early in the second quarter, Zuerlein booted another 30-yarder for a 6-0 lead.

WINLESS TEAMS SQUARE OFF IN CLEVELAND

A pair of 0-2 squads will square off tonight as the Rams take on the Browns in Cleveland in preseason action.

This will mark the 29th preseason meeting between the two squads, with the Rams holding a 14-13-1 edge. However, the Browns have won four of the last five meetings, including a 27-19 Cleveland win over the visiting Rams in the 2013 preseason opener for both squads.

It is the first road game of the preaseson for the Rams and the first home game of the preseason for the Browns.

The Rams, in all blue uniforms, are without a number of key players, including linebackers James Laurinaitis and Jo-Lonn Dunbar and defensive end Sammy Brown. Others sitting out are receiver Jordan Harris, cornerback Brandon McGee, defensive lineman Matt Conrath, defensive end William Hayes and center/guards Demetrius Rhaney and Barrett Jones.

The Browns' Pierre Desir, a cornerback from Francis Howell Central High and Lindenwood University is out with a knee injury. Desir was selected in the fourth round in last May's draft.

Cleveland's 2014 rookie class also includes fullback Ray Agnew (De Smet/SIU) and linebacker Chris Kirksey (Hazelwood East/Iowa). r

At linebacker, the Rams will start second-year pro and special teams standout Daren Bates, free agent Etienne Sabino and rookie free agent Aaron Hill, the Lutheran-St. Charles High product.

The Rams' starting offensive line will feature Jake Long and Rodger Saffold for the first time. Long will play alongside Saffold on the left side, with Davin Joseph at right guard.

That means Greg Robinson, the No. 2 overall pick last May, starts on the bench. The Rams want Robinson to watch and re-focus a bit. He's shifted between guard and tackle thus far but is expected to focus on playing left guard from here on out.

The Browns are starting Brian Hoyer, but Johnny Manziel should also see plenty of snaps in his home debut.
