I saw this article highlighting the strength of the Cowboys offensive line... the line being responsible for only 8 of the 23 sacks.

“Pro Football Focus released an interesting statistic this week, noting that the Cowboys’ offensive line allowed just eight sacks on the season, which was the best in the NFL.

Now, it should be noted that this does not mean Dak Prescott was only sacked eight times, because he was sacked 23. What it means is that 15 of those sacks were not surrendered by the offensive line itself and/or that the offensive line was not at fault for them.

It seems like a rather arbitrary statistic, but when you really take it into consideration, it’s actually pretty important. Because it demonstrates that Dallas’ offensive line remained strong point this past year.”

So, it made me wonder how the Rams were?

15 of 22. Not bad. Tie for 5th-9th.

But looking at the pressure categories (hurries, pressure) and sorting the table that way... We are 27th in overall line efficiency relative to pressure.

Obviously a spot to improve.

OL Pass Blocking Efficiency
The PFF "Pass Blocking Efficiency" rating measures pressure allowed on a per-snap basis with weighting toward sacks allowed.

It’s way worse than the stats show and that is not a bias fan overstatement.

We are probably the top team or at the top in those bootleg passes and Qb rollouts. Not to mention Goffs uncanny ability to feel and avoid the sack. Add to that the WR screens that McVay runs ad Nauseam.

Our entire offense was designed, and exceedingly more as the season went on, to protect the QB from a terrible Oline.

So yea, the sacks and even the pressures don’tbegin to tell the story in the Rams case.

Not sure how they would determine this without knowing the pass routes and progressions on each play.
It’s another PFF BS stat.
There are ways to protect an over matched OL. A QB reading very well and quickly and knowing where he is going with the ball based on the D pre snap is the biggest one....Warner did it for years in Arizona.
Just as some play callers call plays to protect their QB and taking reading away (see Shanny in SF) a QB can protect an OL.
Anyone who watched the Rams last year knows the OL was a hot mess for most of the year.

Yep. Look up the late season games particularly the game vs SF where we played them quite well. Rollouts and moving pockets constituted a large portion of the passing game and rightly so.

It's like I've been saying re: McVay... Him producing the offensive numbers we had in 2019 with THAT line is remarkable. Same goes with Goff in spite of his mistakes and lesser play, he kept us in a ton of games last season with no run game and poor protections and will be a better QB for the experience moving forward. And when the OL is fixed McVay will regain his "genius" label and the excuses will start again for how Goff is a system QB even though he'll be among the best signal callers in the league.

Oh and btw imagine last year's line with an unimaginative OC who isn't capable of putting Goff in motion to help keep him safe. Yeah. We would have been last in the league in pressures. Defenses would have hospitalized his ass.

Yes, hard to really know how our good Oline was at end of season last year as we started to use QB roll outs quite a bit.

It's something we did in 2017 and got away from in 2018 and 2019.
