Notes:

Found it *interesting* that a story of this magnitude can come out and nobody in the media had any idea it was coming. Not Nationally, not locally, nothing. The league did a pretty bang-up job of keeping this under wraps for so long.

Thinks Tom Benson will stick by Loomis and Payton, but it's obviously embarrassing, and now the "feel good" post-Katrina story is gone. Now they're going to be known for this instead (paraphrasing).

It didn't surprise him that this was going on, as GW is a disciple of Buddy Ryan, the originator of the bounty system. Part of his MO is to create this kind of "tough guy us against the world" mentality. Thinks he can afford to lose that part of his approach (bounties) and still be effective as a DC.

Why, after 3 years, did Williams exit New Orleans?
1. Probably because of this thing here, number one.
2. Thinks he had an arms-length relationship with Payton for a number of reasons. They never married philosophically. Professionally they got along fine, but thinks there were some personality clashes. Payton's lack of institutional control w/Williams in this situation was exacerbated by their less than great relationship.

What is the feeling in New Orleans (about the severity)?
Thinks it'll be unprecedented, and the league is going to make an example of the Saints. Suspensions, fines for everyone involved, and loss of draft picks - this year and possibly their 1st next year. How long the suspensions are is going to be interesting to see. It could be determined by how much people cooperate with the investigations. If everyone cooperates fully, he thinks the Commissioner will be a little more lenient than if nobody aids in the investigation.
