Super Bowl 48 is going to have a much different feel to it than Super Bowls past. First and foremost, the game is being held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey — outdoors and in cold weather. In the Super Bowl’s 48-year history, a game has never been hold outdoors in a cold climate. But don’t worry — fans aren’t going to freeze while tailgating. That’s because tailgating won’t be allowed.
On Monday, Super Bowl CEO Al Kelly announced that there will be no grilling and lounging in parking lots for the hours leading up to the game.

“You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car,” Kelly said, per ESPNNewYork.com. “And provided you’re in the boundaries of a single parking space, you’ll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However, you’re not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you’re not going to be able to take out a grill, and you’re not going to be able to take up more than one parking space. And it’ll all be watched very carefully.”

In other words, feel free to stand next to your car in 20-degree weather and eat a Lunchables.

The NFL and Super Bowl organizers intend to take incredible security measures on Feb. 2, 2014. In addition to a tailgating ban, there will also be no unauthorized taxis or car services bringing fans to the game. The 80,000 ticket holders will have to arrive by way of charter bus called the Fan Express, which costs $51, by way of the NJ Transit or with the use of a parking pass, of which there are less than 13,000 available.

“Nobody’s going to be dropped off by black car,” Kelly said. “You can have a black car, a green car, a white car, a red car as long as you have parking, and the car needs to stay on the premises the entire time.”

That’s OK, fans can just park in lots away from the stadium and walk to the game, right? Wrong. Kelly said no one will be allowed to enter the stadium on foot unless they have arrived via public transportation or shuttle bus — where security will have screened them before and after — or they have an approved parking pass.

While a lot of these rules and guidelines sound insane, they’re in place for our safety. It may be untraditional, but it’s tough to argue with that.

SECAUCUS, N.J. -- Forget about setting up those kegs or buffet tables in the parking lot before this season's Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium. There will be no tailgating, according to the game's committee CEO, Al Kelly.

"You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in your car," Kelly said. "And provided you're in the boundaries of a single parking space, you'll be able to eat or drink right next to your car. However, you're not going to be able to take out a lounge chair, you're not going to be able to take out a grill, and you're not going to be able to take up more than one parking space. And it'll all be watched very carefully."

You will be allowed to have food in your car and have drink in you car. And provided you're in the boundaries of a single parking space, you'll be able to eat or drink right next to your car.

” -- Al Kelly, Super Bowl committee
The tailgating news came during the committee's Monday news conference regarding transportation and safety for the Feb. 2, 2014, game.

There will be only three ways for the expected 80,000 ticket holders to get to the game. The committee will charter buses called the Fan Express, which will cost $51 and pick up and drop off passengers at nine locations around the region. Fans can also take N.J. Transit to the MetLife Stadium stop or be dropped off by vehicles that must have parking passes.

There will be fewer than 13,000 parking spots available for fans.

And hiring a black car, taxi or limo won't be an option for VIPs who will spend thousands of dollars per ticket. No cars will be allowed near the stadium on game day without parking passes, and any car that drops off a passenger will have to wait at the stadium.

"Nobody's going to be dropped off by black car," Kelly said. "You can have a black car, a green car, a white car, a red car as long as you have parking, and the car needs to stay on the premises the entire time."

Fans who had considered parking farther from the stadium and getting there on foot will not be allowed to enter.

"You cannot walk to the Super Bowl," Kelly said. "You can get your hotel to drop you off at one of the New Jersey Transit locations or get the shuttle to take you to a Fan Express location, but you cannot walk."

Ultimately, Kelly said he expects that between 70 and 80 percent of all ticket holders will get to the game via public transportation or shuttle bus. There will be 1,600 parking spots for buses.

The reduced parking capacity is a result of the large security perimeter needed for the Super Bowl. Fans will have to go through security screenings at the train station and again at the stadium, Kelly said.

Kelly and fellow host committee members Woody Johnson (New York Jets owner) and Steve Tisch (New York Giants co-owner) have been calling Super Bowl XLVIII the public transportation Super Bowl ever since they started working on the logistics.

Kelly introduced officials from the MTA, NJ Transit and NJ Path to discuss the added schedules and plans for the week of the Super Bowl, when New York City and New Jersey could see an influx of 400,000 travelers.

NJ Transit will offer a Super Pass for $50 that will be good for all trains, light rail and bus service it provides.

The committee had tried to put together a transit card that would have allowed Super Bowl visitors to switch between all three forms of transit on a single ticket, but it fell apart. Kelly said the different technologies used by the organizations made it a complicated undertaking, though the desire was there.

James Simpson, the commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, said the department will suspend all construction before the week of the game and planned to staff Super Bowl media day and game day at the same level it does for a weather emergency.

Lanes will be dedicated exclusively to official Super Bowl vehicles on game day. The goal, Simpson said, is to keep traffic moving smoothly on all highways and bridges during a potentially high-traffic time period.

Of course, there is potential for snow and ice. A blizzard might make for great television viewing but would be a logistical nightmare for Super Bowl organizers. Simpson said New Jersey has the equipment and personnel to manage any kind of weather, however.

Not a surprise. The Super Bowl isn't exactly for hard core fans, it's more of a corporate sporting event. Gifts to large clients, gifts to big wigs.. I believe I read over 50% of tickets were bought buy large corporations..

All the rich and privileged people will be in the luxury suites, and all the fanatic suckers will be freezing their balls off schlepping through the sleet, snow and frigid arctic temperatures to sit in ice cold seats for 6 hours.

No thanks, I don't like being used as fodder for the big boys.

Sounds like its more to do with maximizing profit margins than safety.

Make everyone pay you to get to the game rather than make their own way there = check
Ensure people have little chance to consume their own food/beverages and must buy yours = check
Maximize parking spaces at expense of tailgating fun = check
Make it uncomfortable outside so people get into the stadium and can get to those endorsed and approved concession stalls = check.

This is the future. Resistance is futile. We are the Borg...assimilate...assimilate...

This is because of "Safety" huh. If that's the case, why do they allow tailgating in that same location before every Giant and Jet game?

This has nothing to do with Safety,,, and everything to do with the $50 per head fee that most will be forced to pay.

Do you think it could be because of the Boston marathon bombing? That and profit? If you don't have a ticket, you don't get to park is what they were saying on the radio.

I knew from the time it was announced that a Super Bowl is NJ was a mistake. Thank you NFL for proving that to be correct.

This just in, you will line up single file and they will be teaching you how to march military style, you must march in formation at all times on the way to your seats with your section or you may forfeit your ticket.

Don't slack it when the half time show comes on if we see you not having fun you may be escorted out, also do not have too much fun or you will be escorted out.

Geeez in all seriousness this shit is absurd, I got a better idea. Lets just not have it there. Problem solved.

Since it's (obviously) not going to affect our Rams I'd love to see about 2 feet of snow the night before the game. It makes less than no sense to have the league's biggest game of the year in a location in which weather is likely to impact the outcome. Nice job NFL!

I like the fact they are having it in a place where weather can effect the game.. Elements are part of the game, pop warner, high school, college you need to learn to play in adverse conditions. I wouldn't want to see a white out, but a light snow, or some adverse conditions would excite me a lot more about the Broncos vs Seahawks..

I understand your point about adverse conditions but there is so much less at stake in all of the other leagues. I'd be sick if weather conditions resulted in the Rams losing such a game. If it cost the shehawks a victory however, bring it on!
