I'd think Gurley will be the short yardage guy once he is healthy, but considering Mason and Cunningham are both more "dynamic home run hitter" type guys, I dunno if either is a fit in a short yardage role.

Yep. Once healthy; my guess is Gurley does the lions share of short yardage.

It was very difficult to see the lines today because of the distance and the lift being in the way.

My impression from today:

Good:

O line did much better from what I could see. They held pockets for Foles and in the one on ones held their own far better than without pads, just as Coach said they would. Our Rookie starters look like vet starters, good ones.

The D line. Forget about it.

Bailey - He's got the best hands on the team and is running nice routes.
Quick - As good as last season.
Britt - Dude can play.
Mason - He's catching everything and finding holes in run plays.
Blake - caught many passes for big gains with the twos.
Cook - He's Foles favorite red zone target and seam target.

OK:

Foles - Not a good day for Foles. Interceptions, missed throws, holding the ball. Still, he did connect on a lot of passes too and moved the ball.
Mannion - Not a lot of snaps today and he did well but was intercepted twice.
Austin - He hasn't improved from last season which is fine. He's catching well and making plays.
Keenum - A good day.
Pead - Not bad. A couple of nice runs and a pass or two.

Bad:

Kendricks - dropped more than he caught.
Davis - He's a camp arm.
Cunningham - No yards gained that I saw in limited tries.

Rams camp recap: Monday, August 4th
by Michael Condon 8m ago

The St. Louis Rams continued their 2015 training camp today, day 4, by strapping on the pads for the first time. There were some positives and negatives to take away from practice today, but overall, the team looked good in some areas of concern.

We’ll start with the center position, where Tim Barnes started with the first team reps today. It would appear head coach Jeff Fisher is back to the top of the rotation that includes Demetrius Rhaney and Barrett Jones. Barnes looked good on the day, including making some nice plays downfield in the screen game.

Nick Foles looked sharp and took all the first team reps. In a bit of a surprise, Case Keenum was the starting quarterback with the second string players for most of the day. Toward the end of the day, Austin Davis stepped in with the second team, including during redzone drills. Rookie Sean Mannion took a few reps during warmups and looked sharp with a handful of accurate passes and a strong arm. It would appear Mannion is settling in nicely, but isn’t going to compete for the back up spot with Davis and Keenum.

The wide receiver group had an up and down day. Tavon Austin, wearing #1 for camp, was involved in the offense quite a bit. It would appear that offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti Jr. is going to be true to his word and find more ways to get Austin involved in the offense. Stedman Bailey took quite a few reps with the first team offense as well. Usually lined up in the slot, Bailey opened things up with a diving catch along the sideline on an errant pass form Foles that really got the crowd involved. Brian Quick caught a few balls, but also dropped a few. Chris Givens took his reps with the second team and Keenum.

The offensive line, anchored by Barnes in the middle, consisted of Greg Robinson at LT, Rodger Saffold at LG, Jamon Brown at RG and Rob Havenstein at RT. As a group the line did well protecting Foles from the dangerous front four of this Rams defense. Fourth round selection Andrew Donnal took reps with the second team.

The running back position was almost exclusively Tre Mason. Mason took all the reps with the first team unit, as expected. However, Todd Gurley was in pads and completing individual drills away from practice. Gurley was participating in 10-15 yard sprints with hard stops. He didn’t complete an cuts or jumps, but was putting some pressure on the knee with his stops. The team will continue to take things slow with Gurley, as expected. Mason looked very good though.

The secondary was highlighted with Janoris Jenkins and his usual antics. Jenkins looked good all day and Foles didn’t have too many opportunities to throw his way. Unfortunately, there are reports that the Rams second corner, E.J. Gaines, will be out a little longer than expected. Gaines had his knee stepped on in practice earlier in camp and spent the day today undergoing further testing.

That injury opened the door for Trumaine Johnson to fill in with the first team today. Johnson was very shaky in his new spot and let Austin and tight end Jared Cook get free multiple times including a deep ball to Cook in the corner of the end zone that resulted in a touchdown.

Cook had a solid day in the passing game. Cook was very involved in the first team offense and he and Foles seem to have built up quite a rhythm early on. Lance Kendricks was also on the receiving end of a few nice passes from Foles. However, there was a steep drop off after that. Cory Harkey, Brad Smelley and Alex Bayer all dropped touchdown passes on consecutive reps. None saw much action after that. Punt return duties were handled solely by Austin, and kick returns were fielded by Ben Cunningham and Isaiah Pead.

St. Louis also made one roster move today at the completion of camp. The team released WR Devon Wylie and signed CB Trovon Reed. Don’t read too much into the Reed signing. Even with Gaines out, Johnson, Marcus Roberson and LaMarcus Joyner all hold steady on the depth chart.

The Rams will return to action on Thursday at 5:30pm CST/6:30pm EST. Check back here for another day of live coverage and follow Ramblin’ Fan on Twitter for live updates!

Thanks. That is good to hear/see/read/?. I didn't see any tweets about him, but I read a few good ones about Britt. Those two with Bailey and Cook are really stepping up this offseason. I truly hope whatever it is that is plaguing Kendricks, it disappears before the regular season. I have faith in him.
Quick got some extra reps with the QBs when the team was doing some punt return drills too. He didn't have to do it, he asked to jump in while the QBs were working on ball placement on some quick inside and some spot throws.

Chris Long returns to practice, E.J. Gaines set for more tests
By Nick Wagoner

http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-ra...rns-to-practice-e-j-gaines-set-for-more-tests

EARTH CITY, Mo. -- For the St. Louis Rams, the pads came on Tuesday night and defensive end Chris Long returned after sitting the first few days with some back stiffness.

Rams coach Jeff Fisher said it was good to have Long back in the mix.

"We expected that he would be back somewhere around this time period," Fisher said. "He looked like he was OK.We'll see how he is tomorrow."

Long and the Rams have Wednesday off, so it made sense for him to get back in the fold Tuesday and then get an extra day to recover before Thursday's evening session.

This is an important season for Long as he bounces back from the foot/ankle injury he suffered in the season opener last year. While Long did return late in the season, he was never at full strength during the year.

Simply having Long around is a boon to the rest of the team, according to Fisher.

"It's not only what he does inside in the locker room and the training room and the weight room, I think the guys really look up to the things that he's done off the field. ... I think he serves as a great example for the young guys to take advantage of your opportunity to give back, so not only do they respect him for what he does on the field but also what he does off the field."

Safety Mark Barron also returned to practice Tuesday, albeit his work was mostly limited to individual drills. Still, that's a step up from the sideline work he's done in previous days.

Cornerbacks E.J. Gaines (foot) and Brandon McGee (foot) did not practice. Gaines suffered an apparent foot injury on Sunday night and will still need to undergo some tests according to the Rams.

"At this point, no (update)," Fisher said. "We're going to do some more tests. We'll probably send him down and have him see Dr. (Robert) Anderson but at this point, no."

Anderson is the noted foot/ankle specialist who worked with Long last year and has worked with a number of high-profile athletes over the years. Given Anderson's stature, it's fair to assume there's at least a little bit of concern about Gaines' injury. Fisher said McGee is "about a week away" from returning.

With Gaines and McGee out, the Rams were a little light at cornerback and made a roster move to add some depth. They released receiver Devon Wylie and signed defensive back Trovon Reed. Reed played his college ball at Auburn and spent some time with the Seattle Seahawks.

Dave Peacock, the local businessman heading the St. Louis stadium task force, took in Tuesday's practice with his two sons. Peacock spent most of the practice in the family tent area and chatted with reporters for a little bit. As you'd expect, Peacock is in good spirits after Monday's ruling that no public vote would be needed to use city bonds on the proposed new stadium. Nothing has changed in Peacock's demeanor, either, as he remains confident in the task force's efforts.

Tim Barnes took his regular turn with the first-team offense at center. He had a nice downfield block on a screen pass to running back Tre Mason early in practice.

Quarterback Nick Foles and tight end Jared Cook had a couple of nice connections as Foles hit Cook on a deep corner route early in the workout and followed by floating a perfect pass just over safety T.J. McDonald's outstretched hands for a touchdown in the shallow corner during a red zone drill.

With the pads now on, there was fun to be had in the one-on-one pass rush drills. Guard Jamon Brown held his own against tackle Michael Brockers and tackle Rob Havenstein handled a rush from end William Hayes pretty well. Guard Travis Bond and defensive tackle Nick Fairley had a brief altercation after one matchup.

Running back Todd Gurley (knee) did some full sprints on the side during the practice and looked to be moving pretty well. For now, he's still limited to that type of work as well as individual drills.

War hero/undrafted receiver Daniel Rodriguez drew some cheers for his work as the punt returners had a bit of fun catching punts. Rodriguez caught one ball behind his back then proceeded to catch more with footballs already in hand. He got up to four before dropping them.

The Rams are off Wednesday but will return to practice Thursday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Question. Does Rodriguez look better then Tavon? I know we all love him and he was a first round pick. But I want the best players. This dude sounds like a football player. Any chance he replaces Austin?

Funny how people see different things. I watch Kendricks drop several passes and Smelly make several nice catches.

I'll take our own ROD coverage.
This article had a few things that made me say "hmmm? Ok."

Na, not better than TA. I like his route running and hands, but he's not explosive like TA. I would take him over Givens right now but not to be a key part of the offense. Special Teams and backup WR. I'm betting he will be opposite TA on punts. I'm also betting we a lot of him in preseason.

I'm not sure I agree that that's "fine".

Well, he's a good player. He's catching well and doing what he does. I just don't see anything that is improved. Of course, his route running may be, I haven't really focused on him.

What Coach was pointing out is that if they run him deeper from the slot, behind the linebackers instead of in front of them, he could have a great season.

I'll watch him some next time.

Nice way to wind down after a long day. Thanks to all that updated.

Wonder if Kendricks has been lifting too many weights? He may need to work on his flexibility. It's still early so I'll give him sometime.

Rams report: Peacock visits as Rams hold first full workout in pads
• By Joe Lyons

http://www.stltoday.com/sports/foot...cle_0d3856c6-bd66-5423-b6a4-543e95fcd97f.html

The Rams held their first full-squad workout in pads on Tuesday, practicing in front of 1,030 at Rams Park.

“When you put the pads on, things get a little more real for everybody,'' third-year linebacker Alec Ogletree said. “It's exciting because it means your one step closer to the start of the season.''

Following an off day Wednesday, the team will practice Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Rams Park. Friday at 5 p.m., the team will hold a scrimmage at Lindenwood University.

Both the Thursday and Friday workouts are free and open to the public.

RAM-BLINGS

Dave Peacock, the co-leader of the St. Louis stadium task force, told the Post-Dispatch's Jim Thomas that he tries to get out to Rams' camp a time or two each year, but Tuesday's visit along with his two sons was different. A guest of the Rams, Peacock posed for pictures and drew plenty of attention from the media.

He also chatted briefly with both Rams COO Kevin Demoff and general manager Les Snead.

• Rookie receiver Daniel Rodriguez, the Afghanistan war hero from Clemson, put on a show for the fans and flashed his outstanding hands during a punt-catching drill. At one point, he made a behind-the-back catch while facing away from the punter. Later, it was a catch with two balls in his arms and another between his legs.

• The team made the first roster move of camp, releasing receiver Devon Wylie and bringing in defensive back Trovon Reed of Auburn. A highly regarded recruit from Louisiana, the 6-foot, 190-pound Reed spent his first three seasons at wide receiver _ he had 39 catches for 384 yards and a touchdown _ he shifted to cornerback last fall and ended up with 12 total tackles, four pass breakups and three interceptions.

Reed was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks shortly after the draft in May.

The Rams are a little short at corner these days with E.J. Gaines and Brandon McGee missing recent workouts due to injury.

• Defensive end Chris Long (back stiffness) practiced for the first time on Tuesday. Safety Mark Barron (knee) was again limited to individual work.
