Rams vs. Giants Preview: Shane's Select Seven

Shane Gray

On Sunday, the St. Louis Rams (6-8) will host the New York Giants (5-9) in a week 16 NFC battle. While the Rams have won two of their last three games and four of their last seven overall, the Giants enter the action having won back to back contests.

Beckham's Ballin'

When looking at the season's statistical output of No. 12 overall pick Odell Beckham, Jr., one would never guess that the rookie wide receiver did not play until week five due to a hamstring injury.

In just ten games, Beckham has averaged 13.7 yards per catch on 71 receptions with nine of those grabs going for touchdowns.

Over the last seven games, the 5'11" Beckham has made history -- racking up 61 catches for 866 yards and six scores.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Beckham's 61 catches in that seven game stretch constitute the most in history by a rookie, while his 866 receiving yards in that same timeframe is good for second all-time by a first year player.

In his last three games, Beckham has been even better -- scoring four touchdowns while averaging 11.5 catches and 136.5 receiving yards per game.

So much for the so-called rookie wall, right?

"Odell (Beckham), he’s been impressive," Giants quarterback Eli Manning told St. Louis reporters Wednesday. "He’s a playmaker. He’s exciting when he gets the ball in his hands. He’s been a good addition for us. He’s got the big play potential. He catches the ball very naturally. He’s got great speed and burst. He’s got a good work ethic. Hopefully he can stay healthy and just keep working and keep getting better. I think he has that mentality.”

Had Beckham not gone No. 12 to the Giants, it is conceivable that the Rams might have grabbed him at No. 13 after doing their due diligence on the SEC standout in pre-draft evaluations. Instead, St. Louis selected defensive tackle Aaron Donald and hit as big on the defensive side of the ball as the Giants did on the offensive side of it.

“We spent a lot of time with him and really liked him," St. Louis Head Coach Jeff Fisher said this week. " We knew he was going to be a real good pro. He's really an outstanding athlete. As good as receiver out of frame as you’ll see, especially at a young age. He’s having a great year. ”

New York Giants Head Coach Tom Coughlin is unsurprisingly happy with his rookie wideout's prolific production, as he told reporters on Wednesday.

“He’s a good player," Coughlin asserted. "He’s smart. He retains information well. He’s caught the ball very well. He’s been moved around in a lot of places and he's handled that very well. He does love to play and compete. He’s a very good player and a good contributor. We’re looking forward to his continued improvement.”

For the Rams sake, it is a safe bet that the team's fans are hoping that his continued improvement is delayed at least one week.

I like him but Lets see how he does against a defense like the Rams have. He hasn't exactly been playing against the NFC west.

Great post. As one can see, a blend of some good D's and some bad. Either way, he's doing work in an impressive manner.
