NFL broadcasts lose Viagra, Cialis as major advertisers

TV ad sales for NFL games have been flaccid this offseason, and erectile dysfunction drugs are part of the reason.

Advertising Age reports that the makers of both Viagra and Cialis have declined to buy any advertisements on NFL games for the coming season. That’s a massive change for two products that were once among the top advertisers on NFL games.

The reason is apparently less about the NFL’s ratings decline last season than about pharmaceutical patents: Both Viagra and Cialis will soon be available as generic drugs, and therefore their makers no longer feel the need to advertise the name brands.

That’s bad news for the NFL’s network partners: Last season, the makers of Viagra and Cialis spent more than $50 million airing commercials during NFL games.

I work in the advertising industry, and as the post says, this has nothing to do with the NFL and everything to do with the fact that both drugs' ad budgets are getting totally slashed to nothing as they come off-patent.

Side note: did y'all know that the only two countries in the world that allow pharmaceutical companies to advertise drugs directly to consumers are the US and New Zealand?

That just leaves more advertising slots open for that Doritos' puppyMonkeyBaby ad....which is more disturbing than entertaining.

Bah. Commercials suck. I'm so used to watching streaming videos and whatnot without commercials that when I'm on a plane watching a movie, I get irrationally angry at things like the announcements interrupting my viewing.

How great it would be to watch a Football game with No commercials! or at least limit them to Quarter-endings and Half-Time!(y)(y)

Exactly and Bout time...maybe the price will drop with a lil competition...

Every time I read about big pharma...I think of them allowing that billionaire the opportunity to purchase that AIDS cocktail/drug...and raising the price to around....thousands of dollars Allowing many who can't afford it, to die.

There has to be some feminine hygiene products that can replace them, right? The NFL is trying to cater to women more, right?

:p ;)

"How'd you get tickets to the Tampax Bowl?"
"Oh, I pulled a few strings."

In a league full of dicks, it's a matter of finding a big pussy to endorse them.
