NFL salary cap will rise above $150 million in 2016
Posted by Michael David Smith on December 5, 2015

The NFL’s salary cap will grow by close to $10 million next year.

Owners were told at this week’s league meeting that the salary cap will be between $150 million and $153.4 million next year, ESPN reports. This year’s cap is $143.3 million.

Based on a projected cap of $150 million, there are three teams that are already over based solely on the players they already have under contract for 2016: The Dolphins are $4.96 million over, the Saints are $4.14 million over and the Bills are over by just $18,000, according to Spotrac.com. Those teams will all have offseason moves to make before the league year begins in March.

The Raiders are projected to have more than $72 million in cap space on a $150 million cap, by far the most of any team. The Bears are next at $60 million, followed by the Buccaneers at $52 million, the Jaguars at $45 million and the 49ers at $40 million.

According to Sportrac, the Rams are 6th with $39.2 million and 39 players under contract, before deciding what to do player contracts (Long, Scaffold, Cook, Foles, etc). They could easily have $50 million in cap space.

Yes. I think we're in pretty good shape.

Kudos, KD!

Let's go out and sign Jenks, Tru and Barron then. Hurry the hell up before they decide they don't wanna be here anymore.

And Shahid Khan and the Jaguars still won't spend money! They're always one of the lowest paryolls in the NFL.

What are you talking about? They spent a ton last year. Julius Thomas, Jared Odrick, Jeremy Parnell, Davon House and Dan Skuta. That was like 97M guaranteed.

And once again the Jags are one of the teams spending the least amount of the cap. It's constant with them and as the article points out they're about to be fined for violating the cba by spending so little.

This article was posted on February prior to last years FA. How is this relevant to what you're saying now? Your completely ignoring what they actually spent in free agency after that article came out. Find an article post last year free agency showing teams that spent the most. They were told they need to spend, then tossed out 97M in guarantees. If they have to do so again, then they will.

The jags spent the second most last year amongst all teams in free agency.

And they have more unused salary cap than every team in the NFL. They have a large carry over from last year for unspent cap and they will have the same again next year. It's nice that they finally signed a couple free agent but my point still stands, they again didn't spend their salary cap and as a result are about to be fined by the nflpa for violating the cba and not spending the bare minimum to field a team. This has happened every year that Khan has owned the team.

the extra 10 large makes that more than possible now. not sure if jenkins wants to stay though, regardless. not sure what the franchise on him would be either.

I'm cool with rolling out Tru, Gaines, Joyner and Roberson if Jenks gets greedy or wants to leave.

All this extra money to spend and there are no good quarterbacks out there. I'd spend extra money if there was a decent QB out there. If Foles wasn't so bad this season he woulda been the best option. I don't know what happened to him and why he can't make plays. Its a head scratcher.

NFL’s projected cap numbers not too low, for a change

When reports emerged that NFL owners were informed that the salary cap could exceed $153 million in 2016, the reasonable conclusion was this: It’s way too low.

The league had a habit in recent years of under-projecting the spike in the salary cap, a practice with which the NFL Players Association previously disagreed.

And for good reason. With the official numbers not coming until late February, teams had a habit of using the lowballed estimates when negotiating new deals with pending free agents.

Per a source with knowledge of the NFLPA’s thinking, the early projections provided to the teams by the NFL this year “seem right.”

Again, the final numbers won’t be known until February. For now, though, it appears that the estimate can be trusted by agents who will be trying to get players signed to new contracts before they hit free agency — and while they still carry the injury risk for a few more weeks.

If we start early, maybe we can replace the entire offense (minus this years rookies) with this cash.

Maybe K-Mart has playbooks on sale.

Player spending could surpass $200 million per team for the first time
Posted by Mike Florio on December 8, 2015

With the salary cap poised to crack $150 million in 2016 (one source told PFT it could meet or exceed $155 million), the NFL may cross a new per-team spending threshold for the first time.

Factoring in player benefit costs, which are not part of the salary cap but are part of the money paid by the teams, the NFL could for the first time spend more than $200 million per team on players in 2016.

That’s $6.4 billion in total player expenses for 2016. And that’s a lot of money.

Of course, that still leaves a lot of money for the owners, even with plenty of other expenses. The best news for players is that, based on those numbers, they are indeed feasting on a large serving of cash cow.

Offense for Dummies by Brian Schottenheimer (with a foreword by Frank Cignetti)

Chapter 1: Make sure your playcalling is predicated on showing how clever you can be (e.g., call a pass to the middle of the field in short goal-to-go situations when you have multiple timeouts remaining - nobody will expect it).

Chapter 2: If a playcall works really well, never go back to it. Ever.

Chapter 3: If you have a pint-sized slot receiver, be sure to give him many carried right into the middle of the line (ties in with chapter 1).

Most important thing is we are smart with our money. Retain the key guys we have and get real difference makers in FA.
And I would even go as far to say if we don't draft a QB I'd be willing to give some picks up to get a Cutler or similar.
We cannot go into next year with the same QB's on our roster as starters.
